Mexicans and World War II 45 Mexicans and World War II: Change and Continuity Matthew Lesh Third Year Undergraduate, University of Melbourne ‘They served us beer but not food [at the drive-in movie theatre]. They told us, ‘No, we don’t serve Mexicans’, World War II veteran Natividad Campos recalled, ‘I felt pretty bad because I felt I was just as American as anybody else’.1 Campos’ experience reflected that of thousands of Mexican Americans trying to belong in a world in which they were considered non-white and consequently plagued by discrimination.2 This challenge of belonging encapsulated the Mexican American wartime experience. On the home front Mexicans stood out as patriotic supporters of the war effort. They took up various jobs in war industry, migrated to America to work in agriculture, and raised money to buy war bonds. In the military, Mexican Americans excelled in various capacities, served in combat roles out of proportion to their numbers, and received more decorations for bravery than any other ethnic group.3 During the war, Mexican Americans experienced changes in treatment and an increase in opportunity. Nevertheless, discrimination continued in education, the workplace, restaurants, in public facilities, and in housing. World War II was a turning point in which Mexican Americans were invigorated to fight against this injustice following the clash of an increased sense of self-worth, created by the contribution to the war effort, and the ongoing experience of racism.4 This article investigates this turning point by exploring the experiences of Mexican Americans before, during, and after World War II. -

Sal Castro & the Chicano Struggle for Educational Justice arrives at a critical juncture for those interested in the U.S. education and political systems. While the text deals with events concentrated in the late 20th century, Blowout! provides historical context to issues pertinent to the contemporary relationship between politics and education in North America. Inequities regarding teaching salaries and resources combined with student drop out rates and disciplinary actions are, today as then, frequently aligned with issues of race and ethnicity. In recent years the media has intensified its focus on the topic of education, especially in relation to Latino and black students. Photo Taken by Jasmin Temblador 2 Introduction In this reflection paper, I use the method of oral history to explore leadership through the Chicano Youth leadership conference (CYLC) over fifty-years. For this final capstone project, I have interviewed Charlotte Lerchenmuller, president of the Sal Castro Foundation, and Paula Crisostomo, board member of the Sal Castro foundation, and former conference attendee and student activist. I selected Paula and Charlotte because they are elders who hold leadership roles in the conference, and both have been longtime volunteers. The purpose of this project is to ensure that the narratives of elders within the conference are heard, seen, and recognized as a vital contribution to the sustainability of the conference, and to continue to empower future generations of Chicano/a youth. Through the oral history recordings, future generations of Chicano/a and Latino/a people will have access to learn about the experiences of people like Charlotte and Paula who have made incredible contributions to the CYLC over time. In this paper, I will introduce a brief history of the conference and the 1968 student walkouts, my personal narrative as a volunteer with the conference and how it inspired me to conduct this capstone. Finally, I will introduce the method of oral history, my process for completing the interviews for this project, and an analysis and interpretation of the interviews. -

In the 1960s and 1970s, minors from Indochina were resettled in the United States. In the 1970s, the U.S accepted 14,000 unaccompanied minors from Cuba through Operation Peter Pan. Many of these Cuban minors, aged five to eighteen, were sent to the United States by parents fearing their children would be indoctrinated in communist schools. In the case of these minors, they arrived in the United States with the consent of their still-living family members. In contrast, about 3,500 Sudanese Lost Boys were resettled in the United States in 2000, and more recently in 2010, 53 “lost children” from Haiti were brought to the United States following a devastating earthquake. This study investigated the integration and assimilation patterns of the Sudanese Lost Boys in the Kansas City area with the purpose of understanding the sociological impact on these Boys from their own perspective. As opposed to previous studies done on these Boys in Kansas and other areas in the United States, the present study used interview-based research and analyzed data using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. -

De la “no intervención” a la institucionalización: la evolución de las relaciones Estado-diáspora en el caso mexicano* Alexandra Délano HASTA FINALES de los años ochenta, en términos generales, la posición del gobierno mexicano sobre la administración de los flujos migratorios consistía en garantizar la protección de los derechos de la población mexicana en Estados Unidos y asegurar que se mantuviera la “válvula de escape” a las presiones económicas y políticas del país. Parte de las con- diciones necesarias para lograr estos objetivos dependían de la estabilidad de la relación con Estados Unidos y de las percepciones del tema migra- torio como un problema en la agenda bilateral. Con el fin de mantener el statu quo “desventajoso pero familiar” (Ronfeldt y Sereseres, 1983: 89) y evitar tensiones en la relación bilateral, el gobierno mexicano desarrolló sus acciones de protección consular y sus relaciones con la comunidad mexicana en el exterior bajo los límites de la “no intervención” –lo cual se interpretaba como ejercer la responsabilidad de protección consular sin cuestionar los procesos legales estadounidenses ni fomentar la movi- lización política de la comunidad migrante, no organizar actividades de cabildeo y no participar en discusiones sobre las leyes migratorias de Estados Unidos (Cardoso, 1979; Zazueta, 1983; Rico, 1999). A su vez, evitó vincular la migración a otros temas para no “contaminar” la agenda bilateral. En el ámbito nacional, la discusión pública sobre estos temas era limitada y el gobierno respondía a las críticas de grupos nacio- nalistas y de oposición con una retórica basada en la idea de disuadir la emigración, promover el retorno de los migrantes y mantener sus lazos con la “patria perdida”. -
