My name is Robert Bria. I am the Mayor of the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters and it is my very great pleasure to welcome you all here this morning to celebrate our national holiday. I would firstly like to acknowledge this land that we meet on today is the traditional land of the Kaurna people and that we respect their spiritual connection with their country. We also acknowledge the Kaurna People as the custodians of the greater Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still important to the living Kaurna people today. 2 I am delighted to welcome our distinguished guests: Hon Steven Marshall MP, Premier of South Australia. Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas. Cette étude fait l’analyse d’ouvrages de littérature cyberpunk écrits entre 1981 et 2005, et situe la littérature féminine cyberpunk dans le contexte d’une discussion culturelle plus vaste des questions féministes. The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and Java provide a standardized, portable and platform- independent way to render dynamic, interactive 3D scenes across the Internet. Integrating two powerful and portable software languages provides interactive 3D graphics plus complete programming capabilities plus network access. Intended for programmers and scene authors, this paper provides a VRML overview, synopsizes the open development history of the specification, provides a condensed summary of VRML 3D graphics nodes and scene graph topology, describes how Java interacts with VRML through detailed examples, and examines a variety of VRML/Java future developments. Overview. The Web is being extended to three spatial dimensions thanks to VRML, a dynamic 3D scene description language that can include embedded behaviors and camera animation. A rich set of graphics primitives provides a common-denominator file format which can be used to describe a wide variety of 3D scenes and objects. The VRML specification is now an International Standards Organization (ISO) specification (VRML 97). Why VRML and Java together? Over twenty million VRML browsers have shipped with Web browsers, making interactive 3D graphics suddenly available for any desktop. Java adds complete programming capabilities plus network access, making VRML fully functional and portable. This is a powerful new combination, especially as ongoing research shows that VRML plus Java provide extensive support for building large-scale virtual environments (LSVEs). -

Australian High Commission, Kuala Lumpur MEDIA RELEASE 15 DECEMBER 2017 Deepening Australia’s engagement with the Muslim world – visit to Malaysia by Australia’s Special Envoy to the OIC, Mr Ahmed Fahour AO Australia’s Special Envoy to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mr Ahmed Fahour AO, visited Malaysia for a one-day official visit yesterday. Mr Fahour called on Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dato’ Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, to discuss Australia’s engagement with the OIC, Islamic banking and finance, as well as key challenges facing the Muslim world. They also shared experiences on countering violent extremism. Mr Fahour was treated to a tour and prayers at Masjid Negara with the Grand Imam, Tan Sri Syaikh Ismail Muhammad. He also had lunch with local experts and commentators, to exchange views on trends in Islam in Australia and Malaysia. A highlight for Mr Fahour was a visit to the “Faith, Fashion, Fusion: Muslim Women’s Style in Australia” exhibition at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, which is being displayed for the first time internationally with the support of the Australian Government and Lendlease Malaysia. Developed by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney, “Faith, Fashion Fusion” explores the experiences and achievements of Australian Muslim women and how they express their faith through fashion. It also displays Australia’s growing modest fashion market and the work of a new generation of Muslim designers and entrepreneurs. Mr Fahour, who is also the Patron of the Islamic Museum of Australia said, “The exhibition showcases the diversity of Australia’s Muslim communities and the significant contribution they make to Australia’s contemporary, multicultural society.” Mr Fahour welcomed these efforts that help to build understanding and respect between the Islamic community and other faiths and cultures. -

The briefing materials are attached and are largely based on the information disclosed during the full year results announcement. “NAB’s Australian Region continues to deliver excellent results in a challenging market, demonstrating increased revenue growth and a tight focus on cost control,” Mr Fahour said. “This is an outstanding achievement when viewed in the context of the external environment over the course of the year. “Throughout this difficult time NAB has continued to invest in our business by developing new brands such as UBank, extending our microfinance initiatives, delivering new products such as the Clear home loan, and commencing new infrastructure initiatives such as our Next Generation platform. “NAB has remained strong through these challenging conditions, and continues to focus on providing excellent support and service to our customers,” Mr Fahour said. Australian Region Financial Performance The Australia Region delivered cash earnings growth (before IoRE) of 15.8% and underlying profit growth of 19.3% over the prior comparative period. Revenue growth of 10.1% was an excellent result achieved in a very challenging environment. The strong performance of cash earnings growth of 18.5% by the Australia Banking business reflects continued momentum in business lending and consumer deposit gathering. -

I have been privileged to have two marvellous and supportive PhD supervisors. I am immensely grateful to my Social Sciences supervisor, Dr. Alan Morris, who guided me with his constant encouragement, valuable advice and enormous generosity. As a fresh new PhD student, full of excitement on my first days after I arrived in Australia, I remember encountering a recently graduated PhD student who, after I told her that my supervisor was Alan Morris, assured me I was in good hands. At that time, I had no idea of the magnitude of what she meant. Alan has truly gone above and beyond the role of a supervisor to guide me so brilliantly through this doctorate. He gracefully accepted the challenge of leading me in an entirely new discipline, as well as through the very challenging process of writing in a second language. Despite his vast commitments and enormous workload, Alan read my various manuscripts many times. I am also deeply thankful to my Economics supervisor, Dr. Peter Kriesler, for whom without his warm welcome, I would have not come to this country. POSTMODERN ORIENTALISM William Gibson, Cyberpunk and Japan A thesis presented in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand Leonard Patrick Sanders 2008 ABSTRACT Taking the works of William Gibson as its point of focus, this thesis considers cyberpunk’s expansion from an emphatically literary moment in the mid 1980s into a broader multimedia cultural phenomenon. It examines the representation of racial differences, and the formulation of global economic spaces and flows which structure the reception and production of cultural practices. These developments are construed in relation to ongoing debates around Japan’s identity and otherness in terms of both deviations from and congruities with the West (notably America). To account for these developments, this thesis adopts a theoretical framework informed by both postmodernism as the “cultural dominant” of late capitalism (Jameson), and orientalism, those discursive structures which produce the reified polarities of East versus West (Said). Cyberpunk thus exhibits the characteristics of an orientalised postmodernism, as it imagines a world in which multinational corporations characterised as Japanese zaibatsu control global economies, and the excess of accumulated garbage is figured in the trope of gomi. It is also postmodernised orientalism, in its nostalgic reconstruction of scenes from the residue of imperialism, its deployment of figures of “cross-ethnic representation” (Chow) like the Eurasian, and its expressions of a purely fantasmatic experience of the Orient, as in the evocation of cyberspace.
