No question or topic was too large or small for conversations that often carried on into the wee hours of the morning. Caley Horan, Eric Richtmyer, Tim Smit, and Aaron Windel will undoubtedly be lifelong friends, mahjong and euchre partners, fantasy football opponents, kindred spirits at the CC Club and Mortimer’s, and so on. I am especially grateful for the hospitality that Eric and Tim (and Tank the cat) offered during the fall of 2008, as I moved back and forth between Syracuse and Minneapolis. Aaron and I had the fortune of living in New York City at the same time in our graduate careers, and I have fond memories of our walks around Stuyvesant Park in the East Village and Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and our time spent with the folks of Tuesday night. Although we did not solve all of the world’s problems, we certainly tried. Living in Brooklyn, I also had the opportunity to participate in the short-lived yet productive “Brooklyn Scholars of Domestic Service” (AKA the BSDS crew) reading group with Vanessa May and Lara Vapnek. -

They allowed me to keep most things on the record, and provided me with an understanding that simply would not have been possible without their participation. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews. January 13, 2015 Audra McDonald and Alan Cumming in a Reading of ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ By Patrick Healy Could a Broadway revival of the acclaimed musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman” be on the horizon? A multiday reading of the show, the 1993 Tony Award winner for best musical, was held last week with three big theater names playing the major roles: Audra McDonald as the title character, Alan Cumming as the gay prisoner Molina, and Steven Pasquale as the Marxist revolutionary Valentin. The Tony-winning director John Tiffany (“Once”) oversaw the reading, which was organized by the producer Tom Kirdahy (“It’s Only a Play”). Mr. Kirdahy is married to the show’s book writer, Terrence McNally, and is working with the “Spider Woman” composer, John Kander, on this spring’s Broadway revival of “The Visit.” (“Spider Woman” has lyrics by Fred Ebb.) Mr. Kirdahy, in a telephone interview on Tuesday, said that he was “thrilled” with the reading and that the actors and Mr. Tiffany were pleased as well. “I think everyone is interested in having further conversations, but there is no game plan for a production at this point,” Mr. Kirdahy said. Based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig, “Spider Woman” centers on the relationship between two prisoners in a Latin American country and the fixation of one of them on movies and a diva known for many roles, including a deadly spider woman. The show ran on Broadway for two years and won Tonys for its three main actors as well as best book and best score, among others. -

The cultural archive of this dissertation is organized around two important legal watersheds in juvenile justice. In 1899, the first juvenile court was established in Cook County, Illinois, and ushered a wave of juvenile justice reform in courts across the nation. The culmination of early Progressive era child savers’ efforts, the installation of juvenile courts marked a significant shift in the court’s formal role from neutral adjudicator to a paternal administrator. The Supreme Court decision, In re Gault (1967) marks the second watershed. Within normative legal accounts, this decision is seen as “restoring” the court’s impartial treatment of the juvenile based on the determination that juvenile court procedure failed to protect the juvenile’s right to due process. Across these legal watersheds, this dissertation offers a genealogy of juvenile delinquency discourse that interrogates the complex network of disciplinary knowledge (including law, psychology and sociology), which simultaneously clarified and obfuscated the causal features of youth’s supposed predisposition towards criminal behavior. -
