4 Another summer of sporting highs and lows is upon us. The Welsh RFU are celebrating a successful tour of South Africa and Argentina. At the time of writing the English FA are still optimistic about events in Russia. National cricket teams have rediscovered how to win and Wimbledon is just around the corner. Ahead there will undoubtedly be times of celebration and relief, as well as disappointment and confusion. As most of you will now be aware Rev Melia Cope will be retiring this autumn (see page 7). Before she and Peter leave us we will be certain to celebrate their time amongst us and we will share in their relief at finally being able to share fully in Peter’s retirement. We will all be disappointed to see them leave and when we look at the service rotas from October onwards we shall probably experience some collective confusion. A classic example indeed of the truism parting is . On Ascension Day each year we revisit the mixed emotions of the disciples and followers of Jesus as they witnessed his departure. There was disappointment and confusion but there was also hope. Jesus had promised them that they would receive his Holy Spirit, the comforter, and that promise was fulfilled ten days later at Pentecost. God’s Holy Spirit is the life blood of God’s people. As we look to future uncertainties we can rely on the Holy Spirit to comfort and encourage us, to give us vision and purpose and to fill us with hope and joy as we continue God’s work. Mark’s Letter Below is a demonstration of such comfort and encouragement in the form of an extract from an email from our Archbishop, words which were entirely unsolicited andSea most Sunday timely. Enjoy. Mark.

6 Evenjobb Event

On Sunday August 5, Evenjobb is going out on a limb(!) hosting a group of Open Gardens in this village in the beautiful Radnor Valley. We are fortunate in having a wonderful mix of gardens: one designed especially for the birds, one with lakeside and woodland walks, one with a small orchard, one with a walled garden, another with a more formal setting. Plant people will enjoy looking at greenhouses, flowers and vegetables, and seeing an old garden being modified. We have plants for sale, and food with teas in two locations. Plus, for the curious, there are alpacas, angora goats, chickens and an Indian runner duck! Croquet and French Boules are also available. Evenjobb Open Gardens The gardens will be open from 2:00 to 6:00 for £5 per person, children free. Pick up a map with all the Open Gardens details at the village hall. We’ll be here, come rain or come shine!

A choir from Wheaton College, a Liberal Arts College in Illinois (heartlands of America), came for a course on Global Music with Geoff Weaver. They performed at our service on May 27th, the Bank Holiday weekend, during the Lingen Stitchers Exhibition. They sang the luxurious John Rutter hymn, Tea at the Exhibition and accompanied us in all our hymns. A couple of them were interviewed and told us something about their lives. They appreciated their time in Knighton enormously -- as we appreciated them. They brought with them their infectious enthusiasm which left us all encouraged that the Church is alive and well. We were reminded that there are so many young people in the Church -- not only in the States -- but in this country.

There were games organised by the children who encouraged visitors to take part, some of whom were themselves pupils at the school many years ago. To celebrate the occasion, FROGS (Friends of Gladestry School) provided tea and cakes for friends and villagers. The turn out was fantastic and much appreciated by pupils, staff and organisers. It’s good to know that in a day when so much of our heritage has been lost, a small but vibrant school in Gladestry has reclaimed a part of its history for future generations to enjoy.

Art Down the Track

Art Down the Track was a fine success with many local artists displaying their work. On a beautiful Saturday Diane, from East Radnor Ramblers, led an enthusiastic group of thirty people from Knighton to Knucklas. They arrived at Upper House in Knighton, where the garden was soon heaving and hot. Everyone enjoyed the artworks, the sounds of Whitton Voices and the accompanying tea and cake. Many stayed for some good folk music outside at the Castle Inn. They returned to Knighton by train where several artists were also displaying work over the weekend at the Old School. You can see Andy Hazel’s bus anytime. On Monday there was another successful day at Cwm Jenkin up on the hill with more cakes, walks, tractors and lots of art.
