Ph.D Jack DeVore, Ph.D Committee Member Committee Member Abstract The purpose of this study was to identify ideas about how occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals influence decision-makers on matters impacting occupational health and safety management systems. A modified nominal group technique was used that involved 67 participants in ten nominal groups and identified the most important ideas about how OSH professionals can influence workplace safety and health decision making. Our eyes searching deep into each other’s souls, in suspension between the well and wishes we sought. On bated breath, I waited to witness her sage reply, then with a warm smile, a deep releasing sigh, and a glitter twinkle of passion flashed in her mind’s eye. She spoke reflective words like a Siren of Socrates, her voice softly sang, pervasively resonating in my mind to this very day. “For I know nothing my dear son, but from stagecoach to space shuttle I have seen. All of that is nothing compared to the life time you will know and see. The future is yours to seize, live your life happy and follow your dreams. Go now, become the man I know you are destined to be”. One peaceful night, in a perfect celestial moment during one of her vivid dreams, the universe called my beloved MoMo home at age 101. She was the most incredible lifelong learner I have ever known. Rather than constructing a political narrative of the period, I focus on the role of reshaping urban centers and regional landscapes in the creation of empire in Greece and western Asia Minor. This period was marked by the rapid creation of new cities, major settlement and demographic shifts, and the reorganization, consolidation, or destruction of existing settlements and the urbanization of previously under- exploited regions. I analyze the complexities of this phenomenon across four frameworks: shifting settlement patterns, the regional and royal economy, civic religion, and the articulation of a new order in architectural and urban space. The introduction poses the central problem of the interrelationship between urbanization and imperial control and sets out the methodology of my dissertation. After briefly reviewing and critiquing previous approaches to this topic, which have focused mainly on creating catalogues, I point to the gains that can be made by shifting the focus to social and economic structures and asking more specific interpretive questions.

    The Elegiac Grotesque by Mariapia Pietropaolo A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Classics University of Toronto © Copyright by Mariapia Pietropaolo 2013 The Elegiac Grotesque Mariapia Pietropaolo Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Classics University of Toronto 2013 Abstract In Roman elegy the poet-lover has recourse to images of ugliness and disfigurement when he discovers that he is unable to retain the favour of his beloved with his love and verses. He degrades his opponents and suggests that his beloved herself succumbs to the fascination of horrid lovers. In this thesis I explore the theme of elegiac degradation from the perspective of grotesque hermeneutics, with the aim of showing that the grotesque plays a significant role in the development and self-understanding of elegy, the genre in which it is least expected. After discussing relevant aspects of grotesque theory, I show that the historical premises for a grotesque reading of Roman love poetry are found in Lucretius’ diatribe against love, a powerful philosophical gesture against the sentimentalizations of love and a strong argument for a poetics of love grounded in grotesque materialism. I then turn to Catullus, focusing on his bold use of grotesque imagery. Catullus admits the grotesque ii into the domain of love poetry and shows that, beneath the surface of elegance and urbanity that typifies romantic love, there lurks a reality that is both defiled and defiling. Turning to elegy proper, I analyze Propertius’ use of the grotesque focusing on his creation of a grotesque ethos within the aesthetic space of elegy.

    Chapter Eleven 11-Vs. 1: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Two elements which comprise faith (pistis): 1) Assurance (hupostasis): for another sense, cf. 1.1: “He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature.” This noun suggests something under (hupo) and therefore stable by reason of its reliability. Here it is used in conjunction with things hoped for (elpizomenon; from elpizo). By its nature hope is not based in the present, only the future, yet the association of this word with hupostasis means the object of hope...it’s nature (the alternate translation of hupostasis)...is already present. Actually the indefinite pragma (things) are hoped for; elpizomenon is an adjective which describes them. 2) Conviction (elegchos): alternately as proof, refutation and used by Socrates to evoke the truth through the dialogical process. “But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all” [1 Cor 14.24]. Elegchos seems to differ from hupostasis in that it is something which demands an account and is more liable to be examined; by reason of its nature, hupostasis is more a more hidden, abiding reality upon which elegchos rests. In the verse at hand, elegchos pertains to things not seen (ou blepomenon; from blepo, the common word pertaining to sight). 11-Vs. 2: For by it the men of old received divine approval. “It” referring to faith as hupostasis and as elegchos. The Greek text literally reads “in (en) this,” signifying full presence within.

    Ancient Greek Athletics and Violence Dr. Yiannaki Soteria, Laboratory Faculty, Department of Physical Education & Sport Science Athens, GREECE [email protected] In an era where man’s moral standards are tested by material social trends, the phenomenon of violence proliferates to an irrepressible degree imposing catastrophic results in many areas of society. Violence is not excluded even from competitive athletics, the very expression of a healthy life. However the aim of this study is not to go along with or adopt these examples but underline the significance of these forms of violence in Ancient Greek athletic games. The research will be restricted to a selection of particularly provocative examples of violence in sport but all these forms of athletics which are generated from instinct taken in context seem legitimate. A certain creativity can be discerned on assessment of the facts based on the mark they have left on history. Reference will not be made to biological reasons or sociological problems that have a direct relationship to violence; neither shall inclusion or explanation be made about violence as part of the instinctive “laws of conflict”1. The word violence is found in Ancient Greek writing and its meanings are varied. Homer uses violence to mean courage, strength, power, the might of domination2, the taking of human life3 and psychological violence4. He refers to physical bodily violence, physical assault, violent behavior, extortion coercion and force5. Hesiod distinguishes two types of violence, which are conflicting: Hateful6, which is represented by war, and Peaceful7, which is expressed by creativity in society. As time passed violence was personified8 or was expressed as potential violence9; whereas in Attic law we come across it interpreted as usurpation10.
