MITCHELL JEFFRY

JEFFRY MITCHELL SOME ASPECTS OF LANDSCAPE

PDX CONTEMPORARY ART SCREEN-PRINT ON PAPER 44” X 30”

Jeffry Mitchell earned a B.A. in Painting from the University of Dallas, and an M.F.A in Printmaking from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. Mitchell’s work seeks to tap into and broadcast a sense of vitality, whether it be joyful or colored with a more complex mix of emotions. Some Aspects of Landscape is a terrific example of Mitchell’s unmistakable love of color and decorative motifs. Jose Sierra is a self-taught who was introduced to ceramics at the University of the Andes in Mérida, Venezuela. Born in Venezuela, the images and memories of coffee mills, intensely colored mountains, dramatic landscapes, and pre-Columbian art and architecture of the Andean region of Venezuela all form an important part of Sierra’s visual inspirations. By altering wheel-thrown porcelain and stoneware, Sierra’s work fuses organic and geometric forms that express both fluidity and abruptness.

Dorothy Goode studied painting, printmaking, drawing, and illustration during her time completing the B.F.A program at Northern Arizona University’s Visual Communications Program in Flagstaff, AZ. To Goode, art stands in for the significance in human life. It allows us to rest our senses against it and bask in the illusion of its reality. Goode’s art draws the eye along vibrant lines and splashes of color. Ellen George attended the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland, and received a B.A. from Austin College in Sherman, TX. George makes studies in fragility, vitality and surprise. She is fascinated with small things that command a much larger space, calling us in for a closer look. FAN SUITE (SPD-50)’s bright colors and many layers draw the eye along a variety of paths that change the way the piece looks the longer you stare.

Gwen Davidson studied at Drake University in Florence, Italy, and received a B.F.A. in Painting from Drake University in Des Moines, IA followed by an M.F.A. in Painting from Portland State University in Portland, OR. Davidson’s paintings often begin with realistic studies of the landscape that she uses to identify recurring shapes, their organization, their characteristic colors, and how they change over time. Then, Davidson works towards abstraction by painting more freely, cutting the paper into pieces, and recomposing them. Jef Gunn received a B.A. in Fine Arts from Pasadena City College in Pasadena, CA and a B.F.A. from Marylhurst University in Portland, OR. Gunn has accepted residencies spanning the world from Seattle, WA, to Barcelona, Spain, and Paris, . Gunn began using encaustic in 1985, inspired by a painting by Joseph Goldberg. With encaustic, Gunn can bring together all of his methods: oils, papers and inks, fabric, tar, and gold. The work Gunn does draws on multiple lineages of art, culture and spirituality.

STEPHEN O’DONNELL DENY

FROELICK GALLERY ACRYLIC ON PANEL 12” X 12”

Stephen O’Donnell is an entirely self-taught painter who draws on a love of history and biography to create fascinating and beautiful imagery. Sometimes known as the “man in the dress” artist, gender-play is a common theme in O’Donnell’s work, along with a deep respect and admiration for the style of great classical paintings. “Deny” exhibits the lush colors and impeccable detail O’Donnell infuses into his work. Christopher St. John received a B.F.A. from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. St. John’s work touches on the impact of a place on the shape of our lives, the luck we have in living on a planet with a biosphere, the vocabulary of form, and impermanence. Animals and animalistic themes are common throughout St. John’s portfolio of work.

She is currently Head of Ceramics Area and Chairperson of the Art Department at Clark College in Vancouver, WA. Sherri Wolf earned a B.F.A. in Painting from the Museum Art School at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR, and an M.A. in Printmaking from the Chelsea College of Art in London, . Wolf’s images openly play with the fact that art is artifice, and evolve from a love of art history and a desire to present multiple levels of expression to the viewer. White Tulip with Venus is a piece from Wolf’s recent series portraying objects in front of excerpts from paintings. Fretta MM Cravens is an Oregon artist who loves nature and beauty. Her work counters a world, that can sometimes feel filled with chaos and ugliness. Her art captures the temporal and spatial aspects of plants through photography. Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, Cravens enlarges flowers and plants, inviting the viewer to take the time to fully engage in their beauty. Subtly confrontational, the details of the work are revealed over time, and a dialogue begins. The viewer and nature become equals, both deserving of care and study.

Gregg Renfrow received his B.F.A from San Francisco Art Institute and has exhibited both nationally and internationally since the mid-1970s. In his luminous, abstract compositions, Renfrow conveys his ever- changing view of the Californian light he has been observing over the course of his career. Working in layers, he pours mixtures of polymer and pigment over rectangular or square sheets of cast acrylic, creating brushless paintings full of depth and tonal gradations. Jim Riswold graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA with a triple B.A. distinction in the studies of Communications, Philosophy, and History. After being diagnosed with leukemia in 2000 and surviving for five years, Riswold quit his job as an advertising executive to become a full-time contemporary artist. PDX CONTEMPORARY ART DIGITAL PIGMENT PRINT 16” X 11”

American filmmaker, photographer and visual artist Gus Van Sant has been lauded for his experimental, independent projects and mainstream productions alike--from the acclaimed Drugstore Cowboy (1989) and My Own Private Idaho (1991) to Oscar-winning films such as Good Will Hunting (1997) and Milk (2008), both of which earned him Best Director nods from the Academy, in addition to Best Picture nominations. This photograph, “boys,” nods to the classic Polaroid style Van Sant is known for, while causing the viewer’s eye to search for a clear idea of who the subject really is. Heather Watkins received a double B.A. distinction in English and Classical Studies with a concentration in Art & Archaeology from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, and an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. Working with ink, cord, thread, cloth, and paper, Watkins submits these materials to many cycles of saturation, compression, intertwining, and transference. Through these physical processes, she investigates phenomena such as flow, stasis, circulation, and gravity.

He first became known for his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” (...OBEY...) sticker campaign while attending the Rhode Island School of Design. Fairey later created a series of posters supporting Barack Obama’s 2008 candidacy for President of the United States, including the iconic “HOPE” portrait. Fairey is known for his bold iconic style that is based on styling and idealizing images. Katherine Ace finds inspiration in art from ancient times to the present, and has an ongoing fascination with both figurative and still-life painting. Her recent work includes interpretations of classic Grimms’ Fairy Tales and invented portraits of undiminished women. Her work plays with and subverts realism, creating intriguing contradictions and opposites.

Iván Carmona, an artist from Puerto Rico, pulls inspiration from the world around him, the colors and memories from his homeland, and physical tactile representations of his experiences. Carmona’s American Dream embodies the forward movement of hope restrained by the realities of the world we live in. D.E. May studied under Larry Stobie at Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, OR. May’s humility, dedication, and sureness of purpose are reflected in the things he created. His meticulous abstractions hold a subtle magic and appear as both documents of the past and proposals for a future architecture. His pieces remind us of how objects gather energy and meaning, becoming real through their use.
