Generously sponsored by: 158173BDY_r2_MCA_ArtAuction_BODY.indd 1 9/25/19 10:31 PM WELCOME Welcome to the 2019 Beneft Art Auction! It is with enthusiastic pride and eager anticipation that we share with you this catalogue of stunning contemporary artworks to be auctioned on Saturday, November 16, 2019, benefting the MCA Chicago. We are thrilled that MCA Trustees Cari B. Sacks and Kenneth C. Grifin have served as this year’s Beneft Art Auction co-chairs, and doubly so to welcome back Oliver Barker, Senior Director, Chairman, Sotheby’s Europe, as our auctioneer. Sotheby’s continues to play an integral role in making this MCA tradition a lively and successful event. Each of the contributing artists and their gallery representatives have ofered no less than a piece of themselves toward the museum’s pursuit of aesthetic and intellectual heights. For this you have our heartfelt gratitude. Since our last auction in 2015, the MCA has realized an evolution of both its institutional initiatives and physical spaces, following a lauded renovation that transformed 12,000 square feet within the building into admission-free gathering spaces. This investment in a more generous and hospitable place for our public coincided with our fftieth anniversary in 2017. As part of our conception for these new public spaces, we also kicked of a fve-year initiative for free admission to all visitors age eighteen and under, and added evening hours on Tuesdays and Fridays. On our main foor, the Commons places artistic and civic exchange at the heart of the museum to encourage formal and informal dialogue as well as interactions among artists, visitors, and communities. Just above the Commons and overlooking Lake Michigan, a new learning wing includes state-of-the-art classrooms that host workshops for all ages. The Beneft Art Auction is an essential part of realizing the MCA’s ardent commitment to creating exhibitions and programs that champion revelatory art and spark civic transformation. We are currently poised to make the next leap in strengthening Chicago’s creative and social fabric, and we will continue to serve as a model to contemporary art museums everywhere. In 1968 the MCA held its very frst Beneft Art Auction against a backdrop of social tumult in Chicago and the greater United States, and the event became the original in a rich history of art museums looking to works of art as sources for funds to beneft institutional ideals. In this crucial moment we are honored to present a collection of works made by the world’s most infuential artists of the day to support the MCA’s mission. Please accept our sincere gratitude as we say thank you for joining us, and we wish you the best of luck at the auction block! The dialogue is inaudible, but an intertitle appears on screen: “HER: Who is your favorite fi lm- Mmaker?” “HIM: Miles Davis.” This moment of Black audiovisual appreciation anticipates a conversation between Black popular cul- ture scholars Uri McMillan and Mark Anthony Neal that inspires the subtitle for this In Focus dossier: “Music Video as Black Art.”1 McMillan and Neal interpret the complexity of contemporary Black music video production as a “return” to its status as “art”— and specifi cally as Black art—that self-consciously uses visual and sonic citations from various realms of Black expressive culture in- cluding the visual and performing arts, fashion, design, and, obvi- ously, the rich history of Black music and Black music production. McMillan and Neal implicitly refer to an earlier, more recogniz- able moment in Black music video history, the mid-1990s and early 2000s, when Hype Williams defi ned music video aesthetics as one of the single most important innovators of the form. Although it is rarely addressed in the literature on music videos, the glare of the prolifi c fi lmmaker’s infl uence extends beyond his signature lumi- nous visual style; Williams distinguished the Black music video as a creative laboratory for a new generation of artists such as Arthur Jafa, Kahlil Joseph, Bradford Young, and Jenn Nkiru.

  • Modeling On-Line Art Auction Dynamics Using Functional Data
Statistical Science 2006, Vol. 21, No. 2, 179–193 DOI: 10.1214/088342306000000196 c Institute of Mathematical Statistics, 2006 Modeling On-Line Art Auction Dynamics Using Functional Data Analysis Srinivas K. Reddy and Mayukh Dass Abstract. In this paper, we examine the price dynamics of on-line art auc- tions of modern Indian art using functional data analysis. The purpose here is not just to understand what determines the final prices of art objects, but also the price movement during the entire auction. We identify several factors, such as artist characteristics (established or emerging artist; prior sales history), art characteristics (size; painting medium—canvas or paper), competition characteristics (current number of bidders; current number of bids) and auction design characteristics (opening bid; position of the lot in the auction), that explain the dynamics of price movement in an on-line art auction. We find that the effects on price vary over the duration of the auc- tion, with some of these effects being stronger at the beginning of the auc- tion (such as the opening bid and historical prices realized). In some cases, the rate of change in prices (velocity) increases at the end of the auction (for canvas paintings and paintings by established artists). Our analysis sug- gests that the opening bid is positively related to on-line auction price levels of art at the beginning of the auction, but its effect declines toward the end of the auction. The order in which the lots appear in an art auction is nega- tively related to the current price level, with this relationship decreasing to- ward the end of the auction.

  • Project Report: Team 4 Predicting the Price of Art at Auction
Project Report: Team 4 Predicting the Price of Art at Auction Bhavya Agarwal, Farhan Ali, Prema Kolli, and Xiufeng Yang Department of Computer Science, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-4400 {bhavya.agarwal,farhan.ali}@stonybrook.edu,{pkolli,xiuyang}@cs. stonybrook.edu http://www.cs.stonybrook.edu/~skiena/591/projects 1 Challenge An art auction is the sale of art works in a competition setting. Our primary goal is to predict the price of an art piece/painting in an art auction. We are focusing only on auctions, which occur in auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's. In this project, we try to predict the price of art to be sold at Sotheby's auction in London on 3 December 2014. We are trying to build a generic model, capable of predicting price of any piece of art to be sold based on a variety of features associated with an artist, auction house and the piece of art itself. There is a famous quote in the movie "The Monuments Men" where the actor George Clooney talks about the importance/significance of art. He says that wiping out any generation's art history is equivalent to wiping out the entire generation itself. "You can wipe out the entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground and somehow they will still find their way back. But you can destroy their history, destroy their achievements and this is it they never existed. That is what we are exactly fighting for." Predicting the price of a painting in an art auction turns out be a challenging task as there are lot of functional dynamics involved in the whole auction process.
