Generously sponsored by: 158173BDY_r2_MCA_ArtAuction_BODY.indd 1 9/25/19 10:31 PM WELCOME Welcome to the 2019 Beneft Art Auction! It is with enthusiastic pride and eager anticipation that we share with you this catalogue of stunning contemporary artworks to be auctioned on Saturday, November 16, 2019, benefting the MCA Chicago. We are thrilled that MCA Trustees Cari B. Sacks and Kenneth C. Grifin have served as this year’s Beneft Art Auction co-chairs, and doubly so to welcome back Oliver Barker, Senior Director, Chairman, Sotheby’s Europe, as our auctioneer. Sotheby’s continues to play an integral role in making this MCA tradition a lively and successful event. Each of the contributing artists and their gallery representatives have ofered no less than a piece of themselves toward the museum’s pursuit of aesthetic and intellectual heights. For this you have our heartfelt gratitude. Since our last auction in 2015, the MCA has realized an evolution of both its institutional initiatives and physical spaces, following a lauded renovation that transformed 12,000 square feet within the building into admission-free gathering spaces. This investment in a more generous and hospitable place for our public coincided with our fftieth anniversary in 2017. As part of our conception for these new public spaces, we also kicked of a fve-year initiative for free admission to all visitors age eighteen and under, and added evening hours on Tuesdays and Fridays. On our main foor, the Commons places artistic and civic exchange at the heart of the museum to encourage formal and informal dialogue as well as interactions among artists, visitors, and communities. Just above the Commons and overlooking Lake Michigan, a new learning wing includes state-of-the-art classrooms that host workshops for all ages. The Beneft Art Auction is an essential part of realizing the MCA’s ardent commitment to creating exhibitions and programs that champion revelatory art and spark civic transformation. We are currently poised to make the next leap in strengthening Chicago’s creative and social fabric, and we will continue to serve as a model to contemporary art museums everywhere. In 1968 the MCA held its very frst Beneft Art Auction against a backdrop of social tumult in Chicago and the greater United States, and the event became the original in a rich history of art museums looking to works of art as sources for funds to beneft institutional ideals. In this crucial moment we are honored to present a collection of works made by the world’s most infuential artists of the day to support the MCA’s mission. Please accept our sincere gratitude as we say thank you for joining us, and we wish you the best of luck at the auction block!
