The reader learns of John J. Pershing's activities from childhood onward, and then much more: his thoughts before and after the activities, and about the persons and organizations that were with him and against him in those 57 years. Those insights are plentiful throughout, and well worth the time spent in the reading. But the book contains many more rewards for the reader. They are the result of the insightful and diligent efforts of John T. Greenwood, Ph.D., Editor of the volume. Greenwood was able to find, evaluate, and organize thousands of pages of several unpublished versions of Pershing's life that Pershing had created with the assistance of trusted colleagues. The papers are retained at the Library of Congress's Manuscript Division.Dr. Greenwood's efforts extended far beyond diligent and appropriate editorial functions. He conducted additional extensive research on Pershing and his activities, and the persons and situations relevant to them. The result is a coherent autobiography that is true to Pershing's original intent while reinforcing it mightily. Here are just a few examples of Greenwood's enhancement of the product: a. The Editor's Note about the process of creating the lucid memoir from the multitude of materials while adhering to Pershing's goals. b. The Introduction that explains the background of the process followed by Pershing and his assistants in developing the manuscripts. c. Brief annotations within the text that help the reader understand the account more deeply, while maintaining the smooth flow of Pershing's narrative. d. Ten Appendices that add more detail about events in the memoir. e. The Biographical Appendix, with information about 247 persons germane to Pershing's life and activities.Everyone who buys this book gains a deeper understanding of John J. Pershing and his influence upon pivotal events in U.S. military history, and also acquires an exceptional collection of reference materials on those events and the persons involved. It is unique in the best definition of the term.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pershing's Reminiscences of Life and Service in the "Old Army"By A. A. NofiA summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com,'At his death, John J. Pershing left several drafts of a memoir dealing with his life and career before the First World War. Army historian Greenwood prepared this version by carefully editing the various drafts together, adding a number of important documents plus and supplying missing detail in a biographical appendix and extensive footnotes, which together take up about 200 pages. The result is a surprisingly frank look at life in the “Old Army” from the waning days of the Indian Wars to the eve of the Great War. Pershing can be found standing up for Native Americans, criticizing USMA practices, bucking the brass, and more. For contemporary readers, perhaps the most interesting and valuable parts of the book are his accounts of service in the “Moro War” in the Philippines, where the practices he adopted in the pacification of the historically unbowed Moslem peoples of the southern Philippines are quite contrary to those claimed by many who have commented on the subject. This is a valuable work not only for those interested in the last years of the frontier army and long forgotten campaigns on the frontier, or in Cuba, the Philippines, Manchuria (where Pershing served as an observer), and Mexico, but also for students of pacification and nation building. For the full review, see StrategyPage.Com1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Would highly recommend.By Dana UncapherHave done extensive research on Pershing and this is in his words - not someones interpretation of his personal life and service to our country. Would highly recommend.

Few American military figures are more revered than General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing (1860–1948), who is most famous for leading the American Expeditionary Forces in . The only soldier besides George to be promoted to the highest rank in the U.S. Army (General of the Armies), Pershing was a mentor to the generation of generals who led America's forces during the Second World War.Though Pershing published a two- volume memoir, My Experiences in the World War, and has been the subject of numerous biographies, few know that he spent many years drafting a memoir of his experiences prior to the First World War. In My Life Before the World War, 1860–1917, John T. Greenwood rescues this vital resource from obscurity, making Pershing's valuable insights into key events in history widely available for the first time.Pershing performed frontier duty against the Apaches and Sioux from 1886–1891, fought in Cuba in 1898, served three tours of duty in the Philippines, and was an observer with the Japanese Army in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese War. He also commanded the Mexican Punitive Expedition to capture Pancho Villa in 1916–1917. My Life Before the World War provides a rich personal account of events, people, and places as told by an observer at the center of the action. Carefully edited and annotated, this memoir is a significant contribution to our understanding of a legendary American soldier and the historic events in which he participated.

"A fascinating read. Pershing comes across as diplomatically and politically astute?a far more nuanced than one gets from his standard biographers."?Timothy K. Nenninger, editor of The Way of Duty, Honor, Country: The Memoir of General Charles Pelot Summerall"A significant contribution to American military history. Pershing had a remarkable memory, and this memoir details his life from his childhood in a small Missouri town to his arrival at West Point and his military assignments across the globe. Greenwood's scholarship is excellent."?Edward M. Coffman, author of The War to End All Wars: The American Military Experience in World War I"It would be difficult to overestimate the impact that Pershing had on American military history. The man served as model and mentor to the generation of military minds that brought the nation through World War II. His memoirs deserve to be read and appreciated, but they require the carefully crafted context that Greenwood has provided."?On Point"So many who achieve great things become fixed in stone as monuments. My Life before the War is a reminder that John J. Pershing was a real, living, breathing man who lived through and shaped extraordinary times. For any with an interest in either the man or the times, this book is highly recommended."?The Journal of Military History"[. . .] What distinguishes My Life Before the World War is the author's sense of service. It is not about Pershing the man but Pershing the public servant."?The Historian"This book is an invaluable resource for soldiers and civilians because it highlights the astonishing scope of one man's life experience, from Civil War partisan atrocities to the command of two million troops in France in 1918.[. . .] [T]he most important lesson of My Life Before the World War derives from appreciating Pershing's disappointments, losses, and things he did not complete. Even more than success, it is failure and loss that marks our humanity."?Army HistoryAbout the AuthorJohn T. Greenwood is former chief of the Office of Medical History, Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Army. He is the editor of several books, including Normandy to Victory: The War Diary of General Courtney H. Hodges and the First U.S. Army.
