! Dissecting Owl Pellets NEW What's an owl pellet? Owls eat small rodents and birds whole and digest only what is needed. They then cough up a pellet containing parts of the prey that are not needed, such as bones and fur. Generally, the pellets contain entire skeletons of their prey. Using tweezers and toothpicks, we will pick apart the pellets to locate and identify animal bones. Our pellets are clean and safe to handle, so their dissection is a great way for us to learn about an owl's diet and about how food chains work in nature.
