HOTTEST NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE DESTINATION Mountain Biking Has a New, Premier Destination in the Spectacular Mountains of Baja California Sur WORLD-CLASS SINGLETRACK TRAILS BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR’S HOTTEST NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE DESTINATION Mountain biking has a new, premier destination in the spectacular mountains of Baja California Sur. Rancho Cacachilas is an adventure guest ranch on 14,000 hectares in the Cacachilas mountain range between La Paz and La Ventana—and it is the perfect place to test your skills on world-class singletrack trails. The Ranch boasts over 40km of mountain biking trails that are designed for intermediate and advanced riders. An extensive number of new trails are also under development as part of their multi-year master trail plan. Many of the routes are built by revitalizing historical trails that have been used for centuries in this region of Baja California Sur; trails that have been carefully preserved and improved to sustainably support the demanding sport of mountain biking. The only question we have for you is... are you ready to ride? 2 // RANCHO CACACHILAS World Class Baja Singletrack Trails Riders can explore new lines every day with flowy trails, fast and exhilarating descents, moderate to challenging climbs, and extraordinary ridge top views of the Baja Peninsula and the shimmering, deep blue Sea of Cortez. The terrain is a “granite dryland forest”—you’ll be navigating spectacular singletrack with both narrow and wider trails, awesome berms for S-turns, technical rocky traverses, arroyo crossings, and areas of coarse sandy soil. All trails are designed and built to IMBA standards with attention to the special nature of this rugged southern Baja terrain and climate. Drainage on the trail system is outstanding and in alignment with the strong conservation ethos of Rancho Cacachilas. Enjoy a private ranch complex, and all mountain biking day or multi-day trips include an expert, bilingual mountain biking guide. BUILDING TO IMBA STANDARDS International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) began training our local crew in 2014 to design, build, and maintain trails. Our goal is to create more than 70 kilometers of IMBA standard, singletrack trail and become an official IMBA Ride Center™. It was a beautiful day; I was stoked to go ride with the kids from the school. We started on smooth, flowy trails... I am really impressed. WATCH THIS BAJA MOUNTAIN BIKING VIDEO 4 // RANCHO CACACHILAS Hello Baja California Sur - Mexico’s Adventure Destination! Baja California Sur is the southernmost state on Mexico’s Baja peninsula. Rancho Cacachilas is made up of several large parcels of mountainous terrain, bordering the Gulf of California (a.k.a., the Sea of Cortez) between La Paz and El Sargento. The property is enclosed and gated, with entrances easily accessed from La Paz and Los Cabos via paved roads. Take in the dramatic landscape with steep, rock-strewn slopes at the higher elevations that lead to a large network of arroyos. The forces of erosion have resulted in a large alluvial plain along the lower elevations of the eastern portion. These plains eventually lead to the beaches of La Ventana Bay. Day and multiday access to the ranch is through our Mountain and Bike Hub in El Sargento at Ventana Bay. Multi-day access is also via Chivato. Rancho Cacachilas When should you visit? • November - April offers the best weather due to cooler temperatures (50s-60s to low 80s) and limited rainfall. • October and May are early and late season, and offer the lowest crowds. • December and January is peak tourism season. • Rancho Cacachilas is open October 1st-May 31st. 5 // RANCHO CACACHILAS the adventure guest ranch Come ride for an incredible Baja singletrack day, or stay for a week and explore all the trails! Chivato has WIFI, a central bathhouse with hot water and bucket showers, and provides hearty and delicious farm-to-table meals from the extensive organic gardens and award-winning creamery at the ranch. At Chivato, guests relax after a great day of riding with cocktails by the swimming pool that overlooks Isla Cerralvo (Jacques Cousteau Island) in the Sea of Cortez. • The Area of La Paz in the Southern Part of the Peninsula of Baja
LANDSCAPE, RAW MATERIAL, AND PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENT PATTERNS IN THE AREA OF LA PAZ, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR HARUMI FUJITA CENTRO INAH BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR KARIM BULHUSEN MUÑOZ ESCUELA NACIONAL DE ANTROPOLOGÍA E HISTORIA The area of La Paz in the southern part of the peninsula of Baja California is one of the most important areas from the prehistoric period of approximately 9,400 years ago. The archaeological evidence indicates a high density of sites near the coastal zone, composed principally of campsites and rhyolite quarry-workshops, while in the granitic mountain area of the Sierra de las Cacachilas and El Novillo, various pictograph sites were recorded. LANDSCAPE The area of La Paz, Baja California Sur, was one of the most important and attractive areas for early human occupation in the prehistory of the Baja California peninsula (Figure 1). La Paz Bay, in the Gulf of California, is an extensive and calm bay that has a variety of marine species. The ancient population took advantage of the marine food resources, in addition to terrestrial resources, as is manifested in recorded archaeological sites. Approximately 8,500 years ago, the archipelago of Espíritu Santo Island was connected to the peninsula, so La Paz Bay was much more extensive (Fujita and Melgar 2014). The Sierra de las Cacachilas, which is composed of Cerro del Puerto, Cerro de la Cienaga, and other hills, consists of whitish granitic hills with a maximum elevation of 1,260 m at Cerro del Puerto (Figure 2). This makes it stand out from other areas in the city of La Paz and its outskirts.
