Baja California Sur is the southernmost MEXICO state on Mexico’s Baja peninsula. NEVER LOOKED Rancho Cacachilas is located on the eastern side of Baja California Sur, between the historic capital city of La Paz and the famous windsurfing town of El Sargento and Ventana Bay. This is our primary overnight resort. It includes a large, comfortable community room with Wi-Fi, a fireplace, a small library, a large multi-purpose palapa, an indoor and outdoor kitchen, a covered dining area, and a small soaking pool overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

Los Pisos—Remote Wilderness Camp
This is a remote group camp (minimum 6 guests) with cabin tents spread out along the mountain ridge lines, and 2 centralized camp kitchens. What is the best airport to fly into in order to get to Rancho Cacachilas? TRAVELER’S TIP From San Diego, CA: Walk Both the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) located in San Jose del Cabo, and the Manuel Márquez de León directly across the border to International Airport (LAP) located in La Paz, offer easy your boarding gate at Tijuana entry. It is a comfortable 2-hour drive via bus or private car from Border Express (CBX). This is a Los Cabos International Airport to La Paz, Mexico. convenient, low-cost way to grab a nonstop fight to La Paz, MX from From the La Paz airport, it is a 20-30 minute taxi ride (approx. $26 USD) or Uber ride to the Rancho Cacachilas the U.S.-Mexico border. We provide all of our overnight Ranch guests with a private shuttle van to Rancho Cacachilas from La Paz. Our staff will meet you at the Rancho Cacachilas Administrative Office or the La Paz bus station to then drive you to Rancho Cacachilas. Day tour shuttles are available from El Sargento only, and shuttles to/from La Ventana & SJD can be arranged via EcoBajaTours or EcoShuttlesLV.
WHAT DO I NEED TO TRAVEL INTO MEXICO? International travelers need a valid passport to travel to Baja California Sur, MX. No visas are required. Mexican Nationals need a valid Mexican ID.

OUR WORKING RANCH IS GROUNDED IN SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY.
You can be a part of enjoying this ecosystem as a responsible visitor. The fragile dryland forest ecosystem of the Cacachilas mountains in Baja California Sur can be easily damaged by irresponsible use and visitation. We prioritize sustainable land and watershed management by doing our part in the conservation and protection of both.
Water Management We carefully conserve and protect water here at the ranch. Rainfall is very limited and we depend on hurricanes to fill our aquifers. We provide dry composting toilets and bucket showers that use solar- heated water throughout the ranch. Meanwhile, all the water we use at the ranch is put back into or onto the ground. For the sake of our gardens, trees, and desert plants, we ask that you bring and use biodegradable items wherever possible. We provide fresh filtered water at our camps and provide portable water filters for your water bottles when you’re out on the trail.
CAN I DRINK THE WATER? Yes, all water, teas, coffees, and ice available at Rancho Cacachilas is made with filtered water. Bottled water, and portable filters for your day trips, are available free during your stay at Rancho Cacachilas for all guests. You should not drink the tap water.

Is there a minimum age for Ranch Cacachilas? Not really, as long as youngsters are totally in the care of their parents. This is a remote, dryland wilderness. There are no man-made playgrounds or daycare at Rancho Cacachilas. Kids under 10 may have less success riding our intermediate to advanced trails, but they love hiking. If you are unsure, please do not hesitate to contact us.
When is the best time of year to go? Winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, is the best time of year to visit Baja. November through April offers the best weather for visiting Baja California Sur due to cooler temperatures and limited rainfall. October and May are early and late season and offer the lowest crowds. December and January is peak tourism season here. Rancho Cacachilas is open from October 1st to May 31st, for day and multi-day tours, workshops, and special retreats.
What’s the weather like? Baja’s summer season lasts approximately from May 26th to October 3rd, with an average daily high temperature above 93°F. The winter season lasts approximately from December 1st to February 25th, with an average daily high temperature below 79°F.
Are Rancho Cacachilas and Baja California Sur, Mexico safe? Yes, Rancho Cacachilas is very safe. The ranch is privately owned, gated, and also very secluded. Beyond the Ranch, hundreds of thousands of tourists travel safely to La Paz, Todo Santos, Cabo San Lucas, and San Jose de Cabo without incident each year. Do I need Mexican pesos for my Ranch visit? You don’t need pesos at the ranch, but it is always useful to have some national currency on hand for small purchases in local shops outside the ranch.

Are credit cards accepted at the ranch? Yes, but we do not charge directly in the Ranch. At the end of your stay we will clear your bill at our Rancho Cacachilas Mountain & Bike Hub in El Sargento.

What if I have dietary restrictions? No problem - let us know on your registration form and we will do our best to accommodate you. We regularly handle gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian dietary needs. Or, contact us here and we can work directly with your needs.
I don’t speak Spanish, will I be able to talk to my guides? Of course! All our guides are bilingual in Spanish and English.
I heard there are scorpions and rattlesnakes in Baja—is this something I should worry about? Our guides will educate you on traveling safely in the Baja California Sur Cacachilas mountains. Similar to the US Southwestern Desert areas or grizzly and mountain lion country in the Northern Rockies, responsible behavior is key. (There are no grizzlies or mountain lions in BCS!)
What amenities do you offer? How does it compare to a hotel? This is an adventure resort with wilderness camps. Lodging is bunk rooms or glamping cabin tents with camp cots on hard packed ground with rugs. Shared bathroom facilities include dry composting toilets and bucket shower stalls. They are located close to cabin tents. There is hot and cold water thanks to solar hot water heaters.
Is there Wi-Fi available? Yes, at El Chivato adventure resort and camp only. There is no Wi-Fi at Los Pisos or the working ranches. (There may be cell service depending on your provider, but don’t count on it working.) You’ll love being disconnected off the grid during your stay, trust us on this!
Is there a laundry facility available? We do not offer this service at the ranch based on the amount of water consumption. We encourage local businesses in El Sargento to deliver this service. Tell your guide and we will be happy to arrange the delivery and pick it up for you.

What should I do with my valuables while staying on site at Rancho Cacachilas? The ranch is privately owned, gated, and also very secluded. All of our staff is proud to be part of this project and our policy on honesty is clearly defined. If you feel better securing your valuables, we can arrange to have them placed in a safe during your stay.
Are multi-day trips all inclusive? Yes, you get lodging, all 3 meals, and all activities when you book a multi-day tour. Bike rentals are additional and not included in multi-day or day trips.
When I book a multi-day tour, can I participate in any of the day trips you provide? Definitely, we will have different options available each day.
Can I do a Sea of Cortez adventure as well as a mountain ranch adventure? Yes! See our Tours for mountains and sea packages.
Can I extend my stay, if choose to? Absolutely! You can add on additional days and nights via your guide when you are here, or contact us to extend your stay before you arrive. Our all-inclusive pricing that covers lodging, meals, and activities makes it easy. We can transport you back to La Paz or El Sargento after your stay for your plane, bus, private car, or other transportation connections home.
Do you have bikes available for rent? Yes! We have high performance bikes available for rent at our Mountain & Bike Hub.
I’m a beginner when it comes to hiking and biking. Can I still participate in these activities? Yes, but be prepared to walk your bike on some of the trail sections. Our trails are mostly intermediate level and advanced, for biking. For hiking, go at your own pace and enjoy the views.
Can I hire a guide for biking or hiking day trips? All our day trips are guided. Contact us to learn more and reserve your trip.
Is there a minimum number of people required for day trips? A minimum of 2 participants is required for any day tour. Day trips for single participants are based on availability and ranch operations, and costs $20 USD additional with the tour price.

Founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador, Hernan Cortes, and named Santa Cruz, today La Paz is a beautiful seaside city with over 290,000 people. A popular local pastime is paddle boarding in the Bay of La Paz with breathtaking views of the city’s skyline. World class hiking and mountain biking are also less than an hour away.

El Triunfo is a picturesque, historic mining town EL TRIUNFO located 45 minutes from La Paz.
When silver and gold were discovered in the nearby mountains in 1862, miners from around the world arrived to settle in the region. In its heyday in the late 1880s, El Triunfo had a population of over 4,000 people and was the largest town in Baja California Sur. In the early 1900s, a combination of factors—including hurricanes, the Mexican Revolution, and a drop in global silver prices—led to the town’s economic decline. El Triunfo - Historic Mining Town
Today, El Triunfo has a population of just over 300 people and features an extraordinary mining heritage museum, the Museo Ruta de Plata. This museum was built in 2018 by the renowned museum design firm, Ralph Applebaum & Associates.

Isla Cerralvo, “Jaques Cousteau Island” Located off the coast of Ventana Bay, Isla Cerralvo is an island that has many steep bluffs and sandy beaches. It’s rich in biodiversity both on land and in the sea, and is best known for its abundant marine life (including whales, marlins, and manta rays), unique underwater Ventana Bay - Kiteboarding Paradise topography, and ocean currents. Isla Cerralvo is a popular destination for big game fishing and scuba diving alike.
Recently the Mexican Government renamed the island “Isla Jacques Cousteau” in honor of the French oceanographer who led several expeditions to the area. It was Jacques Cousteau who first called the Sea of Cortez the “world’s aquarium.”

Surfing, art galleries, festivals, and shops are a big draw for this small Mexican town... TOdos santos ’ Todo Santos is an increasingly popular seaside & baja s town located on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. It backs up to the Sierra de la pacific coast Laguna mountain range and is surrounded by organic orchards of fresh mangos, papayas, avocados, and other crops. Located just an hour away from both Los Cabos to the south, and La Paz to the north, Todos Santos makes for a convenient day trip or an extended weekend destination.
Popular with artists, Todo Santos is known for its many galleries, annual art, music festivals, fine dining, boutique hotels, and historic Spanish colonial mission. Surfing Mecca - The Pacific Coast Todo Santos is Baja’s first “Pueblo Magico” or “Magical Town”.
To the south, beaches like San Pedrito and Los Cerritos are popular surf spots known for their famous surf breaks.
