The research programme (2012–2015) seeks to understand the relationship between landscape history and settlement development, with a particular focus on the role that water (rainfall, rivers, and groundwater) played in the rise and demise of early urban societies in South Africa (Mapungubwe), Zimbabwe (Great Zimbabwe), and Ethiopia (Aksum). The study primarily employs geoarchaeological approaches, field research and laboratory analyses of soils to reconstruct the history of the environment of the three study areas. This proposal provides an outline of the fieldwork which we are planning to do at the Limpopo-Shashe Confluence. By eliciting environmental and archaeological records, the proposed research will investigate local landscape sequences and will compare and contrast them with each other in order to assess the local impact of, and responses to, environmental and, in particular hydrological, and cultural changes over time in the middle Limpopo basin. -

Daar word nagespoor hoe die spesifieke sosiopolitieke konteks waarbinne Afrikaanse rock ontwikkel, die lirieke en styl daarvan beïnvloed. Afleidings word gemaak oor die implikasies wat Afrikaanse rock inhou ten opsigte van die Afrikanerjeug se identiteit in die nuwe millennium. Ter demonstrasie van hierdie interdissiplinêre en kon- tekstuele ondersoek, word ’n gevallestudie onderneem van die Afrikaanse punkrock- groep Fokofpolisiekar. Nie net word gekyk na die ontstaan en invloed van die groep nie, maar 'n beduidende deel van die tesis word bestee aan hul lirieke, wat vanuit ’n literêre oogpunt beskou en ondersoek word. In hierdie studie sal daar ook klem gelê word op die sosiopolitieke faktore wat tot die opbloei van die Afrikaanse musiekbedryf gelei het. Deur die analise van dié kunstenaars se lirieke, sal ek vasstel of hulle wel betekenisvolle werk van literêre gehalte lewer. Ek het spesifiek hierdie musikante gekies omdat hulle jong eietydse musikante is. 2 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to focus on the song texts of artists, Karen Zoid, Fokofpolisiekar, The Buckfever Underground (and Toast Coetzer) and Bok van Blerk and to determine their function in today’s cultural reality, and whether these musicians and their music have an influence on today’s youth and their search for a Cultural Identity. This study will also focus on the socio-political factors that led to the rise of the Afrikaans Music Industry. By analyzing these artists’ lyrics, I want to determine whether they are significant works of literary quality. These musicians were chosen because they are regarded as young contemporary musicians. -

Arts and Culture-Final.indd 25 11/28/17 11:53 AM ARTS AND CULTURE The mandate of the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) is to: • preserve, develop, protect and promote the cultural, heritage and linguistic diversity and legacy of South Africa; • lead nation building and social cohesion through societal transformation; • enhance archives and records management structures and systems and promote access to information; and • provide leadership to the art and culture sector so as to accelerate its transformation. The National Development Plan (NDP) emphasises the need for transforming society and uniting the country. These long- term objectives guide the department’s Strategic Plan and activities over the medium term, as do Outcome 1 (quality basic education), Outcome 4 (decent employment through inclusive growth) and Outcome 14 (a diverse, socially cohesive society with a common national identity) of government’s 2014-2019 Medium Term Strategic Framework. Over the medium term, the department would focus on developing arts, culture and heritage infrastructure; positioning the cultural and creative industries as drivers of economic growth and job creation; and contributing to social cohesion and nation building. Developing arts, culture and heritage infrastructure The DAC’s infrastructure development initiatives aim to establish and maintain world-class heritage sites to boost tourism and create job opportunities. Construction of the liberation heritage route, which will consist of a series of sites that express the key aspects of the National Coat of Arms South Africa’s coat of arms was adopted in 2000. -

POPULAR EXPRESSIONS OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN NATIONALISM(S): CONVERGENCES, DIVERGENCES, AND RECONCILIATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND ZIMBABWE By Blessing Shingirirai Mavima A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American and African Studies – Doctor of Philosophy 2019 ABSTRACT POPULAR EXPRESSIONS OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN NATIONALISM(S): CONVERGENCES, DIVERGENCES, AND RECONCILIATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND ZIMBABWE By Blessing Shingirirai Mavima Popular Expressions of Pan-Africanism and Southern African Nationalism(s): Convergences, Divergences, and Reconciliations in South Africa and Zimbabwe is a dissertation study that traces the transformations, reveals the tensions, and critically analyzes diverging and converging trajectories of different manifestations of African nationalism, including ethnic nationalism, state nationalism, and Pan-Africanism using contemporary South Africa and Zimbabwe as sites of analyses. Focusing on the metropolitan provinces of Gauteng and Harare respectively, I use the study to interrogate how popular expressions of African nationalism have emerged and evolved in the neighboring nations during their anti-colonial/anti-apartheid struggles throughout the 20 th century, and how they exist today. Presenting a thesis that I call nationalisms from below, the research study reveals how these manifestations of nationalism are imagined, practiced, and represente d by the initiatives and actions of different members of the civil society including artists, activists, laborers, and migrants in the two countries’ contemporary politics and society. My findings lead to a nuanced determination of the factors that influence the intersections, divergences, and convergences of what I refer to in the study as Africa’s tripartite nationalist expressions and identities—ethnicism, African Nationalism, and Pan- Africanism. -

Department of Arts and Culture Annual Performance Plan 2016/17 Foreword by the Minister of Arts and Culture This year started with racism rearing its ugly head in social media and in other mediums of our society. It gathered momentum in University campuses and elsewhere in our country. The country has witnessed the graphic and unashamedly racist language from some individuals who seem to be nostalgic of the oppressive and painful past. It should be mentioned that the majority of South Africans aspire to a united and socially cohesive South Africa. Therefore, as a nation we should not allow certain individuals to take us back to that painful past. We have to reflect on and creatively explore ways of advancing nation- building, social cohesion and reconciliation. At the beginning of this term of office Social Cohesion and Nation Building became a stand- alone government outcome, Outcome 14: “A diverse, socially cohesive society with a common national identity”. It became clear that nation building and social cohesion is a priority in our country as the National Development Plan reflects that: “Despite progress since 1994, South Africa remains divided. Many schools, suburbs and places of worship are integrated, but many more are not. South Africa remains one of the most unequal economies in the world. The privilege attached to race, class, space and gender has not been fully reversed. The History of the Mapungubwe Collection Stileynel.Pdf
In 1932, when Ernst and Jerry van Graan stumbled upon ancient artefacts on the summit of an unnamed hill in the far-flung northern reaches of what was once the old Transvaal, they had no idea that an act of placing a few fragments of the finds into a small box and sending it to the University of Pretoria would lead to the formation of one of the greatest archaeological collections in southern Africa. The account of this discovery, reported to Prof. Leo Fouché in 1933, was the beginning of archaeological research by the University of Pretoria and so, ultimately, the foundation of the Mapungubwe collection. Today the collection under the management of the Mapungubwe Museum is renowned for its significant gold artefacts, among them the famous gold rhinoceros, beautifully crafted low-fired ceramic vessels, glass trade beads, bone implements and numerous other objects made from a variety of raw materials such as ivory and shell. The history of the collection is by no means simple. It is fragmentary and complicated although it reveals a fascinating insight into decisions made by the University, as well as conservation efforts and the curatorial management of this vast collection. * ‘The Rissik Bowl’ poem in Museum archive, author unknown 1933. This nationally significant collection of gold artefacts has been researched since the 1930s, but active conservation began only in 1999 to ensure its long-term preservation. The focus of this article is mainly on the stabilization of the entire gold collection, which involved efforts to arrest fragmentation, re-unite dissociated fragments and bring about considerable improvements to the collection. Work included creating sufficient support to enable the safe handling and packaging of objects in order to ensure research could be undertaken without further damage to the objects. The gold collection has been consistently researched for many decades, during which time significant amounts of materials analyses and other research data have accumulated. During a preliminary study of the collection in 1999 by conservators from the British Museum, suggestions were made for future conservation and since then, efforts by the Mapungubwe Museum have resulted in the formation of strategic partnerships, garnered support and funding to initiate a gold conservation programme. -

University of Cape Town Abstract In Africa and elsewhere, producers form a critical dimension to archaeological reconstructions of the political economy. However, few studies address the relationship between producers and the political economy from the vantage point of production sites. This study addresses the position of metal producers in the regional political economy of Iron Age (AD 200 – 1900) communities in southern Africa through an in-depth analysis of one production locale, Shankare. Shankare is a production and habitation site located in close proximity to the Lolwe mineral body in Phalaborwa. Studying the organisation of production, identity of producers, mechanisms of exchange and evidence of consumption at Shankare provided an important platform to assess producers in the context of the domestic and regional economy. Research at Shankare and surrounding sites revealed that production was characterised by a community of homestead based producers located in proximity to the ore source.
