SONS OF DON BOSCO SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SALESIAN BISHOPS 1884 to 2001 by Charles N. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse crated many other bishops.

VIE OBLATE LIFE TOME CINQUANTE NEUF / 1 VOLUME FIFTY NIN2 / 1 2000 OTTAWA, CANADA Fortuné de Mazenod à la maison des Missionnaires d’Aix Comportements et convictions (1818-1823) SUMMARY: Just a few days after his arrival in France, Fortuné de Mazenod installed himself in the house of the Missionaries of Provence, at Aix. Where he dwelled for more then five years. Thanks to the correspondence 1, where we have drawn the previous article we can penetrate in the intimacy of a man who owes a great deal to his nephew Eugene, but from whom in return, the latter has much received. The matter of concern was much more then simple family ties. We are faced before a fabric of complex social, political and religious situation by which we have not yet finished identifying all the elements. We resolutely place ourselves in Fortuné’s point of view, as we pause to consider the way he has adapted to his new life, to his preoccupations for his brothers, to his financial problems, to his involvement in his political and religious ideas. We are reckoning on a comeback of Eugene’s portrait to bring out the exchanges between the uncle and the father of the future saint.

866-241-2762 USA toll-free Fall 2012 CATALOG 160 A Brief History of Catholic Books Dear Friends of PCP, Twenty years ago it was said that 98% of the world’s books were out of print. In the last two decades – with the development of books-on- demand technology, and with the equivalent of whole libraries being posted on the Internet – many books that were once difficult to find can now be located very easily. While we consider the significance of such technological developments, our Catholic Faith prompts us to remember that when God became man, not even the printing press existed. Our Lord Himself never wrote a book, but instead He left it to His Church to give us the various books of the New Testament. There was a reason why Our Lord did not write, and that reason was explained in detail by St. Thomas Aquinas in the thirteenth century. As shown in our “ebook” The Thirteenth: Greatest of Centuries, St. Thomas, although he lived before the development of modern technology, was nevertheless a part of that age which laid the foundations for modern scientific and technological developments. St. Thomas explained that Our Lord Himself, because He was the greatest of all teachers, used the spoken rather than the written word Continued on Page 5 Preserving Christian Publications Offers A Unique List of Catholic Books Used and Out-of-print Titles: 6,226 Pages 4-31 (692 Titles) Website (5,532 titles) New Books- Books in Print 4 2 Page 2-3 Electronic Books - eBooks: 7 Page 17 CONTENT GUIDE ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS ...................................................................30
