PCP New and Used Book Catalog 866-241-2762 USA toll-free Fall 2012 CATALOG 160 A Brief History of Catholic Books Dear Friends of PCP, Twenty years ago it was said that 98% of the world’s books were out of print. In the last two decades – with the development of books-on- demand technology, and with the equivalent of whole libraries being posted on the Internet – many books that were once difficult to find can now be located very easily. While we consider the significance of such technological developments, our Catholic Faith prompts us to remember that when God became man, not even the printing press existed. Our Lord Himself never wrote a book, but instead He left it to His Church to give us the various books of the New Testament. There was a reason why Our Lord did not write, and that reason was explained in detail by St. Thomas Aquinas in the thirteenth century. As shown in our “ebook” The Thirteenth: Greatest of Centuries, St. Thomas, although he lived before the development of modern technology, was nevertheless a part of that age which laid the foundations for modern scientific and technological developments. St. Thomas explained that Our Lord Himself, because He was the greatest of all teachers, used the spoken rather than the written word Continued on Page 5 Preserving Christian Publications Offers A Unique List of Catholic Books Used and Out-of-print Titles: 6,226 Pages 4-31 (692 Titles) Website (5,532 titles) New Books- Books in Print 4 2 Page 2-3 Electronic Books - eBooks: 7 Page 17 CONTENT GUIDE ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS ...................................................................30 MISCELLANEOUS/PERIODICALS / Catholic Geography & Shrines / Foreign Missions / History & Social Science..................................30 APOLOGETICS & CONVERTS ........................................................13 MORAL & PASTORAL THEO./MARRIAGE & FAMILY .............14 Brownson, DeWohl, Faber, Garrigou-Lagrange, Gilson, Keyes, Knox, Manning ................................................................................................29 ORDERING INFORMATION ............................................. 16 CATECHETICS & TEXTBOOKS / YOUTH / Textbooks / OUR LADY / Life of Our Lady / Marian Miracles, Shrines & Catechisms / Education / Children’s Literature ................................24 Apparitions .............................................................................................. 4 CATHOLIC BIOGRAPHY ................................................................... 7 OUR LORD / Life of Our Lord............................................................. 4 CATHOLIC LITERATURE ................................................................25 PAPAL TEACHING / CANON LAW ...............................................21 CHURCH HISTORY & CHRISTIAN CIVILIZATION .................10 PHILOSOPHY / Logic / Ethics / Psychology ..................................12 DOGMATIC THEOLOGY .................................................................13 PRAYER / MED. / Prayer Books / Dev. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA AUTOR: ANDREW BOBOLA GARCIA, S.J. VISTO BUENO DEL DIRECTOR ,/ Prof. Dr. D. JOSE GARCIA DE CASTRO 'VALDES, S.J. Fdo. Madrid - Diciembre 201 INTRODUCTION Tears and compunction and the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola Within the context of the classic, month-long Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, the exercises of the First Week constitute a certain sine qua non of fully and deeply experiencing the whole of the Spiritual Exercises. The exercises of the First Week, through the Principal and Foundation, the examinations of conscience (both the particular and general), the invitation to the sacrament of confession and frequent communion, lay down the basic ground work for the conversion experience. They instill in the exercitant1 the important disposition and attitude for continual conversion – a disposition that incisively opens the exercitant up to all the subsequent exercises in an unparalleled way. As such, it is crucial that the exercitant be carefully and completely exposed to all of the dynamics of the meditations of the exercises found within the First Week. Clearly, the central part of the structure of the exercises contained within the First Week hinges upon the meditations on sin and all of its implications and repercussions: from the vile reality of sin and personal sin to the real possibility of damnation and the great gift of salvation wrought by Christ.
