To the best of my knowledge, as a Hresult of talking with Beth and other board members in residence, all is well within the Lake Highlander Community. The fencing project is now complete and Beth is hearing nothing but rave reviews. The company, Superior Fencing and Rail, worked efficiently and did an excellent installation. They guarantee their work so we should be good to go for quite some time. Beth has also stated the entrance wall along CR1 will be painted providing an overall new and beautiful appearance. A special thank you is extended from the board and Beth to Jean St Laurent for the giving of his time and effort as fencing project manager. Some changes will be occurring around the lake this summer. A decision has been made to replace the current benches, and instead of swings, gliders will be installed which are a safer option for a 55+ community. Sitting on a glider still provides the opportunity for a back and forth motion, which some residents like doing as they enjoy the view of our beautiful lake. The benches and gliders are made of poly-wood which means it does not crack, peel, chip, fade, splinter. The pair of decoy swans, which Bob Frazier graciously purchased in memory of his wife look great from pictures I have viewed. Though it’s not quite the same as seeing Chipper and Dipper, it does provide a good memory of them while enhancing the look of the lake. We are very grateful for Bob’s generosity. Ten palm trees have been purchased and will be planted. New globes for the lights on the pool wall will be installed and now LED blubs will be used. Some of the pool lounge chairs and regular chairs in need of new strapping with now be red and yellow in color to better coordinate with the umbrellas. All of these changes certainly enhance Lake Highlander and we are so fortunate to be part of a community that understand the importance of keeping our home in excellent condition. Thank you to everyone who has worked to make these things happen and for the support of the community to those efforts.

There has been some confusion on that so let me make that clear. I was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and am the Fsecond of four children. My life was not very exciting until Steve Schultz entered the picture my second year of college. We both were attending Grand Rapids Junior College at the time. We dated for 2 ½ years and most of that time we were at separate universities. I went on to Michigan State University where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education. Steve finished his Bachelor’s at the University of Michigan – Dearborn.

Steve and I were married in 1971 and during our marriage have lived in the Michigan cities of Dearborn, Westland, and Canton Township. In 1981 we moved to Independence, Missouri. I was a stay-at-home mom for several years but in 1987 I began working for the Mid-Continent Public Library system which has 31 library branches in three counties in Missouri. After working there for several years, I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in library science. My goal was to finish before I was 50. I attained that goal with a couple of months to spare. I became the manager of the Midwest Genealogy Center, one of the library system’s 31 branches. I retired from the library in 2013.

Steve and I have two sons who are both married. We have six grandchildren ranging in ages of 3 to 18. We look forward to seeing them whenever possible, even if it is only on Skype.

We are full-time residents of Lake Highlander and enjoy our community very much. I look forward to sharing with you through the Piper.

TRAVELOGUE – COSTA RICA Submitted by Roger T. Knisley y wife and I recently traveled to Costa Rica to participate in a “Natural Paradise Tour” Mto observe exotic birds, animals, flowers, and trees in the tropical forests there. We traveled in a large, modern, air-conditioned tour bus with about forty other American and Canadian tourists. We spent many hours traveling on very narrow, winding, mountainous and rural roads. During our daily tours we noticed many people living in one-room shacks with rusty sheet-metal roofs with many kinds of make-shift building materials that had been scavenged to build the dwellings. The shacks had dirt floors but no running water or electricity. I quickly came to understand the true meaning of the term “dirt poor.” I felt sorry for these people who lived in such horrible, miserable conditions, but kept telling myself that it was not my fault. However, this did not help ease the guilty feeling I had of having so much while they had so little. Continued on page 10 LAKE HIGHLANDER PIPER JUNE, 2018 N 9 During one of the trips the tour director announced that there was a man up ahead selling coconut milk and she wanted to know if anyone was interested in purchasing any. Several people indicated an interest, so the bus stopped by the side of the road. Outside at the rear of the bus stood an elderly gentleman, probably in his sixties, who had built a very nice wooden roadside stand which had a roof that protected him from the hot Costa Rican sun. He was wearing an old shabby dress shirt and a dark, worn-out man’s suit. To my astonishment, he was wearing an old pair of men’s dress shoes that had a spit-polish shine that would have passed any U. S. Marine Corps drill sergeant’s inspection. With his machete, the man had cut the coconuts into balls about the size of a softball. He cut a small hole in the top of each coconut and inserted a straw in each for drinking fresh coconut milk. The tour director and the bus driver got off the bus and shuffled back and forth between the bus and the coconut stand delivering coconut milk to the passengers who had requested it. Outside to the front of the bus was a very handsome teenage boy, probably about fifteen or sixteen-years old, sitting on an old wooden crate under the shade of a large tree. He was wearing a shabby, white, cotton shirt, and trousers which were held up by a small piece of rope. He was wearing some sort of homemade sandals on his feet. He was selling overly ripe bananas which were lying on the ground around him. In front of him was a Styrofoam cooler with an unknown product inside. While our tour director and bus driver were delivering coconut milk to the passengers, the young boy never took his eyes off them. I could tell he was hoping and praying that they would come and buy something from him. But they never gave the boy a glance. It was as if he wasn’t there. As the tour director was getting back on the bus she suddenly turned around and walked over to the young boy. “What’s in the cooler?” she asked. “Lychee nuts, ma’am,” he replied. He reached into the cooler and pulled out a clear plastic bag containing about twenty lychee nuts. “How much are they?” she asked. “Four dollars a bag, ma’am,” he replied. She bought one bag and took it back to the bus. She passed the bag around to the passengers, so they could see and taste the nuts. She then returned to the young boy and bought two more bags for herself. I don’t think any of the other passengers noticed the tour director’s transaction with the boy. But this was a very magical, and some might say, spiritual, moment for me. Suddenly, uncontrollable tears came to my eyes. Most young boys would have run to the tour director and begged and pleaded for her to buy something from them. Not this young boy; he just sat there, quietly and patiently with great pride and dignity, hoping and praying that something good would happen to him. Lo and behold, it did. I wanted to jump off the bus and give that beautiful young boy a great big hug. But, of course, I couldn’t do that as the rest of the passengers would say what a crazy, sentimental, old fool I was. Instead, I pounded on the bus window to the get the young boy’s attention. He finally noticed me, and I gave him a great big wave. He waved back and gave me the most wonderful smile that you can imagine. He was so happy and proud that he had made such a big sale. I am sure that he gave the money to his parents to buy food and clothing for the family. I truly love that beautiful, young Costa Rican lychee nut boy.

LAKE HIGHLANDER PIPER JUNE, 2018 N 13 The Swans Are Aswimming Again Submitted by Bob Frazier hipper and Dipper left us a couple of years ago, but the clones of these majestic birds are back in Lake Highlander again. Actually, they are swan decoys. but from a distance Cwho can tell the difference? I bought them from “The Pond Guy” and his advertisement says they will scare off geese. But look at one of the pictures below and you will see a bird sitting right on one of the swans. Bill and Michael launched their mighty boat and anchored them in about 20 feet of water. They look good now but let see if they can make it ‘til their first birthday. I bought the swans in memory of my lovely wife, Millie. The name of the two swans will be “C2” and “D2”. The one looking down is named after Chipper, so he is “C2”.

Bob Frazier with C2 and D2 Bill and Michael anchoring the swan decoys in the water

C2 (looking down) and D2 If you look closely, you can see an anhinga (snakebird) on a decoy swan

LAKE HIGHLANDER PIPER JUNE, 2018 N 23 IN MEMORY OF FLAG DAY lag day in the United States is June 14 and commemorates the adoption of American flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. President Woodrow Wilson made Fa proclamation in 1906 establishing June 14 as Flag Day. Judy Walling shared this information: At every Purdue University home football game this tribute, written by John Hultman, is read: “I am an American. That’s the way most of us put it, just matter of factly. They are plain words, those four; you could write them on your thumbnail, or sweep them across this bright autumn sky. But remember too, that they are more than just words. They are a way of life. So whenever you speak them, speak them proudly, speak them gratefully, “I am an American.” You’re A Grand Old Flag – by George M. Cohen, 1906 You're a grand old flag, You're a high-flying flag And forever in peace may you wave You're the emblem of the land I love The home of the free and the brave Ev'ry heart beats true under red, white and blue Where there's never a boast or brag But should old acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag

26 LAKE HIGHLANDER PIPER JUNE, 2018 N FATHER’S DAY, JUNE17 he idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced in the United States by Sonora Smart Dodd. She was inspired by the American Mother’s Day Tcelebrations to plan a day to honor fathers. Father’s Day has been celebration in the U. S. each June since 1910. What Makes A Dad Author unknown God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of the quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagles’ flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of family need, Then God combined these qualities. When there was nothing more to add, He knew his masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it . . . DAD.

32 LAKE HIGHLANDER PIPER JUNE, 2018 N LAFF CORNER Submitted by Mr. Sunshine, Al Szynski Joke #1 – The Displeased Father A dad grew increasingly displeased as his teenage daughter and her boyfriend studied in her room late one evening. Finally losing his patience, he knocked sharply on her door. Her boyfriend immediately opened it and asked if something was wrong. "I have to ask you to move your car," the father exclaimed. "Oh, sure. Is it in someone's way?" "No," the dad replied, "it's at the wrong address."

Joke #2 – Special Delivery It was 6 p.m., and I was about to leave the coin laundry where I was employed. My boss called me over and asked if I would mind dropping off someone’s laundry on my way home. “It’s for my cousin,” she apologized, “who’s eight months pregnant and can’t get out much anymore.” I cheerfully agreed and, driving to the address, knocked at the door. A little girl, the sister-to-be, answered. “Hi there,” I said with a big smile, “Is your mommy home?” Holding up the white bundle of clothes, I explained, “I have a delivery for her.” The child’s mouth dropped, and her eyes went wide. “Mom!” she shrieked, “Come quick! It’s the stork!”

Joke #3 – So Few Hairs Little Johnny was eating breakfast one morning and got to thinking about things. “Mommy, why has daddy got so few hairs on his head?” Feeling pleased with herself for coming up with a good answer to her husband’s baldness, the mother replied, “He thinks a lot.” After a few moments Johnny asked, “So why do you have so much hair?”

A POINT TO PONDER Submitted by Steven Schultz n ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants Iand courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the other side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand: Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition!
