  • A Threat to the German-Brazilian Identity Empire in Porto Alegre's
Grêmio de Regatas Almirante Tamandaré: a threat to the German-Brazilian identity empire in Porto Alegre’s rowing scene Carolina Fernandes da Silva* Ester Liberato Pereira** Janice Zarpellon Mazo*** Abstract: The foundation of the Grêmio de Regatas Almirante Tamandaré threatened the hegemony of rowing associations with German-Brazilian cultural identities in Porto Alegre, Brazil. This association was founded by Portuguese-Brazilians who sought to build new identity representations around that sport, changing the city’s rowing landscape. Grêmio de Regatas Almirante Tamandaré triggered a new era for sports in Porto Alegre. In addition to gaining more space in the press, it consolidated an association that approached a Brazilian cultural identity in Porto Alegre sports scene, thus providing an opportunity for identity disputes in the rowing associations’ scene. Keywords: Rowing. History of Sport. Henrique Luiz Roessler, a tax agent for hunting and fishing as well as a descendant of German immigrants, started repressing the “passarinhada”, a name used either for the hunting of wild birds or a gastronomic ritual. Roessler was sued by the hunters and became the target of a defamatory campaign by Italian immigrants and their descendants, who were the main practitioners of bird hunting. • Europeanpresence in the Brazilian Poultry Farming a Presença Europeia Na Avicultura Brasileira
The Europeanpresence in the Brazilian poultry farming A presença europeia na avicultura brasileira message mensagem razilian poultry farming stands out for its massive presence in the B country’s southern states, which gives it a clear European feature. After all, the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Parana and Santa Catarina, with a climate and vegetation resembling those of the Old Continent, are where European immigrants from different nationalities have disembarked over the last centuries. Italians, Germans and Poles, among others, have settled with poultry farming. They were joined, naturally, by descendents of the first Portuguese to arrive in our country after its Discovery, in 1500. Today, common names from multiple European regions are present in the production and export of the chicken meat served at the tables of families where their ancestors are certainly found. It’s not by chance that Brazil is today the main supplier among the countries that export this product to the European Union. This historic and fraternal bond between Europe and Brazil deserves to last forever, free of barriers – for the happiness of generations at the Old and New Worlds. • Post-Wwii Italian Emigrants and Transnational Training
GET SKILLED AND GET OUT: POST-WWII ITALIAN EMIGRANTS AND TRANSNATIONAL TRAINING By Laura Cuppone A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History—Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT GET SKILLED AND GET OUT: POST-WWII ITALIAN EMIGRANTS AND TRANSNATIONAL TRAINING By Laura Cuppone Increasingly after WWII, both traditional and new destination countries for Italian immigrants maintained the sponsorship system and imposed skill-based selection criteria. In the United States and Canada demands for skilled workers replaced pre-WWII ethnic-based criteria. To prevent labor shortages, the developed Western European countries requested immigrants skilled in specific trades. After twenty years of restrictive fascist migratory policies, the fledgling Italian Republic not only resuscitated its support for emigration but also made it the centerpiece of postwar reconstruction. In the eyes of Italian authorities, emigration became a way to relieve unemployment and bolster the lagging economy through emigrants' remittances. Grounded in an analysis of Italian state and provincial archival sources, oral interviews, and emigration conference proceedings, this dissertation examines the reactions of Italian state authorities, migration experts, and Italian emigrants to the demands for skilled workers. In doing so, it adopts the emigrant country's point of view and explores the formal and informal training Italian emigrants obtained before and/or after their departure. Whereas the previous literature has focused on the receiving countries and their migration policies, this dissertation focuses on the reactions to them and the variety of skill development Italian emigrants went through. To capture the full range of emigrants' vocational training experiences, this dissertation situates postwar Italian migration in international, national, and local contexts.

  • Rial, Carmen. “Circulation, Bubbles, Returns: the Mobility of Brazilians in the Football System”
Rial, Carmen. “Circulation, Bubbles, Returns: The Mobility of Brazilians in the Football System”. In Richard Elliot e John Harris (org) Football and Migration. London and New York, 2015: 61-75. This chapter deals with the transnational circulation of Brazilian football players, many of whom are celebrities, and their lifestyle abroad, which is characterised by the experience of life in an institutional bubble, which serves to keep them away from local cultural contexts. The ethnographic study was conducted in more than 15 countries. It concludes that the permeability of the bubble varies according to an athlete’s age, original social class, the ranking of his or her club in the football system, and the time of their stay abroad. As studies of other transmigrants have found, the experience abroad led many of the footballers to have a sharper political awareness. Football today ‘is an economically significant, highly popular, globally networked cultural form’ (Smart 2007: 114), it is an integral part of consumer culture and is focused on celebrities. The global expansion of football is linked to growing interest by the media in the sport and to the development of media technologies, such as satellite TV and the Internet. Football games are the world’s most widely watched events. This mediascape hegemony (Appadurai, 1990) fosters a global circulation of people and money, in which Brazil is one of the top protagonists, given its football dominance in recent decades. Brazil is the only country with five football World Cup titles, the only one that took part in every World Cup, the country that has led the FIFA ranking for the longest time in recent decades, and whose athletes have received the most FIFA best-player awards (men and women).
