Saltwater Lake A lagoon about 4km SW of Point Plomer in Limeburners Creek Gazetted: 6 Apr 1973 Nature Reserve - Limeburners Creek originates there. Sancrox A locality on the Hastings River about 12km W of the town of Gazetted: 16 Apr 1993 Port Macquarie. Initial surveys of the land around Port Macquarie were commenced in 1830 with a view to opening up the area to free settlers. The starting point was the SW corner of a township named Hay (named after Under-secretary Robert William Hay). There was a plan for this town, including streets, but it never eventuated. The area was known as Haytown or Haytown Reserve for many generations. There was a timber mill in the area at the end of the 1800s owned by Johnston and Cain and also a wharf and a punt across the Hastings to Rawdon Island. The area was in the beginning variously called St Croix, St Rocks or San Roch (meaning sucken rock) a site of a government farm run by a Frenchman. The name Sancrox has survived all others (possibly as a misuse of the word Sait Roche), having been so gazetted when the mill workers cottages stood there. Sancrox Reserve A reserve beside the Hastings River at Sancrox, about 12km W Gazetted: 4 Dec 1987 of Port Macquarie. Sandhurst Reserve A reserve. Origin: Sandhurst Reserve is the popular choice of Gazetted: 22 Dec 2000 name by surrounding residents. Sandy Flat Old name for the area around the present (1990s) industrial area. Thomas Platt had his vineyard there in 1875 Fernhill. Sandy Point A point in the Hastings River about 3.5km SW of the locality of Gazetted: 26 Jun 1973 Sancrox and 3km W of Croppys Hill. In the “History of The Hastings” by G.A. Johnson “Rawdon Island across the river on Sandy Point was Josiah Secombe” 60 acres near Ennis (Isaac Andrews.) Property on the northern side of the Hastings River just south of Narrowgut in the Hursley area - also the name of the area. Santos Farm in the Maria River State Forest area in the Parish of Tinebank. Sandys Station on the Telegraph Point-Rollands Plains Road NE of Mt. Cairncross. Sapling Creek A watercourse about 4km long. It rises about 2km S of Cowarra Gazetted: 6 May 1973 State Forest and flows into Cowarra Creek. So named because the crossing was of soft earth and had to be lined with saplings. Once known as Ten Mile Creek as it was considered 16.1km W of town. (See PMN, 12 Apr 1902, p.3). Sarahs Creek A stream rising about 16km WSW of Transit Hill. It flows from Gazetted: 6 Apr 1973 Cowarra Forest, generally N for about 5.5km into Hastings River. Named after Sarah Allman [wife of Captain Allman] and her first child. See also Sarahs Creek Bridge Sarahs Creek Bridge A bridge erected in 1886 purportedly named after Sarah Suters. Sarahs Crescent Runs south and east off King Creek Road east of King Creek. Sarsaparilla Creek Name of a mine at The Cells 1901. Savilles Creek A partly perennial stream rising about 4km NW of the village of Gazetted: 23 Feb 1973 Hannam Vale. It flows generally E and NNE for about 8km into the Camden Haven River, 1km SE of Lorne. Previous name Saddles Creek. Sawyer Creek A partly perennial stream rising about 1.25km WNW of Innes Trig Gazetted: 14 Feb 1969 Station. It flows generally north for about 3.2km into Long Creek. Sawyers Creek A non-perennial stream that originates in the Mt. Boss State Gazetted: 10 Jan 1969 Forest, rising about 3km W of Forbes Trig Station. It flows generally south west for about 5.5km into the Forbes River about 20km N of Yarras. Schoolhouse Ridge Steep bank overlooking Forbes River. Was also known as King Cutting. (See HSG, 17 Jan 1980, p.4). Scotts Plains Station 4km NE of Rollands Plains E of the Wilson River. Scotts Plains Road E of the Wilson River near Rollands Plains - runs into Smith Creek Road. Scrubby Creek Station 5km NW of Lower Pappinbarra on the south side of Pappinbarra Road. 1km E of Hollisdale. Sea Acres A rainforest environment centre and national park at Shelley Beach Port Macquarie. Originally known as Sea Acres Sanctuary it was opened in 1959 on leased Crown Land and the project was conceived by Alan and Joan Martin. Sea Acres is currently the home of the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Seaview (1) A minor trig station on Mount Seaview about 11.6 km south Gazetted: 10 Jan 1969 east of Brassey trig. station and about 12.8km NE of the locality of Myrtle Scrub. (2) Home of Phillip Absalom at Tacking Point 16 Mar 1901. (3) Home of A. J. Gibbons of Laurieton (SEE PMN, 13 Jun 1914). Seaview Avenue Dicks Hill, Port Macquarie. So named because of the view of the sea. Seaview Downs Station in the Cooperabung area 4km N of Telegraph point west of the old Pacific Highway. Seaview Mount Name given by John Oxley to Mt. Seaview. Seaview Road In the Yarrowitch area - goes north from the Oxley Highway near Enfield State Forest. Second Avenue Bonny Hills. The second avenue created in Bonny Hills. Servington Property of R.W. Wilson (see PMN, 24 Apr 1923). Rollands Plains - opposite “Eugowra”. Roger Williamson Wilson there in 1910. See Wilson Family History. Roy and Maude Wilson. (see PMN, 5 Jun 1926) Servington Originally the area suggested by Governor Macquarie as the site Settlement Farm for the convict farm - Capt. Steele of the NSW Mounted Police first bought it after free settlement was allowed at Port Macquarie. The later name of Allmans Plains. Settlement Point A point on Hastings River just off the Northern tip of Pelican Gazetted: 29 Jun 1973 Island. It is about 4km NW by N of Port Macquarie. Origins: Captain Charles Steele of the NSW Mounted Police purchased this land about 1845 and named it “Settlement Point Farm”: Sometimes referred to as New Town. Settlement Point Port Macquarie. Named after Settlement Point Farm, purchased Road about 1845 and named by Captain Charles Steele of the NSW Mounted Police. Settlers Arms The second hotel or tavern in Port Macquarie. Licensed to Charles Farrell 19 Sep 1830 - on the south side of Clarence Street between Horton and Hay Streets. Sevington see Servington. Shalimar Retirement Village on the shores of Queens Lake. Shallow Bay A dairy farm on the banks of the Hastings River 4.8km from Port Macquarie 226 acres. Shangri-La Alderman R.S.Stanfield’s home at Hinbbard, Port Macquarie (see PMN, 26 Nov 1948, p.5). Base for Dulhunty’s Air Service Dec 1949. Shantill Station 3km S of Rollands Plains opposite Clairview. Sheep Station A minor trig station about 4.8km SE of Tobin Trig Station, and Gazetted: 14 Feb 1969 about 2.2km SW of Ralfes Peak Trig Station. Shelbourne Place Port Macquarie. Named after the ketch “Shelbourne.” Shelly Beach (1) A beach situated between Miners Beach and Nobby Head. It Gazetted: 6 Apr 1973 is about 2.5km SE by S of the town of Port Macquarie. Origin of name unknown however many beaches in Australia are named Shelly Beach for obvious reasons. (2) Beach at Bonny Hills. Sherwood Station in the Yarrowitch area just N of the Oxley Highway W of Kempsey near Enfield State Forest. Ship Inn House on the Maria River belonging to James Thompson. Shirldon Station between Telegraph Point and Ballengarra on the south side of the Wilson River near Avenel. Shoal Arm Creek Early name for Kooloonbung Creek. (see A History of Port Macquarie, p.32). Shoal Creek Early name for Wrights Creek Port Macquarie. Short Street (1) Port Macquarie. Initially this was a very short street, just off Clarence Street, until the reclamation of the Kooloonbung Creek area in 1975-8 allowed for its extension. (2) Laurieton. Originally known as Queen St. (3) Bonny Hills. Named due to the short length of the street. Signal Hill Early name for Mt. Comboyne. Silo Road Runs west off Old Coast Road 8km W of Kundabung. Silverdell Property of Adam Johnston at Rollands Plains 1899. Simmons Corner Beechwood. A sheriff’s sale held there (see PMN, 3 Mar 1894). Sister City Park A reserve notified in 1983. Located in High Street, near to the Gazetted: 4 Dec 1987 junction with Campbell Street, Wauchope. Origin: Renamed in 1966 to commemorate the relationship between Wauchope and Canisteo in the U.S.A. Also known as Canisteo Park. Previous name Rotary Park. Six-B The name derived from the initials of the names Broken Bago Flora Reserve Big fruited Blackbutt Biotype Bush. Gazetted: 3 Dec 1999 Sixty Acres A property on the Wilson River - James Hinder was there on the 1869/70 Electoral Roll. Mr H J Halliday lived there approx 1871 when he married. The name of the property was changed to Lambfield (see PMN, 16 Sept 1922, p.4). Later the property of John Campbell (see PMN, 15 Mar 1913). Slade Crescent Port Macquarie. Named after W.A.H.Slade, an early landowner. Slieve Donard House of McMaster, William St Port Macquarie. 1893 - (see PMN, 25 Nov 1893). Slieve Donard is a mountain in Ireland and also the name of a ship that traded along the NSW coast in the late 1800s Smith Bridge The small bridge over a culvert in Lord St.
