NOT THIS TIME OFFSPRING 15 MONTHS IN THE MAKING, MORE RESTRICTIVE WHIP RULES FINALLY PASS IN ON TOP AGAIN AT OBS CALIFORNIA by T. D. Thornton After initially being deadlocked on a Thursday vote to put off implementing anti-whipping regulations that have been repeatedly delayed since first proposed in March 2019, the California Board (CHRB) finally voted 4-2 to pass a rule that will prohibit a from striking a mount more than six times during a race, and then only in an underhanded position with no more than two strikes in succession using whips that must meet new CHRB standards to soften the blows. Representatives from the Jockeys' Guild, plus California riders Mike Smith and Aaron Gryder, repeatedly advocated for the board to wait at least one more month before voting on the rule to allow more time for a proposed national whip standards rule to come to fruition. OBS Spring Sale cont. from p1 Over the first three days of selling, 452 juveniles have sold for $39,550,000 with an average of $87,500 and a median of $50,000. At the conclusion of the third session last term, 519 2- year-olds had summoned $56,217,000 for an average of $108,318 and a median of $65,000. Bloodstock agent Steve Young has signed the ticket on four juveniles thus far, including two colts Thursday. He said that bidding was still competitive on the top horses. AI think there is a lot of competition for the good-looking, quick horses with good mechanics that pass the vet,@ said Young. AI think that for the horses that are perceived to be a tick under that, it gets dicey. It is the same way it=s been for a while. It doesn=t mean the non-elite horses aren=t good horses. I think when you like a horse and go up to to buy it, there is someone up there waiting for you.@ Tonja Terranova, wife of New York-based trainer John Terranova, made just one purchase, but made it count, going to $425,000 for a son of Quality Road (Hip 628). She expressed similar sentiments to other buyers earlier in the week about the lack of a middle market. AThe good horses have brought money,@ Terranova said. AThe middle market is a little bit weaker right now, but you still have to pay for the good horses. I think overall there are a lot of nice horses. You have to step up to get the good ones.@ The final session of the four-day OBS Spring Sale is Friday, starting at 10 a.m.

IF WE OPEN IT, WILL THEY COME?

Michelle Dunn photo by Diana Pikulski The scope and pace of how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected daily life, the national economy, and by extension, the Thoroughbred racing business, is dizzying. For so many, the hardest aspect of the pandemic-induced crisis is the uncertainty about if and when things will go back to the old normal. The pandemic is like nothing we have experienced before and therefore, we have no models on which to rely. With the delayed opening of most racetracks, and with others having no opening day in sight, many people are asking if owners and trainers who are struggling financially are able to maintain horses that are not earning money. A May 1 article in The Boston Globe ran with the headline, "Closed racetracks are leaving many Thoroughbreds with nowhere to go." This raised the concern of board members at the Secretariat Center, which is located in the Kentucky Horse Park. They chose to take action and be prepared with a positive response to the question of whether racehorses in need would have a place to go if their owners could not afford to care for them. The We Are Here Initiative is a partnership between the Secretariat Center and the Kentucky Horse Park. The newly formed non-profit is accepting racehorses whose future careers in racing are not viable due to circumstances brought on or hastened by the TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 16 OF 19 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • JUNE 12, 2020

GUINEAS BREEZE-UP CATALOGUE ONLINE O=BRIEN TARGETS IRISH The catalogue for the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale on July 8 is online, numbering 157 juveniles. The breeze will take GUINEAS DOZEN place on the Rowley Mile on July 6 at 9 a.m. Graduates of the sale will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Far Above (Ire) (Farhh {GB}), the winner of last weekend=s G3 Palace House S. and one of 49 stakes winners produced by the sale since 2015. Two-year-olds are catalogued by leading sires like Dark Angel (Ire), Kodiac (GB), Night Of Thunder, No Nay Never, Sea The Stars (Ire) and Showcasing while Kitten=s Joy, sire of last weekend=s G1 2000 Guineas victor Kameko, has one colt catalogued. First crop sires represented include Belardo (Ire), Shalaa (Ire), Territories (Ire), Twilight Son (GB), Adaay (GB), Estidhkaar (GB), Mehmas (Ire) and Prince of Lir (Ire). AGuineas Breeze Up graduates have excelled since the resumption of racing with recent G3 Palace House S. winner Far Above showcasing the quality and value for money that buyers have come to expect from the sale,@ said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. AThis year=s catalogue features a strong Aidan O=Brien looks for a 12th win in the selection of quality 2-year-olds that we are confident will appeal Irish 2000 Guineas | Racing Post to buyers in all sectors of the market.@

While Khalid Abdullah=s unbeaten Siskin (First Defence) is the current favourite for Friday evening=s i250,000 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh, the G2 Railway S. and G1 Phoenix S. winner is far from the certainty that Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) appeared to be at Newmarket six days earlier and even that champion met with reversal at crunch-time. Connections will be hoping that the forecast rain does not make a major difference to the current fast conditions and the homebred enters his Classic test showing all the right signals. His biggest issue is probably the strong opposition, with a deeper field bringing about a more open renewal than is sometimes the case including a six-strong battalion from a Ballydoyle stable that is off to a flyer in 2020. With a record 11 wins in this since Desert King (Ire) ( Dancer {Ire}) opened the scoring in 1997, Aidan O=Brien bows to Photo courtesy Tattersalls no-one and it is hard to argue that any of his representatives can be safely ruled out of this edition. O=Brien Targets Irish Guineas Dozen cont. from p1 Successful in the G1 1000 Guineas and very nearly so in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket--with what was viewed in the latter as the stable=s second-string--the operation could easily be celebrating yet another of their fabled whitewashes in an Irish Classic we have become so used to witnessing down the years. On official ratings, there is only five pounds between the five who stepped outside of maiden company in 2019 with >TDN Rising Star= Monarch of Egypt (American Pharoah) topping them courtesy of his second in the G1 Phoenix S. Intriguingly, Seamie Heffernan who has yet to win this particular race has sided with another >TDN Rising Star= in Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who came up short behind Pinatubo on two occasions last term before winning the six-furlong G3 Round Tower S. here in August. Only sixth in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket when last seen in October, the bay could be ready for a step up to a mile and will probably appreciate easy ground more than some of his stablemates if the rain sets in.

AWe have had our eye on this race for him for a long time. Lope Y Fernandez won the Round Tower over six furlongs, so he is going into unknown territory with regards to the trip but we have been happy with his work and he also seems to be in good form. Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a lovely horse. This is only his third run, but we are looking forward to seeing what he is going to do. We=ve always thought he was a very nice colt.@ ARoyal Lytham (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) can race a little lazily, Monarch Of Egypt | Racing Post which is why we are fitting him with blinkers, but he has never run beyond six furlongs. He won the July S. over that trip and With three defeats after his success in the seven-furlong G3 he=s a lovely, relaxed horse so we=ll learn a lot about him. Tyros S. at Leopardstown in July and the G2 Futurity S. here in Monarch of Egypt is a horse we=ve always liked. He worked August, Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has some questions to better than he showed on a racecourse last year, but does have answer. His third placing behind the subsequent G1 Poule some nice pieces of form. GLOBAL APPROACH The duo forms a key plank in the Emirates Park strategy of mixing the strength of its Australian-bred broodmare band with the elite sires of the Northern Hemisphere with a view to racing its best stock in Europe, the United Kingdom and Ireland. "We want to breed to race up there for Emirates Park Principal His Excellency Nasser Lootah," Emirates Park General Manager Bryan Carlson told TDN AusNZ. "All his friends race up there, so we can do that and access those better stallions up there like Frankel and Kingman (GB) and the like. Some of those fillies we may breed up there will come back, but it gives us access to those bloodlines. "The mares we sent overseas this year are going well. Estijaab went to Frankel and she went in foal first time and she is doing very well. Similarly, Shumookh got in foal to Night Of Thunder which was good." A world away from the hustle and bustle of Rosehill on one of Australia's biggest days of racing, Golden Slipper S. winner Estijaab is embarking on her new career at Adrian and Philippa O'Brien's Hazelwood Bloodstock farm at Newmarket. The second most expensive yearling filly by three-time Champion Sire Snitzel, who became that stallion's only Group 1 winning 2-year-old daughter, Estijaab would be among the most valuable first-season broodmares in the country, had she remained in Australia. But her owners Emirates Park, who paid $1.7 million for her at the 2017 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, opted to send Estijaab to the United Kingdom in January to be mated with the legendary Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and become the latest member of its Estijaab and Frankel | Juddmonte Farms photo elite Northern Hemisphere broodmare band, which is based with Hazelwood.
