Master of Music (Music Education), August, 1987, 98 pp., 4 tables, 6 figures, bibliography, 74 titles. The present study explored whether musicians could (1) differentiate among the timbres of bass tubas of a single design, but constructed of different materials, (2) determine differences within certain ranges and articulations, and (3) possess different perceptual abilities depending on previous experience in low brass performance. Findings indicated that (1) tubas made to the same specifications and constructed of the same material differed as much as those of made to the same specifications, constructed of different materials; 2) significant differences in perceptibility which occurred among tubas were inconsistent across ranges and articulations, and differed due to phrase type and the specific tuba on which the phrase was played; 3) low brass players did not differ from other auditors in their perception of timbral differences. Living 'This is what broken sounds like': 800 Philly school instruments awaiting repair to be used for symphony Updated: FEBRUARY 1, 2017 — 3:01 AM EST CLEM MURRAY/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Connor Przybyszewski, 28, a Drexel grad and a professional musician living in West Philly, tries out a trombone in Temple Contemporary, at Tyler School of Art as part of the Symphony for a Broken Orchestra exhibit. by Samantha Melamed, STAFF WRITER | @samanthamelamed | [email protected] As a small corps of musicians arrived on a recent morning, Jeremy Thal gathered them into a loose huddle and laid out the day’s mission. “We know what one broken tuba sounds like,” he said. “Now, we’re kind of curious what four broken tubas sound like. So, everyone grab a horn that has a leak -- a sizable leak like this one, that’s missing a valve.” A half-hour later, a quartet was assembled: a French horn, 'This is what broken sounds like': approximately one-and-a-half trombones, and a French 800 Philly school instruments awaiting repair to be used for horn-meets- trumpet Frankenstein they were calling a symphony French hornet. “We’ll do two normal notes, and two notes of weirds,” Thal suggested. Then they played -- a sound that was a little bit Billie Holiday, a little bit pack of feral cats. This sonic strangeness is the result of a ragtag harvest from classrooms and storage spaces across the School District of Philadelphia, where a backlog of broken instruments has piled up since funding was slashed in 2013. Today, there are more than 800 of them out of a total instrument inventory of 10,000.

  • Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron.

  • Bill Wrobel's DVD Collection, Review & Music Analysis
Bill Wrobel’s DVD Collection, Review & Music Analysis A man is often known by the company he keeps. I suppose this applies not only to people routinely around him but also to the specific kinds of music and dvds he purchases as a personal collection to enjoy. As John Burroughs wrote in his poem, Waiting : “My own shall come to me.” This is the law of attraction (like attracts like). Now: Food for the soul to me includes music. Music for most people is obviously a pleasure, refined or not, ridiculous or sublime. Music can calm ones nerves in the stresses of life; reminds you of the heavenly; reminds you of beauty while sometimes involved in the ugliness or drudgery of daily life; helps you feel better when life gets you down, and restores harmony and peace (if only temporarily). I happen to love Golden Age and Silver Age music (music that I grew up with), and of course this includes Romantic era classical music especially (Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Wagner, etc.). As most people who read my site already know, my top favorite film composers are Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner. Then I like Jerry Goldsmith in most cases, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Tiomkin, John Barry, and so forth. So obviously I will buy dvds (and cds) that contain their music. I tend to buy more dvds than cds because the music was intended to be paired with the images on the screen. I enjoy both mediums but music married with film is the best or most effective expression since it was meant for that particular art medium.

Prosthetic Memory and the Novel 32 Conclusion 42 Bibliography 45 Acknowledgements I would like to begin by acknowledging the opportunity I had to use the (online) libraries of both the University of Amsterdam and the University of Illinois at Chicago for my research. But even more importantly, I would like to express my acknowledgement to the professors who contributed the most to this thesis, in various ways. To begin with, George Blaustein: my thesis supervisor and the program coordinator of the master’s program in "History: American Studies" at the UvA. George has often incited my curiosity by always finding a way to link differing topics within American studies and by introducing me to interesting, funny or challenging sources. Primarily by asking (sometimes difficult) questions, George has encouraged me to search for counterarguments and our conversations have offered me the most important guidance in the process of writing and revising this thesis. Additionally, I would like to thank Madhu Dubey for introducing me to Toni Morrison's novels and to critical scholarship, including Dubey's own writings, on Morrison's work. During my global exchange semester at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I took her course "Topics in African American Literature: Toni Morrison".

Toni Morrison: Defamiliarization and Metaphor in Song of Solomon and Beloved Tolli Vegge A Thesis presented to the Department of British and American Studies the University of Oslo in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Cand. Philol. degree Autumn Term 2000 CONTENTS Chapter One: Introduction 3 Chapter Two: Previous Scholarship on Song of Solomon 24 Chapter Three: Defamiliarization and Solomon‟s Song 44 Chapter Four: The Tree as Metaphor in Beloved 91 Chapter Five: Conclusion 112 Works Cited 115 2 CHAPTER ONE Introduction When I started reading Toni Morrison‟s Song of Solomon and began to understand the meaning of music and song in that novel, an idea gradually emerged in my mind. Eight or ten months earlier I had come across the Russian Formalist concept of defamiliarization developed by Viktor Shklovsky and by degrees I saw how well suited this notion was for understanding Morrison‟s novel. The concept represents different ways in which the real world is made strange or unfamiliar in literary fiction by the use of metaphor and many other devices. Toni Morrison‟s writing is full of metaphor and symbolism and while much criticism on Morrison focusses on issues such as blackness, race, gender, feminism, and history, I will focus on the formal literary qualities of her prose and I will use theory on defamiliarization and metaphor as my approach. I will, however, attempt to tie the formal observations to thematic concerns. In this introduction I will explain the concept of defamiliarization and place it in the context of Russian Formalist thinking where it belongs.
