Big Names Throughout Ftknov Catalogue TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2017 BIG NAMES THROUGHOUT DIVERSIFY STEALS GOLD CUP WITH HONEST EFFORT The Week in Review, by T.D. Thornton FTKNOV CATALOGUE You might call it a nice bit of honest thievery that earned Diversify (Bellamy Road) the wire-to-wire win in Saturday=s GI Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park. It was no secret going into the race that this New York-bred >TDN Rising Star= would attempt to seize the lead and wing it on the front end for as far as he could over 10 furlongs. Diversify and jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. executed their part of the plan flawlessly, opening up by three lengths in the initial stages before settling willingly into a rhythmic backstretch run through moderate splits about two lengths ahead of the pack. Furlong after furlong, Diversify=s head-of-affairs tactics were aided by an absence of internal pressure from the perceived main dangers in the JCGC field, most of whom were closers known for firing their best shots in the latter stages. • The Relational Ethics of Church Music
ABSTRACT The Relational Ethics of Church Music Nathan Myrick, Ph.D. Mentor: Monique M. Ingalls, Ph.D. Music is an “indispensable” aspect of Protestant Christian worship, to use Brian Wren’s term (2000, 48). Yet it is also perceived as one of the most divisive aspects of that activity, with scholars, practitioners, and congregants alike contributing to this perspective. As scholars such as Donald Hustad (1993), Harold Best (1993, 2003), J. Nathan Corbitt (1998), Brian Wren (2000), James K. A. Smith (2009), and Jeremy S. Begbie (2011) have similarly noted, music connects people to each other and enlivens our emotional and relational convictions. This reality strongly suggests that music has ethical significance; if music is so emotionally and relationally powerful, and can be a source of unity and division, then it should be examined from within an ethical frame. It is surprising, however, that few scholars of Christian worship have attempted to consider music’s way of being in the world from an ethical perspective. This dissertation argues that a central problem in scholarship on music in Christian worship is that the ethical significance of church music has been sidestepped, ignored, or generally undertheorized. Using a multidisciplinary methodology drawn from ethnomusicological fieldwork at three Waco, Texas, Baptist churches and synthesizing theories of discourse, formation, and care ethics oriented towards restorative justice, I argue that church music is ethical when it preserves people in and restores people to just relationships with each other and, when applied directly to ecclesial settings, relationship with God. The Relational Ethics of Church Music by Nathan Myrick, B.A., M.A.T.

The Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the elusive Triple Crown, is run between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Called “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans,” the Preakness is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on the third Saturday of each May. First run in 1873, the race is competed at a distance of 1 3/16 miles, 1/16 of a mile shorter than the Kentucky Derby, for 3-year-olds on the main dirt track. This year’s edition of the Preakness will be run on Saturday, May 19. After winning the Kentucky Derby and becoming the first horse since Apollo in 1882 to win “The Run for the Roses” while not having raced as a 2-year-old, Justify takes his next step towards a possible Triple Crown in Saturday’s Preakness. It won’t be easy, though, as Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic also makes the journey to Baltimore.
