Help is here! When you break the Germany course down Into its FOUR chunks it makes it seem like a much more manageable task to remember all the facts. This booklet will take you through the first chunk ….1918-1929 This exam paper has 6 questions for you to answer in 1hr 20 minutes with a total of 52 marks available. Question 1 (4marks) This is an inference question where you have to extract 2 supported messages from the source. Example: Give two things you can infer from source A about the reasons for the failure of the Munich Putsch in November 1923? How to answer: One thing I can infer from the source is… A detail in the source that supports this is… Another thing I can infer from the source is…A detail in the source that supports this is… Question 2 (12marks) This is an ‘EXPLAIN WHY’ question. This means you need to analyse key features of historical events. There is usually a time period given or it is about a significant event or person during the years you have studied. You will be given two bullet points in the question to help you and you MUST use at least one reason from your own knowledge. Example: Explain why Germany recovered during the period 1923-1929. How to answer: You need to give at least 3 clear reasons to answer the question (3 PEE paragraphs). This can be 3 own knowledge reasons or a combination of 1 or 2 of the bullet points and own knowledge. You must use detailed own knowledge throughout the question and constantly link back to the question. One reason why is… 2 This was when… This led to… It’s not just about HOW MUCH you revise…. It is also about the level at which your brain processes the information. Completing the tasks in this book will help you to do that by: Organising Analysing Prioritising Explaining Question 3a (8marks) This is a ‘HOW USEFUL’ question. This question asks you to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the sources you are provided with. You need to think about the PROVENANCE of the source and how this makes it strong and weak. You should include details/inferences from the source as well in your answer. Example: How useful are sources A and B for an enquiry into the attitudes of people towards the Hitler Youth? How to answer: Content+Inference: What is the source showing/telling you? ‘In Source A, I can see… This tells me…’ Own knowledge: How does your own validate the source/add context to the source? ‘At the time…’ Provenance: Why is this a strong source? Why is it a weak source? Consider Nature, Origin and Purpose. Your opinion: How useful is the source overall? (remember all sources are useful to some extent) You MUST write a paragraph like this for each source, separately. Question 3b (4marks) This question asks you identify WHAT the main difference between two interpretations is. You need to identify the view of interpretation 1 and support it with a detail from the interpretation, then identify the view of interpretation 2 and support it with a detail from the interpretation. Finally you then need to sum up what the main difference between the interpretations is. Example: What is the main difference between interpretations 1 and 2? ‘In Interpretation 1, it says… This tells me…’ ‘In Interpretation 2, it says… This tells me…’ ‘Therefore the main difference between the interpretations is…’ 3 It’s not just about HOW MUCH you revise…. Within this interpretation you need to assess the interpretation compared to your own knowledge as well as using details from interpretation 1.     Radio and the Rise of the Nazis in Prewar Germany Maja Adena, Ruben Enikolopov, Maria Petrova, Veronica Santarosa, and Ekaterina Zhuravskaya* May 10, 2014 How far can the media protect or undermine democratic institutions in unconsolidated democracies, and how persuasive can they be in ensuring public support for dictator’s policies? We study this question in the context of Germany between 1929 and 1939. Radio slowed down the growth of political support for the Nazis, when Weimar government introduced pro-government political news in 1929, denying access to the radio for the Nazis up till January 1933. This effect was reversed in 5 weeks after the transfer of control over the radio to the Nazis following Hitler’s appointment as chancellor. After full consolidation of power, radio propaganda helped the Nazis to enroll new party members and encouraged denunciations of Jews and other open expressions of anti-Semitism. The effect of Nazi radio propaganda varied depending on the listeners’ predispositions toward the message. November 9th 1923, the Nazi Party with Hitler as its leader felt strong enough to kick the Bavarian G-overnement out of its sad- dle. The marching Nazis when reaching the Odeonsplatz in Munich, were odered to stop. After ignoring the order tostop, they were fired upon and a total of 16 men were killed by machinegun fire. The Nazi Party thereafter was declared as illegal and was forbidden by law. Hitler himself, as the head and leader of the party was cobvicted to spend five years in jail. 2.     Going through the labyrinth: the political economy of Argentina’s abandonment of the gold standard (1929-1933) Pablo Gerchunoff and José Luis Machinea ABSTRACT This article is the short but crucial history of four years of transition in a monetary and exchange-rate regime that culminated in 1933 with the final abandonment of the gold standard in Argentina. That process involved decisions made at critical junctures at which the government authorities had little time to deliberate and against which they had no analytical arsenal, no technical certainties and few political convictions. The objective of this study is to analyse those “decisions” at seven milestone moments, from the external shock of 1929 to the submission to Congress of a bill for the creation of the central bank and a currency control regime characterized by multiple exchange rates. The new regime that this reordering of the Argentine economy implied would remain in place, in one form or another, for at least a quarter of a century. They accompany us and are yet disconnected from our life today. How can we translate the historical past into our present? Through the medium of film the distance between the present and history is nullified and the timespan between today and back then ruptured. Dieser Regimegegner kam sei- nem Ziel, den verhassten Diktator auszuschal- ten, denkbar nahe. Allerdings hatte Hitler nur wenige Minuten vor der Explosion den Ver- sammlungssaal verlassen. Der zunächst uner- kannt gebliebene Attentäter wurde wenig spä- ter eher zufällig beim Versuch festgenommen, in die Schweiz zu entkommen. Überführt wur- de er wegen einiger verdächtiger Gegenstände, die man in seinen Taschen fand, nachdem Zoll- Georg Elser beamte ihn der Polizei übergeben hatten. Nach (1903–1945) tagelangen Verhören gestand der Inhaftierte sei- ne Tat und bekräftigte dabei immer wieder sei- ne Absicht, durch die Tötung Hitlers den Weg zu einem europäischen Frie- den gebahnt haben zu wollen. Es handelte sich um die Tat eines einzelnen Mannes, des schwäbischen Tischlers Georg Elser, der entschlossen, beharr- lich und konsequent den Anschlag geplant hatte. Neben Claus von Stauffen- bergs Anschlag vom 20. Juli 1944 war es die einzige Tat, die dem Leben des deutschen Diktators direkt gefährlich wurde. Während seit den 50er-Jahren Stauffenberg und seine Mitverschworenen langsam nicht mehr primär als „Verräter“, sondern als Widerstandskämpfer gewürdigt wurden, blieb diese Ehrung Elser noch lange Zeit versagt. Er wurde diffamiert, als verschrobe- ner Sonderling oder gar als Handlanger der Gestapo abgestempelt.     The Impact of the Nazi Racial Decrees on the University of Heidelberg Arye Carmon One of the first objectives realized by the Nazis during the years 1933-1935 was the "cleansing" (Saeuberung) of the German universities of their Jewish students and lecturers. This purge was connected with the attempt to "co- ordinate" (Gleichschaltung) German academic life with the tenets of National Socialism. Yet, while "co-ordination" and "cleansing" seem to us in retrospect to be interrelated processes, the Nazis considered them as two separate issues. The former was a long-range objective, which was never fully realized, while the ousting of Jewish academics was in fact one aspect of the Nazi "solution of the Jewish question." The following is an attempt to describe the "cleansing" process and to analyze its implications1. Additionally, the author examines the strengths and weaknesses of each of the army configurations, which helps to explain why some were more successful than others.
