This dissertation work, conducted within the Pang Khum Experimental Watershed (PKEW) in northern Thailand, ≤ -1 supports that owing to low saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks 16 mm h ), Horton overland flow (HOF) generation occurs more frequently on unpaved PKEW roads than on other watershed surfaces having higher infiltrability (e.g., mean Ks for agricultural surfaces ranges from 130 to 320 mm h-1). Because of frequent HOF generation, the road system contributes to stream sedimenta- tion throughout the rainy season. The highly compacted (bulk density ≈ 1.45 Mg m-3) PKEW road surface typically underlies a layer of loose material of finite depth. Instantaneous sediment trans- port (St) on roads varies because the supply of easily transported surface sediment is constantly altered by overland flow events, traffic, road maintenance, and mass wasting events, both during and between storms. As surface material is removed during an overland flow event, normalized ≈ -1 ≈ -1 St declines from an initial peak rate of 3 g J to a steady rate of 0.5 g J . The mechanical stress associated with vehicle passes during a storm increases the availability of loose material, producing 2-4 fold increases in St and sediment concentration (Ct) values. Herein, rainfall simu- lation data, surveys of traffic phenomena, and soil property measurements were used to parame- terize the physics-based KINEROS2 model for simulating road runoff and erosion. During model validation, instantaneous discharge was simulated well (root mean squared error (RMSE) = 14%). However, because KINEROS2 equations do not “describe” road erosion processes accurately, St was simulated poorly (RMSE = 51.6%). To improve modeling, a methodology recognizing the dynamic erodibility (DE) of a road surface was introduced. By explicitly simulating removal of a layer of loose material, the DE modeling technique improved prediction of St (RMSE decreased to 35.4 %). Zhu, e-mail [email protected]; Fax no.: 86-871-5160916 Abstract Complete floristic and vegetation surveys were done in a newly established nature reserve on a tropical mountain in southern Yunnan. Three vegetation types in three altitudinal zones were recognized: a tropical seasonal rain forest below 1,100 m; a lower montane evergreen broad- leaved forest at 1,100-1,600 m; and a montane rain forest above 1,600 m. A total of 1,657 species of seed plants in 758 genera and 146 families were recorded from the nature reserve. Tropical families (61%) and genera (81%) comprise the majority of the flora, and tropical Asian genera make up the highest percentage, showing the close affinity of the flora with the tropical Asian (Indo-Malaysia) flora, despite the high latitude (22N). Floristic changes with altitude are conspicuous. The transition from lowland tropical seasonal rain forest dominated by mixed tropical families to lower montane forest dominated by Fagaceae and Lauraceae occurs at 1,100-1,150 m. Although the middle montane forests above 1,600 m have ‘oak-laurel’ assemblage characteristics, the temperate families Magnoliaceae and Cornaceae become dominant.

The epacrids (subfamily Styphelioideae) comprise more than 550 species of woody plants ranging from small prostrate shrubs to temperate rainforest emergents. Their range extends from SE Asia through Oceania to Tierra del Fuego with their highest diversity in Australia. The overall aim of the thesis is to determine the relationships between epacrid floral features and potential pollinators, and assess the evolutionary status of any pollination syndromes. The main hypotheses were that flower characteristics relate to pollinators in predictable ways; and that there is convergent evolution in the development of pollination syndromes.

Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Hannah Betts July 2013 - 2 - - 3 - Abstract Due to forest degradation and loss, the use of ecological restoration techniques has become of particular interest in recent years. One such method is the Framework Species Approach (FSA), which was developed in Queensland, Australia. The Framework Species Approach involves a single planting (approximately 30 species) of both early and late successional species. Species planted must survive in the harsh conditions of an open site as well as fulfilling the functions of; (a) fast growth of a broad dense canopy to shade out weeds and reduce the chance of forest fire, (b) early production of flowers or fleshy fruits to attract seed dispersers and kick start animal-mediated seed distribution to the degraded site. The Framework Species Approach has recently been used as part of a restoration project in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in northern Thailand by the Forest Restoration Research Unit (FORRU) of Chiang Mai University. FORRU have undertaken a number of trials on species performance in the nursery and the field to select appropriate species. However, this has been time-consuming and labour- intensive. It has been suggested that the need for such trials may be reduced by the pre-selection of species using their functional traits as predictors of future performance. Here, seed, leaf and wood functional traits were analysed against predictions from ecological models such as the CSR Triangle and the pioneer concept to assess the extent to which such models described the ecological strategies exhibited by woody species in the seasonally-dry tropical forests of northern Thailand.

Methods: In this study, inflammation was induced by cotton pellet granuloma model (Sub-acute) using the method adopted by D’Arcy (1960). The anti-inflammatory effect of two doses of methanolic extract of Helicia nilagirica Bedd. was tested and diclofenac was used as a standard drug. The statistical analysis was carried out by One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by Dunnett’s multiple comparison tests using GraphPad In Stat 3.0 software. Results: This in vivo anti-inflammatory study shows that the plant extract at two different doses (250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg) possess significant anti-inflammatory activity (p<0.01). The standard drug diclofenac (10 mg/kg) produces maximum activity by inhibiting the wet weight and dry weight of the cotton pellet, 37.45 % and 43.70 % respectively. Two different doses of the plant extract show significant reduction of wet weight and dry weight of cotton pellet at 15.30% and 17.67% respectively for 250 mg/kg and 21.98% and 23.35% for 500 mg/kg respectively.

The estimation of anticancer activity of Helicia nilagirica in the Dalton’s lymphoma tumor bearing mice showed that administration of 50, 75, 100, 125,150 or 175mg/kg b. wt. aqueous extract of Helicia nilagirica resulted in a dose dependent increase in tumor free survival. The highest survival of 16.6% was observed in the mice receiving 175mg/ kg b.

Blakesley Horticulture Research International East Malling, Kent, United Kingdom Introduction Deforestation is one of the most serious threats to biodiversity in developing countries. It causes floods, soil erosion and disease (owing to the loss of organisms that help to control vector populations), degrades watersheds and destroys wildlife habitats. Deforestation may extirpate populations and reduce genetic diversity within populations (Kanowski 1999). In northern Thailand, large areas in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries have been deforested. Government and non-governmental organizations and local communities must all be involved in the reforestation and restoration of these forests. Thailand’s forest cover was about 53% in 1950 (Bhumibhamon 1986), but is now 22.8% or 111,010km2 (FAO 1997). These figures, however, do not distinguish between plantations and natural forest. Thailand’s natural forest cover is unofficially estimated to be 20% (Leungaramsri & Rajesh 1992). The rate of forest loss peaked in 1977 and fell to its lowest level in 1989 when commercial logging was banned. National parks and wildlife sanctuaries cover 14.2% of the country but large areas of these are deforested and fragmented (Bontawee et al. 1995). Habitat loss affects plant species in many ways, for example by reducing population sizes, altering the density of reproductive individuals, reducing reproductive success, increasing isolation and reducing genetic diversity. The present study deals with the phytochemical profiling of Helicia nilagrica using various phytochemical procedures and thin layer chromatography. The mature non-infected stem bark of Helicia nilagirica was collected, dried, powdered and subjected to sequential extraction with increasing polarity using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol and distilled water. The different extracts were cooled and evaporated to dryness with rotary evaporator. The phytochemical analyses were carried out on chloroform, ethanol and aqueous extracts. The chloroform extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, whereas alkaloids, saponins and carbohydrates were completely absent. Similarly, the ethanol extract contained flavonoids, tannins, phenols and cardiac glycosides. The aqueous extract showed the presence of saponins, tannins, cardiac glycosides and carbohydrates.
