Jesus shows us what courage is when he is in Gethsemane with the disciples before his crucifixion. He pleads with God to take away this final task but ultimately he knows that the crucifixion is necessary and he submits himself to it, trusting in God. Wow, that is some impressive courage. Peter and the disciples after seeing this, still lack their own courage. All of the disciples flee when Jesus is arrested. Peter follows behind to see what will happen to Jesus but when he is confronted three different times by people asking if he was among Jesus’s group, he denies it. The crowd, which the congregation enacts in the passion reading this weekend, also lacks courage. They fall into a phenomenon called groupthink where individuals seek conformity with the group even if the group is wrong or is expressing an opinion contrary to Jesus' entry to Jerusalem. ANNUAL MINISTRY APPEAL 2017
Last weekend was Pledge Sunday for the 2017 Annual Ministries Appeal. As you heard, this year’s appeal focuses on the theme One Faith, One Family.
Supporting the Annual Ministries Appeal gives us an incredible opportunity to touch the lives of those in our community. Our Diocese is blessed with fifteen ministries designed to strengthen families, inspire future generations and advance church leadership. There has never been a more important time to support these ministries. Your contributions touch all of us in the diocese. Every Catholic school student is impacted by these donations. Every confirmation class in the diocese is impacted by your donations. Every seminarian and deacon candidate is impacted by your donations. Every outreach to provide adult faith formation opportunities is impacted by your donations. And there are many more. These ministries are essential to our communities now!
Our goal this year is to raise $150,000. 100% of the proceeds, up to that goal, will go toward support of these ministries. Any monies raised over this amount will be returned to our parish to finance the Crespi Hall renovation project.
Thank you to all who have returned their envelopes with donations or pledges. To date, we have raised over $30,000! We hope to have everyone participate to the extent they are able. If you have not made your commitment or donation, please do so this week. Through your support, you help bring to life the spiritual and corporal works of mercy in our parishes and in our Diocese. Corporal Butron There is a floor plaque at the left rear of the Basilica near the baptistry in memory of Manuel Butrón who was the Corporal of the Guard for the Carmel Mission.
Butrón was a Spanish soldier who was born in 1736 in Valencia and came to the Monterey peninsula with the first Portolá expedition. He had been a Catalonian volunteer who had been allowed to stay in California when his unit was reassigned in 1774 to Tepic in Mexico. The corporal of the guard at the Presidio of Monterey, he was assigned as the head of the Carmel Mission garrison until he retired. Afterwards, he settled in DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY pueblo San Jose.

The San Damiano Cross
The San Damiano Cross is the large Romanesque rood cross that St. Francis of Assisi was praying before when he is said to have received the commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church. The original cross hangs in the Basilica of Saint Clare in Assisi, Italy. Franciscans cherish this cross as the symbol of their mission from God. The cross is of a type sometimes called an icon cross because besides the main figure it contains images of other saints and people related to the incident of Christy crucifixion. The tradition of such crosses began in the Eastern Church and probably reached Italy via Serbia and Croatia.
