Pp. xi + 284; 8 color plates. Price: $68.00. ISBN 965-221-047-1. This is the second volume to appear (although numbered III) in a projected series of nal reports on E. NetzerÕs 1973 –1987 excavations at Herodian Jericho (Arabic Tulul Abu al-®Alayiq). It represents a revised and updated version of Bar-NathanÕs 1988 M.A. thesis ( The Pottery of Jericho in the Hasmonean Period and the Time of Herod, and the Problem of the Transition from Hasmonean Pottery Types to Pottery Types of the Time of Herod [Jerusalem: Institute of Archaeo- logy at the Hebrew University]). The volume is divided into the fol- lowing chapters: in Chapter 1, Bar-Nathan explains the methodology that she employed to create a typology and chronology for the pottery; Chapter 2 provides an overview of the stratigraphy and chronology of the Jericho palaces; in Chapters 3 –5, Bar-Nathan presents the Hasmo- nean and Herodian pottery types (coarse wares and ne wares); and Chapter 6 is a summary and conclusion. There are two appendices, one comparing the Jericho ceramic types with those from Qumran, and the second presenting all of the pottery from selected loci at Jericho. Two concordances list the Jericho pottery types according to provenience (loci) and catalogue numbers. It would have been helpful to have the pottery illustrated at the end of the volume labeled with the type numbers, as it is cumbersome to have to ip back and forth between the drawings and the text.

Birzeit University 2010 Dedication To my dear parents, brothers, sisters and friends Abstract Many studies and researches have been conducted all over the world in order to analyze and study the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector specially the rainfed agriculture. Moreover, the potential impacts of climate change have not been quantified at local level yet. Based on this fact, this study aims to evaluate and study the potential impact of climate change on rainfed agriculture in Jenin district. Jenin has been chosen because it is considered one of the largest agricultural areas in West Bank and it has large agricultural activities. The district contributes with about 16.2% of the agricultural production in the Palestinian market. The analysis has been conducted using computer programming (CropWat) to estimate the change in yield reduction with increasing temperature (1, 2 and 3° Celsius) and decreasing precipitation (10, 20 and 30 %). The results show that with increasing temperature by 1 °C for wheat (as example) yield reduction changes by (35.7%), and for T+2 °C and T+3 °C the changes rate were (36.6 %) and (37.3 %) respectively taking into consideration no changes in the precipitation. But if all the climate parameter has changed it will be more significant; (41.7 %) the changes will be, if combined the increase in temperature (+3 °C) and reduction in precipitation (-30%).

    he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the histori- an Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-University Göttingen.     WHY WAS MOUNT GERIZIM CHOSEN FOR THE BLESSING CEREMONY? GILAD J. GEVARYAHU When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are about to enter and possess, you shall pronounce the blessing at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount Ebal (Deut. 11:29). After you have crossed the Jordan, the following shall stand on Mount Gerizim when the blessing for the people is spoken . For the curse, the following shall stand on Mount Ebal . (Deut. 27:12-13). This general location for a religious ceremony solemnizing Israel's entry into the Land of Israel is very reasonable. It is centrally located at the intersection of the north-south and east-west roads. These mountains are on either side of Shechem, Abraham's first stop in Canaan (Gen. 12:6). In Shechem, God told him that this was the land that would be given to his descendants (Gen. 12:7).1 However, it is not clear why Mount Gerizim was chosen as the site for the blessing ceremony and why Mount Ebal was chosen for the curse. The first commentator who tried to find an explanation for choosing these particular mountains was Ramban. In his commentary to Deuteronomy 11:29 he explains that the symbolism probably has to do with the location of the two mountains. Mount Gerizim is to the south, which is the right side of a person who turns eastward facing the sunrise, the forward direction in the Bible. Celebrating the greatest events of salvation history and of Jesus’ life at the very sites where they occurred is a moving and unforgettable experience of faith for all believers. Holy Week officially begins with the celebration of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, 29th of March. The highlights of the day will be the solemn mass at 8 a.m. at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre with the Blessing of the Palms and the traditional palm procession in the afternoon. The procession will start at 2:30 p.m. from the church of Bethphage down the western slope of the Mount of Olives across the Kidron valley and into the Old City of Jerusalem. Thousands of Christians from around the world will joyfully march, praying and singing in many languages. On Holy Thursday, April 2nd, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated at the Holy Sepulchre at 8 a.m. by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. In the afternoon (3:30 p.m.), will take place the traditional pilgrimage of the Franciscans to the Cenacle (the Upper Room) on Mount Zion.
