CRAFT AND TRADE IN THE 18th CENTURY RAJASTHAN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Boctor of ^l)ilos;opl)p IN )/er HISTORY ! SO I A. // XATHAR HUSSAIN -- .A Under the Supervision of Prof. B. L. Bhadani Chairman & Coordinator CENTRE OF ADVANCED STUDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2008 ^Ci>Musu m ABSTRACT The study on the 18* century has been attracting the attention of the historians such as Richard Bamett, C.A. Bayly, Muzaffar Alam, Andre Wink, Chetan Singh and others. Two subsequent works on the eastern Rajasthan by S.P. Gupta and Dilbagh Singh and on the northern Rajasthan by G.S.L. Devra have added new dimensions to the whole issue of existing debate on the 18' century, a period of transition in the history of India. Therefore, the importance of the studies on Rajasthan assumes significance which contains a treasure house of archival records, hitherto largely unexplored. My work is consisted of eight chapters with an introduction and conclusion. The first chapter deals with the study of geographical and historical profile of the Rajasthan. The geographical factor such as types of soils, hills, river and vegetation always nourishes the economy of the region. The physical location of Rajasthan had influenced its history to a greater extent. The region bears the physical diversity and we can divide it into two parts namely in the fertile south eastern zone and the thar arid zone. It was bounded by the Mughal subas (provinces) like Multan, Sindh, Delhi, Agra, Gujarat and Malwa.

  • A Review on Historical Earth Pigments Used in India's Wall Paintings
heritage Review A Review on Historical Earth Pigments Used in India’s Wall Paintings Anjali Sharma 1 and Manager Rajdeo Singh 2,* 1 Department of Conservation, National Museum Institute, Janpath, New Delhi 110011, India; [email protected] 2 National Research Laboratory for the Conservation of Cultural Property, Aliganj, Lucknow 226024, India * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Iron-containing earth minerals of various hues were the earliest pigments of the prehistoric artists who dwelled in caves. Being a prominent part of human expression through art, nature- derived pigments have been used in continuum through ages until now. Studies reveal that the primitive artist stored or used his pigments as color cakes made out of skin or reeds. Although records to help understand the technical details of Indian painting in the early periodare scanty, there is a certain amount of material from which some idea may be gained regarding the methods used by the artists to obtain their results. Considering Indian wall paintings, the most widely used earth pigments include red, yellow, and green ochres, making it fairly easy for the modern era scientific conservators and researchers to study them. The present knowledge on material sources given in the literature is limited and deficient as of now, hence the present work attempts to elucidate the range of earth pigments encountered in Indian wall paintings and the scientific studies and characterization by analytical techniques that form the knowledge background on the topic. Studies leadingto well-founded knowledge on pigments can contribute towards the safeguarding of Indian cultural heritage as well as spread awareness among conservators, restorers, and scholars.

  • Conversion in the Pluralistic Religious Context of India: a Missiological Study
Conversion in the pluralistic religious context of India: a Missiological study Rev Joel Thattupurakal Mathai BTh, BD, MTh 0000-0001-6197-8748 Thesis submitted for the degree Philosophiae Doctor in Missiology at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University in co-operation with Greenwich School of Theology Promoter: Dr TG Curtis Co-Promoter: Dr JJF Kruger April 2017 Abstract Conversion to Christianity has become a very controversial issue in the current religious and political debate in India. This is due to the foreign image of the church and to its past colonial nexus. In addition, the evangelistic effort of different church traditions based on particular view of conversion, which is the product of its different historical periods shaped by peculiar constellation of events and creeds and therefore not absolute- has become a stumbling block to the church‘s mission as one view of conversion is argued against the another view of conversion in an attempt to show what constitutes real conversion. This results in competitions, cultural obliteration and kaum (closed) mentality of the church. Therefore, the purpose of the dissertation is to show a common biblical understanding of conversion which could serve as a basis for the discourse on the nature of the Indian church and its place in society, as well as the renewal of church life in contemporary India by taking into consideration the missiological challenges (religious pluralism, contextualization, syncretism and cultural challenges) that the church in India is facing in the context of conversion. The dissertation arrives at a theological understanding of conversion in the Indian context and its discussion includes: the multiple religious belonging of Hindu Christians; the dual identity of Hindu Christians; the meaning of baptism and the issue of church membership in Indian context.
