Other Business ADRIAN THAM Honorary Secretary 11 PRESIDENT’S REPORT The Eastern Suburbs Dolphins competed strongly across all grades but all missed out on finals qualification in 2016/17. This was disappointing after some remarkable performances headlined by First Grade’s win chasing over 400 to beat eventual runners-up Bankstown, which included a superb debut century from Mark Morley. Overall the performances were erratic and inconsistent. Milestones featured more often than victories and Ian Moran was top of the class becoming the second highest run scorer of all time in First Grade. Around him Test batsman Sam Robson produced the best batting scoring 792 runs at an average of 88 with seven 50s and two hundreds in 11 innings. Elsewhere Nic Maddinson made his Test debut and Peter Nevill performed strongly for NSW after being dropped from the Australian team. It was a harsh call given Peter’s outstanding glove work and we wish both Nic and Peter well for the Ashes season ahead. Returning to Easts, off-spinner Will Somerville played regularly for NSW with some outstanding performances and fast bowler Henry Thornton showed his development as a future Big Bash and First Class player after captaining the Poidevin-Gray team. Kevin Pillay captained the Seconds and retired at the end of the season with a distinguished record of trophies and premierships. Along the pathway for junior talent, the AW Green Shield team reached the quarter finals, the Junior Academy was re established, a promising group of youngsters played strongly in Sixth Grade and Easts won SEJCA competitions from under tens to under fifteens, claiming the Junior Club Championship. The Club was involved with Dream Cricket, a program for special needs children to play cricket alongside those participating in the ever-popular in2CRICKET program. The Junior Committee had another impressive season and Brendan Lyon’s holiday cricket camps were well attended. Our major sponsor, the Intercontinental Hotel Sydney Double Bay, hosted a very successful Sporting Legends Lunch in March, a strong fund raiser for the Club and largely dedicated to supporting our Juniors. I’d like to acknowledge the wonderful sponsorship support of the Woollahra Hotel where most of the Committee meetings and a number of functions were held. A big thanks to all the hard workers and volunteers who have helped steer the Club more strategically than ever before. 12 Adrian Tham has been a tireless Secretary and scorer, Tim Brown reached another personal wicket-taking milestone as a leg spinner while keeping the books and Liz Thorp and Marcus Van Vugt organized the Juniors brilliantly. On Saturdays and many Sundays Andrew Taucher, David Smyth and Geoff de Mesquita manned the BBQ and kiosk at Waverley Oval, with hands on from Tony Adams and Steve Abbott to make sure everything was done. Again Owen Ridge kept the scoreboard alight from his hutch in First Grade. There are many tireless workers in the Club and Vice President Peter Lovitt has been conspicuous in driving your club to excellence. Thanks to all the Dolphins on and off the field for your commitment! JIM MAXWELL President TOP: LEE KIRK, GREG CLARENCE AND STEVE ABBOTT BOTTOM: GREG CLARENCE AT THE TOSS 13 Sporting Legends Lunch 14 SPORTING LEGENDS LUNCH AT INTERCONTINENTAL SYDNEY DOUBLE BAY SOCIAL REPORT As no teams qualified for the finals in season 2016/17, there was plenty of form to be recovered on the tiles of Sydney’s best watering holes. Led ably by the fresh club captains, the Club enjoyed an improved year off the field. In a year when some of the most consistent performers in all of Sydney Grade Cricket took their drinking abilities to other cities, there were some big shoes to fill. In the place of Angus Robson and Daniel Rootes, the likes of Matthew Sarkies, Peter Lazarus, Jono Bank and Mark Morley frequently filled their boots while consistent performers such as Oliver Maxwell and David Dunne stayed true to form. The Christmas party was once again a raging success. General consensus was that we don’t spend enough time in white clothing so the club happily embraced the all-white theme of the night. Despite the tonal theme, Andrew Taucher insisted on serving up copious amounts of beetroot on dodgy sandwiches that stained shirts and ended people’s chances of attracting any attention from the large number of women present on the night. The fact that recall of this night is minimal as this report is written in March would suggest that a great night was had by all! The formal events of the year were once again a roaring success. The gods came to the party, as nearly 100 mills of rain fell in the week of the Corporate Lunch. As games were slowly called off through that Friday afternoon, beers flowed and stories became more and more tainted by tax. As the only grade not called off on the Friday, a few of the Second Grade boys sighed a great relief when the game was eventually called off on Saturday morning – Jacob Taucher was heard yelling “Great Pepsi boys, you little beauty” after the umpires informed the captains of the washout. The highlight of the presentation night was undoubtedly Sandman’s “Rare XI”, captained by Terry Mystakas and managed by Dave Smyth. Nathan Rowe, Reuben Taucher and Kevin Pillay were other members in a formidable outfit. The hosts of the night had the crowd in stitches and started getting frustrated by how many compliments they received at El Topo later in the night. Other highlights included an afternoon of drinking games led by Club Coach Murray Creed and several successful “Dolphin multis” (Woolhara Hotel into El Topo – a combination that consistently pays out). Well done to all those involved, plenty of momentum to be carried into next year. Cheers! TOM “GAL” GALLOP & JACOB “COB” TAUCHER 15 Millar Munro Inspires Us All Millar Munro is one of our more lively young cricketers at Easts Cricket Club. Last year Millar was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. Against the odds, he is surviving but he has been left with significant deficits and the Club held a match to help raise funds. Millar’s Story Local Legends Local One morning in September 2016 a young six year old boy’s life would change forever.

MONDAY, JULY 28, 2014 SPORTS Ricciardo wins drenched GP BUDAPEST: Australian Daniel Ricciardo charged to a thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix victory yes- terday, his second Formula One win for Red Bull, as a drenched track caused chaos among world championship leaders. Rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate and championship leader Nico Rosberg reached a new peak as Hamilton rebuffed team orders to let Rosberg by into third place. Mercedes said it would hold a team inquiry. But Hamilton’s success trimmed Rosberg’s lead in the title race from 14 points to 11. The German now leads with 202, Hamilton has 191 and Ricciardo is third with 131. Ricciardo, 25, held off Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso to take first place in a race which saw several high-speed crashes after a heavy downpour just before the start changed the course of the race. Ricciardo led twice before he fought back to recapture the lead with three laps remaining, fol- lowing a series of daring passes. Ricciardo’s win was executed with great elan and confirmed him as a driver with the potential to be a future champion. Ricciardo won the Canadian Grand Prix in June and is the only non- Mercedes driver to have won a race this year. “This feels just as good as the first one,” said Ricciardo. “It was a lot of fun in the last few laps, with the passing. • Decolonisation and the Imperial Cricket Conference, 1947–1965: a Study in Transnational Commonwealth History?
Decolonisation and the Imperial Cricket Conference, 1947–1965: A Study in Transnational Commonwealth History? by Usha Iyer A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire September 2013 Student Declaration Concurrent registration for two or more academic awards *I declare that while registered as a candidate for the research degree, I have not been a registered candidate or enrolled student for another award of the University or other academic or professional institution Material submitted for another award *I declare that no material contained in the thesis has been used in any other submission for an academic award and is solely my own work Signature of Candidate: Type of Award : PhD School : School of Sport, Tourism and the Outdoors Abstract The game of cricket is often discussed as an enduring legacy of the British Empire. This dissertation examines the response of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) as the official governing body of ‘international’ men’s cricket to developments related to decolonisation of the British Empire between 1947 and 1965. This was a period of intense political flux and paradigmatic shifts. This study draws on primary sources in the form of records of ICC and MCC meetings and newspaper archives, and a wide-ranging corpus of secondary sources on the history of cricket, history of the Commonwealth and transnational perspectives on history. It is the contention of this dissertation that these cricket archives have hitherto not been exploited as commentary on decolonisation or the Commonwealth. Due attention is given to familiarising the reader with the political backdrop in the Empire and Commonwealth against which the ICC is studied.

  • Women's Cricket, Pioneers and Unsung Heroes
Women’s Cricket, Pioneers and Unsung Heroes The important contribution made to women’s cricket by former students of Dartford College of Physical Education © The Ӧsterberg Collection Jane Claydon 2021 Unsung Heroes A great deal of publicity has been given to women’s cricket in the last decade and yet, some modern authors, in their histories of the game, have not included the names of many talented international cricketers with links to Dartford. Perhaps this is because the authors were not taught by members of staff trained at a Specialist College of Physical Education and are unaware of the heritage of Dartford, Bedford, Chelsea, Dunfermline and other later foundations. As a result, they have missed out on a rich history of women cricketers and administrators. I am sure Mary Duggan would be surprised to find that her lengthy and significant career is not highlighted in one recent publication. I have attempted to redress the balance and introduce the reader to many other players who trained at Dartford College. They may not be household names, but during their careers they influenced the development of the game for women and the outcome of many significant matches. Information about the history of women’s cricket is easy to find. Several books of interest have been published in the last half century. Perhaps, Nancy Joy’s Maiden Over, published in 1950, is overlooked by younger researchers, but it is a source of interesting details about the 1948/49 tour to Australia and New Zealand in which the author participated. The Cricket Archive can provide details of the performance of all England women cricketers, the WCA year books are available to view online and many of the players feature on the pages of Wikipedia.
