ENG Press Text.Docx Every Truth has Four Corners Art from Berlin: Works from the Volker Diehl Collection Curator: Mark Gisbourne Opening: 19.03.2021, 6:30 p.m. Duration: 20.03-9.05.2021 OP ENHEIM | Plac Solny 4, Wrocław, Poland openheim.org fb.com/openheim intagram.com/op_enheim FULL PRESS KIT: http://bit.ly/FourCorners_Press Contact for media: [email protected], (0) 48 601 656 335 _________________________________ Every Truth Has Four Corners is an exhibition featuring a selection of works from among nearly one thousand objects making up the collection of Volker Diehl, a Berlin-based art dealer and co-founder of the international Art Forum Berlin fair, who began his career alongside artists such as Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik or Shigeko Kubota. The four selected threads – “A Singular View,” “The Minimal Mind,” “Building a Constructed World” and “Fetish and Fantasy” – focus on post-war and contemporary works gradually included in the collection throughout Diehl’s life. In collaboration with Volker Diehl, Mark Gisbourne, the curator of the exhibition and one of the most recognisable and respected curators and art historians in Europe, has created an extraordinary story featuring outstanding works of art from all over the world, including a large section representing the Russian, German and Asian art scenes. However, this is not a typical presentation of a private collection, but a multi-level story whose starting point and motto is the quote from Confucius. The exhibition is conceived in a way that encourages reflection on Diehl’s unique, international perspective, ranging from his passion for minimalist and conceptual constructions, to the powerful proclivities of fetishism and the fantastical. Although the selected areas do not reveal all the paths of the collector’s visual interests, they embody the dominant trends in the development of the collection and Diehl’s sense of intellectual inquiry. As both a collector and gallery owner with a strong background in art history, Volker Diehl (b. 1957) has always believed in the immediate interrelationship between personal commitments of self-acquisition and the commercial or transactional side of the art business. This was evident in the crucial role he played in the founding of the ART FORUM Berlin art fair in 1996, and as its subsequent administrative director. Since his time as a personal assistant to Christos Joachimides and Norman Rosenthal during the now famous ZEITGEIST exhibition in Berlin (1982), he has developed a vein of individualism and collector acquisition. Every Truth Has Four Corners is the next exhibition in OP ENHEIM presenting world art collections that was launched in 2019. _________________________________ Artists: Marc Adrian / AES + F / Martin Assig / Blue Noses / Martin Borowski / Sergej Bratkov / Zofia Butrymowicz / KP Brehmer / Killian Breier / Hal Busse / Carmen Calvo / Olga Chernysheva / Jhonny Cineus LHerisson / Herman De Vries / Simon English / Amélie Esterházy / Constantin Flondor / Nadine Fortilus / Hermann Goepfert / Ivan Gorshkov / Claudia Hart / Susan Hefuna / Marta Hoepffner / Zhang Huan / Ritzi & Peter Jacobi / Minjung Kim / Shigeko Kubota / Tadaaki Kuwayama / Heinz Mack / Alexander Maximov / Christian Megert / Boris Mikhailov / Christiane Möbus / Vladimir Monroe / Paul Neagu / Lev Nussberg / Viktor Novatzki / Jolanta Owidzka / Aidan Salakhova / Gregor Schneider / Sudarshan Shetty / Alexey Shulgin / Turi Simeti / Ioana Maria Sisea / Tomoko Takahashi / Richard Tuttle / Grazia Varisco / Jef Verheyen / Herman De Vries / Günter Weseler _________________________________ Organizer: OP ENHEIM Sponsorship: Womak Holding SA.

  • I Research Text
I Research Text Berlin's Gallery Scene With more than 400 galleries and 20,000 artists from around the world calling the German capital home, Berlin has become a top centre for contemporary art. Berlin, March 2017 Whether an artist, gallery owner, curator, critic, or collector, no art professional can pass by Berlin. As a result, many artists are drawn to the German capital, whether for a few weeks, months or years for for a lifetime. Artists such as Thomas Demand, Candice Breitz, Jonas Burgert, Olafur Eliasson, Jeppe Hein, Monica Bonvicini, Katharina Grosse and Ai Weiwei all live and work in Berlin. A recent report on the business aspects of Berlin's cultural industry revealed that more than 20,000 visual artists make their home in the city. About 6,000 of them show their work in Berlin galleries. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the now reunited city developed into a centre for contemporary art with a well-deserved international reputation. Whether painting, sculpture, photography, performance art and installations, artists exhibit their works made in Berlin at all the major trade shows and exhibitions, biennials and the major Documenta show heldevery five years in Kassel. The major hotspots for galleries in Berlin-Mitte, Kreuzberg, Potsdamer Straße and recently again Charlottenburg have developed an excellent reputation. Information portals like INDEX Berlin also compile lists of trendy art spots in the city. www.indexberlin.de Berlin is currently experiencing an artistic boom like that last seen in the 1920s.. A look back at history shows that the excitement of city life with all of its rich contrasts exercised a major draw on artists in inter-war Germany turning Berlin into the focal point of the German arts and culture scene at the time.

Wallis, Stephen. “Berlin Erupts,” Departures, May/June 2007. Our first courses didn’t start arriving until after 11 o’clock, but the food was little more than an afterthought on this Saturday night. There were plenty of drinks, everyone was smoking (living in New York, I’d forgotten what that was like), and the vibe was good. Robert Goff and Cassie Rosenthal were hosting the dinner on the top floor of the Postfuhramt, an old imperial post office, to celebrate the opening of a Berlin branch of their New York gallery, Goff + Rosenthal. It was the weekend of Art Forum Berlin, the city’s prestigious annual fair, and artists, collectors, curators, and assorted friends from several countries filled the room. Above our heads a slightly decrepit neoclassical rotunda soared some 50 feet, a faded emblem of 19th-century grandeur. Downstairs in the C/O Berlin, a small institution that shows photo and video works in dilapidated rooms with peeling paint, Louis Vuitton was throwing a party for a series of Vanessa Beecroft photographs the company had commissioned. It all felt like the perfect microcosm of Berlin, a distinctive confluence of culture, nightlife, and alluring architectural spaces. I sat next to Cornelia Renz, a fortyish painter who draws large carnivalesque images of underage vixens and domi- natrices using acid-hued pigment markers. Her work owes a debt to Freud, tattoo parlors, and the outsider artist Henry Darger for its graphic, illustrational quality and fetishization of powerful girl characters. Renz studied at Leipzig’s Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, the academy that has produced some of the hottest painters in the art world lately.
