The school was founded in the cultural con- text of the 20th century and covered the following components: a) professional component: a unifying idea of adopting the European model of composing activity; b) stylistic / aesthetic component: the simultaneous existence of different stylistic tendencies, positioning numerous composers from different generations as promoters of the national idea; c) educational component: non-institutional and institutional forms of education, the influence of the cultural and educational centres from other areas on the expansion of the stylistic and aesthetic directions and modernizing the composing education. The entire history of Ottoman rule was unfavorable to the Macedonians: their conquerors were ruthless and oppressive. But the period of the Macedonian national resurgence, assuming a recognizable and meaningful form beginning in the 1870s, was extraordinarily burdensome and grueling. These last four decades of Turkish rule in Macedonia can likely be categorized as the bloodiest and most chaotic years of Macedonia’s existence. Unfortunately for the Macedonians, even after the Turks were evicted as their landlords and executioners, the ideals of liberty, justice, dignity and equality remained distant and inaccessible. The Berlin Congress of July 1878 reversed the short-lived Treaty of San Stefano’s decision to attach Macedonia to Bulgaria, a decision inked only a few months prior. The European Powers factored heavily in shaping the outcomes of these treaties.

MILOŠEVIĆ’S DAYS Banja Luka, April 9–11, 2008 A large number of artists and experts from various arias assembled during the manifestation The Vlado S. Milošević’s Days, held for the ninth time in Banja Luka. Alongside the central festival event, an international ethnomusicological and musicological scientific conference, there were the accompanying programmes held as well – the promotion of Master of Arts and graduate students of the Academy of Arts of the University of Banja Luka, an exhibition of paintings by Leonila Jočić entitled Tradition as Inspiration held at the National and University Library of the Republic of Srpska, as well as presentations of several valuable publications. The Festival was set between two concerts. At its opening, the Mixed Choir of the Academy of Arts and the University of Banja Luka performed under the leadership of conductor Nemanja Savić, while the closing was entrusted to the United Symphonic Orchestra of the students of the Banja Luka Academy, the Philological-Art Faculty in Kragujevac and students of the School of Music Vlado S. Milošević from Banja Luka. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, 1000 Skopje, North Macedonia; [email protected] Received: 17 May 2020; Accepted: 28 July 2020; Published: 30 July 2020 Abstract: Defining the Balkans as a geographic, cultural and semantic entity triggers an interpretation of them as some idea, concept, oftentimes even a stereotype. The Balkans are usually interpreted as a singular entity, generalized and set in a single framework. That generalized view is often ambivalent. The Balkans are often interpreted and presented as a ‘powder keg’, a ‘bridge between the East and the West’, a part of Europe that is simply different, a place of strong emotions and attractive forms of music and dance, etc. However, the Balkans represent a set of cultural units that are in constant interaction, with each of the cultures of the Balkans being specific and authentic. Macedonia, as one of the pages of the ‘Balkan story’, will be presented at three levels—regarding its drama, music and dance. The specific characteristics of the music and the dance fields will be presented through their most significant features and examples, and the treatment of the topic of the Balkans in Macedonian drama will be covered as well. The analysis confirms that generalization is impossible even within a single culture, as each artist and medium of performance has its own unique expression. The cultural forms of Macedonian culture are only part of the wider pluralistic representation of the Balkans.
