Library to Receive Innovation Studios Equipment

Thanks to the input of several people and organizaons in the community, the Nebraska Library Commission has selected the Plasmouth Library to parcipate 3D printer in the Library Innovaon Studios Project! That means that the library will be receiving a 3D printer, laser cuer, vinyl cuer, CNC router, embroidery machine, Arduino, Makey Makey, soldering ma- chine, video creang equipment, and more for a period of 20 weeks. The equipment is tentavely sched- uled to arrive in October or November. This three-year project was made possible with a grant of $530,732 from the Instute of Museum and Li- brary Services awarded to the Nebraska Library Commission in partnership with University of Nebraska—Lincoln, Nebraska Innovaon Studio, Nebraska Extension, and Regional Li- brary Systems. The project allows small libraries to use a variety of equipment to determine the need and interest in the community. At the end of the project, the library will evaluate what has garnered the most interest and plan to acquire that equipment on a permanent basis. More informaon on the project can be found on the NLC website hp://nlc.nebraska.gov/ grants/InnovaonStudios/. If interested in being trained on the equipment, please contact Karen Mier at 402-296-4154 x23 or via email at kmier@plasmouth.org. Lego Mindstorms

The Solar Eclipse is History

We hope that most of you were able to enjoy watching the solar eclipse on August 19. The library handed out 1500 glasses, 490 of which went to the schools in town to allow their students to safely view the eclipse. Of the 1500 glasses, 1000 came through a grant from STAR_Net, a col- laboraon with the Naonal Science Foundaon, NASA, Google, and the Gordon and Bey Moore Foundaon. An addional 100 came from the Nebraska Library Commission, and the library purchased 400.

Two Early “Europeans” on the Platte

Harlan Seyfer, Plattsmouth National Historic District Historian

When Eenne Vénaird, sieur de Bourgmont, arrived at the Mouth of the Plae on June 16, 1714, he be- came the first European known to set foot in the future state of Nebraska. Although there is no documen- taon of such, it is unlikely he traveled alone. He needed a crew of experienced boatmen. Frank Norall, in his book Bourgmont: Explorer of the Missouri, notes that Bourgmont had the support of wealthy Lamothe Cadillac (founder of Fort Detroit, hence the car’s namesake). So the financial backing was pre- sent to hire a crew for a substanal expedion. But, as noted, sadly no one else is menoned, even in the two reports about the trip that Bourgmont sent back to France. However, there may have been Europe- ans who preceded Bourgmont to the Plae, but who simply le no trace of their foray.

Aer Bourgmont, it wasn’t unl 1720 that the next European is known to have reached the Plae. Their Indian allies soon brought the Spanish in Santa Fe the news. Worse yet – from the Spanish viewpoint – a stream of rumors of Frenchmen incursions on the plains began to trickle in. In 1717, during an entrada to El Cuartelejo in today’s western Kansas, the Spanish found trade goods of clearly European (i.e., French) origin. (El Cuartelejo, Spanish for “far district,” is the northernmost pueblo and the only pueblo in Kansas.) In El Cuartelejo, the Spanish were shown a Paloma Apache Indian who reportedly had been shot by a Kansas Indian with a European firearm. Other Palomas told the Spanish that the French had established selements on a large east- flowing river north of their Kansas enemies.

Alarmed, Antonio Valverde, the governor of Nuevo México, wast- ed no me wring the Viceroy of Nueva España in Mexico City, “The French have their selement on a very large river which here is known as the Jesús María.” The Río Jesús María, some histori- ans speculate, is the Plae or South Plae River.

To counter this perceived French threat, Governor Valverde or- dered his Vice-Governor Don Pedro de Villasur to conduct a recon- naissance in force north of El Cuartelejo. Villasur’s well document- ed expedion in search of French “intruders” is the first known arrival of the Spanish in today’s Nebraska. Unfortunately, from his point of view, Villasur and his companions – most of whom are idenfied by name in later reports – were aacked by Otoe and Pawnee Indians and nearly wiped out near the confluence of the Loup and Plae Rivers.

Connued on page 6..

Page 6 Between the Pages September 2017 An aside: Among the dead was José Naranjo, Villasur’s chief guide. Naranjo was 25% African and 75% Ho- pi Indian. Highly esteemed by the Spanish, Naranjo was well integrated into Spanish culture; he married a Spanish lady and became a wealthy landowner. Governor Valverde – in his report to the Viceroy men- oned above – wrote that Naranjo had discovered the Jesús María. Alas, this is the only known menon of Naranjo’s achievement, and the conjecture that the Río Jesús María is the Plae River remains today just that – conjecture.

We must look to Bourgmont again for the next Europeans on the Plae. Villasur’s 1720 foray was in part a response to receiving word of Bourgmont’s 1714 arrival at the mouth of the Plae. When the French in Louisiana heard of Villasur’s disaster on the Plae, their response was to recall Bourgmont from his rere- ment in France to lead an expedion in 1724 into today’s western Kansas.

The primary purpose of the expedion was to establish an alliance with the Plains Apaches.

The journal of the Bourgmont expedion appears to have been kept by the mining engineer, Philippe de La Renaudière, who accompanied Bourgmont. (We use the translaon of the journal by Frank Norall. ) The opening entry (dated 25 June 1724) notes that five Canadians accompanied the expedion, one of which was Quesnel, an army doctor.

On July 24, Renaudière recorded, At four in the morning M[onsieur] de Bourgmont sent M[onsieur] Quesnel, Canadian, with two Kansa Indians to go to the Otos to invite the head chief of that tribe to come with a band of his warriors to join him on the expedion to the Padoucas.

At that me the Otoe Indians were living on Salt Creek near the Plae River.

The journal entry for October 4 reads Sieur Quesnel, the Canadian, has arrived … from the Otos, where M. de Bourg- mont had sent him to request the head chief to join him at the Kansa vil- lage. He brought with him another seven war chiefs of this [the Oto] tribe, who arrived with their peace calumets [ceremonial pipes].

Aer the expedion returned, twelve expedion members signed the journal, tesfying to its accuracy. Curiously, one of those signatures is spelled “quenel” with no capitalizaon. Is this Quesnel? Noted Missouri historian Millard Spes thought so, when he transcribed “quenel” as “Quesnel” in his book on the Bourgmont expedion through Kansas.

From all of this, we can gather that Quesnel was well educated and trusted by Bourgmont, even if his full name is given no- where in the journal. However, on the Ancestry.com message board, it is speculated that this is Raymond Quesnel, born in Montreal 1697. No more informaon on Quesnel is forth- coming. He disappears into the fog of me.
