The tally so far is: 277,420 The McCarrick Report Before we can begin speaking about this “report” (herein referred to as “MR”), it should be noted that this report is NOT a canonical report. Rather, it is a published document that was put together by unknown sources (assumed to be the personal attorney of the Holy Father), as no author was given and not even the people who were involved in preparing the report were listed. Over eighty people were said to have been interviewed and yet, there is no list of them either. The report begins by pointing the finger at Pope Francis’ predecessors, the late (Saint) Pope John Paul II and the elderly Pope Benedict XVI. It was Pope John Paul II who made the decision to make (former) AB McCarrick a Cardinal of the Church when he was the Archbishop of Washington, D.C. even after he received a letter from the (late and former) Cardinal of New York, Cardinal John O’Connor, which reported allegations against (former) AB McCarrick, accusing him of “sleeping with other priests” and “sharing beds with seminarians.” As a result of this letter from Cardinal O’Connor, an investigation was started. According to the MR: “What is known now… is that three of the four American bishops provided inaccurate and incomplete information to the Holy See regarding McCarrick’s sexual conduct with young adults.” The problems I see with this report are as follows: 1.) (Former) AB McCarrick wrote a personal letter to Pope John Paul II saying he was innocent, and the Holy Father believed him. End of story? 2.) When Cardinal O’Connor wrote his letter to the pope, he learned of these allegations from Monsignor James Cassidy, a priest/psychologist from the Archdiocese of New York who had spoken to Doctor Rick Fitzgibbons, a psychiatrist, who personally interviewed the victim. When the Nuncio was asked to investigate this claim, he never consulted Monsignor Cassidy, Doctor Fitzgibbons, or even the accuser/victim. 3.) Two of the bishops called to testify were former auxiliary bishops of (former) AB McCarrick when he was in Newark. 4.) The third bishop called had become McCarrick’s successor when he came to the Diocese of Metuchen. These two problems hardly speak to the veracity, integrity, or independence of the MR. 5.) According to the MR, two bishops witnessed immoral behavior in a catering hall and never reported it. It appears that a network of younger bishops had and still seem to be covering for an older bishop who “made” them. Worse than that, there also appears to be an apparent “network of silence” surrounding McCarrick, which truly is one of the more serious problems which the MR never addressed. 6.) The former Nuncio in the United States, Archbishop Carlos Maria Viganò, has been very public about his disdain for this process and has in his possession a plethora of documents, with times and places where he brought the matter of McCarrick’s misdeeds to the Holy See. AB Viganò alleges that the present Holy Father has lied on several occasions about all these matters. 7.) While the MR takes to task the reports and allegations of AB Viganò, he was never interviewed or even summoned to be part of this report. This once again underscores the fact that this was NOT a canonical report or investigation, but one that was flawed by the mere fact that key individuals with direct knowledge of the allegations were not interviewed. It could be likened to an annulment case where one of the former spouses or witnesses were not given the opportunity to tell their side of the story. 8.) The MR stated that AB Viganò in 2012: “Failed to act on instructions given by Cardinal Marc Armand Ouellet” (the Prefect of the Congregation of the Bishops) to investigate the new claim against McCarrick involving a priest in the Diocese of Metuchen.
