  • Ealing Studios and the Ealing Comedies: the Tip of the Iceberg
Ealing Studios and the Ealing Comedies: the Tip of the Iceberg ROBERT WINTER* In lecture form this paper was illustrated with video clips from Ealing films. These are noted below in boxes in the text. My subject is the legendary Ealing Studios comedies. But the comedies were only the tip of the iceberg. To show this I will give a sketch of the film industry leading to Ealing' s success, and of the part played by Sir Michael Balcon over 25 years.! Today, by touching a button or flicking a switch, we can see our values, styles, misdemeanours, the romance of the past and present-and, with imagination, a vision of the" future. Now, there are new technologies, of morphing, foreground overlays, computerised sets, electronic models. These technologies affect enormously our ability to give currency to our creative impulses and credibility to what we do. They change the way films can be produced and, importantly, they change the level of costs for production. During the early 'talkie' period there many artistic and technical difficulties. For example, artists had to use deep pan make-up to' compensate for the high levels of carbon arc lighting required by lower film speeds. The camera had to be put into a soundproof booth when shooting back projection for car travelling sequences. * Robert Winter has been associated with the film and television industries since he appeared in three Gracie Fields films in the mid-1930s. He joined Ealing Studios as an associate editor in 1942 and worked there on more than twenty features. After working with other studios he became a founding member of Yorkshire Television in 1967.

Flanagan 2015 iii THE BRITISH WAR FILM, 1939-1980: CULTURE, HISTORY, AND GENRE Kevin M. Flanagan, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2015 This dissertation argues that discussions of war representation that privilege the nationalistic, heroic, and redemptively sacrificial strand of storytelling that dominate popular memory in Britain ignore a whole counter-history of movies that view war as an occasion to critique through devices like humor, irony, and existential alienation. Instead of selling audiences on what Graham Dawson has called “the pleasure culture of war” (a nationally self-serving mode of talking about and profiting from war memory), many texts about war are motivated by other intellectual and ideological factors. Each chapter includes historical context and periodizing arguments about different moments in British cultural history, explores genre trends, and ends with a comparative analysis of representative examples.

It argues that the biopic is a necessary category because producers, reviewers and cinemagoers have significant investments in biographical subjects, and because biopics construct a ‘public history’ for a broad audience.

A BRAND NEW 4K RESTORATION © 1949 STUDIOCANAL Films Ltd www.studiocanalpress.co.uk UK RELEASE DATES June 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the original UK release of Kind Hearts & Coronets, the jewel in Ealing Studios’ crown, and arguably one of the finest British films ever made. To celebrate this anniversary STUDIOCANAL are re-releasing the film in cinemas and then in a stunning Collector’s Edition as part of their Vintage Classics Collection. UK Theatrical release - June 7th 2019 Brand new 3 disc Collector’s Edition and other formats - June 24th 2019 https://www.facebook.com/vintageclassicsfilm www.studiocanalpress.co.uk SYNOPSIS In the condemned cell, the tenth Duke of Chalfont – formerly Louis Mazzini - is writing the memoir that will explain his path to the gallows. It concerns the vow he made to avenge the humiliation of his mother, a minor member of the aristocratic D’Ascoyne family, excommunicated after her scandalous elopement with an Italian opera singer. It also describes his romantic obsession with Sibella, a childhood friend with whose family he lodges after the death of his mother. When the D’Ascoynes deny his mother’s wish to be buried in the family tomb, Louis vows to kill everyone between him and the Chalfont dukedom. His first victim is the arrogant young Ascoyne D’Ascoyne, a banker’s son, whom he drowns by propelling his punt over a weir at Maidenhead. (Ascoyne’s lover also perishes.) The death creates an opening at the bank, which Louis fills by sending a cleverly worded letter of condolence to his victim’s father.

Included as part of the study are both existing and original theories of the elements of film comedy. An extensive look into the development of film comedy traces the role of comedy in a socio-cultural and historical manner and identifies the major comic themes and conventions that continue to influence film comedy.

  • The Cultural Impact of British Film
Appendices June 2009 Appendices I Database of British films: methodology Intuitive list of UK films 1946-2006 Random list of UK films 1946-2006 II Film case studies III Statistical analysis of UK film releases in Europe and the US VI Marketing case studies V Analytical tables VI Image clearances I Database of British films Methodology Research for this study was partly based on building, for the first time, a database of all UK feature-length films known to have been released over the reference period 1946- 2006. The database was then used to produce two samples: the intuitive list of 200 UK films and the random list. For further details please contact the Research and Statistics Unit at the UK Film Council. Intuitive list of UK films 1946-2006 This list contains 200 of the UK films that have been regarded by critical consensus as the best in the canons of national cinema. The selection was based on intuitive criteria which took into account existing scholarship and film review literature, ongoing contemporary demand for those films in new media such as DVD or downloads, and evidence of those films being referred to, quoted or evoked in the wider context of UK culture. The list is not comprehensive; by definition, any such list cannot be, because it is based on largely subjective criteria which are not stable over time, as templates of taste and popular appeal are in a constant state of flux. However, the authors have taken particular care to ensure that the sample does not merely reflect the taste range and aesthetic preoccupations of a chosen elite, but features as wide a range of films as possible in terms of genre, form, themes and audience appeal.
