Traditions, Part Two of the Retrospective British Film, Continues Its Survey of British Values: Spirit, Class and Empire The Museum of Modern Art Department of Film 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART #23 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TRADITIONS, PART TWO OF THE RETROSPECTIVE BRITISH FILM, CONTINUES ITS SURVEY OF BRITISH VALUES: SPIRIT, CLASS AND EMPIRE TRADITIONS, the main body of the comprehensive exhibition BRITISH FILM, is con tinuing in the Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters of The Museum of Modern Art with works concerned with the British national character and institutions. On the schedule for May and June are two very different views of patriotism and the military, In Which We Serve and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp; various approaches to the class system, whether harshly realistic (This Sporting Life), coolly ironic (Darling...), or outright absurd (I'm All Right Jack); and unabashed tributes to personal pluck and persistence, from The Cruel Sea and Odette to Chariots of Fire. TRADITIONS is a critical history presented chronologically within the specific traditions that collectively distinguish British film. Following the section on \ British Values: Spirit, Class and Empire, the exhibition will concentrate on The Literary Tradition: Book and Stage, Realism (in both fiction and documentaries), The Musical and Comedy Tradition, and Melodramatics. The exhibition will continue through late 1986. Of special note in the May-June schedule is a one-day tribute to the Rank Organi sation on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary. On May 30, the Department of Film will screen Rank's first production, The Turn of the Tide; Rank's first release, Moscow Nights (directed by Anthony Asquith, with Harry Baur and Laurence Olivier); and the 1984 Educating Rita. BRITISH FILM would not have been possible without decades of work in acquiring and preserving British films by the staff of the National Film Archive, a division of the British Film Institute, London. In 1985, the NFA celebrates its 50th year, as does The Museum of Modern Art's Department of Film; our close collaboration during the joint anniversaries is both fitting and appropriate. The shape and con tent of BRITISH FILM were determined by the curatorial staffs of both institu tions; the majority of prints in this exhibition will be 35mm copies borrowed from the National Film Archive. Special thanks go to Sir Richard Attenborough, Chairman, and Anthony Smith, Director, the British Film Institute, and to David Francis, Curator of the National Film Archive, for their co-operation. more/ No. 23 Page 2 Co-directing BRITISH FILM in New York are Adrienne Mancia and Laurence Kardish, Curators in the Department of Film; from London, Clyde Jeavons, Deputy Curator of the National Film Archive; Elaine Burrows, Viewings Supervisor, NFA; and David Meeker, Feature Films Officer, NFA. Scott Meek, former Feature Films Officer, also participated in the selection. The Department of Film would also like to thank the following American distri butors for the loan of films and their permission to screen prints borrowed from Britain: Janus Films, Films Incorporated, Kino International, and MGM/UA. Thanks are also given to William K. Everson, New York, and Geoff Brown, London, for their advice and guidance on BRITISH FILM. BRITISH FILM is sponsored by Pearson and Goldcrest Films and Television, London. Additional support comes from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the British Council, London, and The Roy and Niuta Titus Fund. J OHN F . A NDREWS OBE JOHN F. ANDREWS is an editor, educator, and cultural leader with wide experience as a writer, lecturer, consultant, and event producer. From 1974 to 1984 he enjoyed a decade as Director of Academic Programs at the FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY. In that capacity he redesigned and augmented the scope and appeal of SHAKESPEARE QUARTERLY, supervised the Library’s book-publishing operation, and orchestrated a period of dynamic growth in the FOLGER INSTITUTE, a center for advanced studies in the Renaissance whose outreach he extended and whose consortium grew under his guidance from five co-sponsoring universities to twenty-two, with Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Rutgers, Virginia, and Yale among the additions. During his time at the Folger, Mr. Andrews also raised more than four million dollars in grant funds and helped organize and promote the library’s multifaceted eight- city touring exhibition, SHAKESPEARE: THE GLOBE AND THE WORLD, which opened in San Francisco in October 1979 and proceeded to popular engagements in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington. Between 1979 and 1985 Mr. Andrews chaired America’s National Advisory Panel for THE SHAKESPEARE PLAYS, the BBC/TIME-LIFE TELEVISION canon. He then became one of the creative principals for THE SHAKESPEARE HOUR, a fifteen-week, five-play PBS recasting of the original series, with brief documentary segments in each installment to illuminate key themes; these one-hour programs aired in the spring of 1986 with Walter Matthau as host and Morgan Bank and NEH as primary sponsors.

  • The North of England in British Wartime Film, 1941 to 1946. Alan
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by CLoK The North of England in British Wartime Film, 1941 to 1946. Alan Hughes, University of Central Lancashire The North of England is a place-myth as much as a material reality. Conceptually it exists as the location where the economic, political, sociological, as well as climatological and geomorphological, phenomena particular to the region are reified into a set of socio-cultural qualities that serve to define it as different to conceptualisations of England and ‘Englishness’. Whilst the abstract nature of such a construction means that the geographical boundaries of the North are implicitly ill-defined, for ease of reference, and to maintain objectivity in defining individual texts as Northern films, this paper will adhere to the notion of a ‘seven county North’ (i.e. the pre-1974 counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, County Durham, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Cheshire) that is increasingly being used as the geographical template for the North of England within social and cultural history.1 The British film industry in 1941 As 1940 drew to a close in Britain any memories of the phoney war of the spring of that year were likely to seem but distant recollections of a bygone age long dispersed by the brutal realities of the conflict. Outside of the immediate theatres of conflict the domestic industries that had catered for the demands of an increasingly affluent and consuming population were orientated towards the needs of a war economy as plant, machinery, and labour shifted into war production.
