The Cultural Impact of British Film Appendices June 2009 Appendices I Database of British films: methodology Intuitive list of UK films 1946-2006 Random list of UK films 1946-2006 II Film case studies III Statistical analysis of UK film releases in Europe and the US VI Marketing case studies V Analytical tables VI Image clearances I Database of British films Methodology Research for this study was partly based on building, for the first time, a database of all UK feature-length films known to have been released over the reference period 1946- 2006. The database was then used to produce two samples: the intuitive list of 200 UK films and the random list. For further details please contact the Research and Statistics Unit at the UK Film Council. Intuitive list of UK films 1946-2006 This list contains 200 of the UK films that have been regarded by critical consensus as the best in the canons of national cinema. The selection was based on intuitive criteria which took into account existing scholarship and film review literature, ongoing contemporary demand for those films in new media such as DVD or downloads, and evidence of those films being referred to, quoted or evoked in the wider context of UK culture. The list is not comprehensive; by definition, any such list cannot be, because it is based on largely subjective criteria which are not stable over time, as templates of taste and popular appeal are in a constant state of flux. However, the authors have taken particular care to ensure that the sample does not merely reflect the taste range and aesthetic preoccupations of a chosen elite, but features as wide a range of films as possible in terms of genre, form, themes and audience appeal. Finally, in order to obtain a more objective sense of the cultural make-up of UK cinema over the period, a separate random sample of 200 films was also compiled (see next appendix). The films are listed in chronological order. • The North of England in British Wartime Film, 1941 to 1946. Alan
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by CLoK The North of England in British Wartime Film, 1941 to 1946. Alan Hughes, University of Central Lancashire The North of England is a place-myth as much as a material reality. Conceptually it exists as the location where the economic, political, sociological, as well as climatological and geomorphological, phenomena particular to the region are reified into a set of socio-cultural qualities that serve to define it as different to conceptualisations of England and ‘Englishness’. Whilst the abstract nature of such a construction means that the geographical boundaries of the North are implicitly ill-defined, for ease of reference, and to maintain objectivity in defining individual texts as Northern films, this paper will adhere to the notion of a ‘seven county North’ (i.e. the pre-1974 counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, County Durham, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Cheshire) that is increasingly being used as the geographical template for the North of England within social and cultural history.1 The British film industry in 1941 As 1940 drew to a close in Britain any memories of the phoney war of the spring of that year were likely to seem but distant recollections of a bygone age long dispersed by the brutal realities of the conflict. Outside of the immediate theatres of conflict the domestic industries that had catered for the demands of an increasingly affluent and consuming population were orientated towards the needs of a war economy as plant, machinery, and labour shifted into war production.

  • Derek Jarman Sebastiane
©Jack Fritscher, Ph.D. Pre-Publication Web Posting 191 DEREK JARMAN SEBASTIANE Derek Jarman, the British painter and set designer and filmmaker and diarist, said about the Titanic 1970s, before the iceberg of AIDS: “It’s no wonder that a generation in reaction [to homopho- bia before Stonewall] should generate an orgy [the 1970s] which came as an antidote to repression.” Derek knew decadence. And its cause. He was a gay saint rightly canonized, literally, by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. As editor of Drummer, I featured his work to honor his talent. If only, like his rival Robert Mapplethorpe, he had shot a Drummer cover as did director Fred Halsted whose S&M films LA Plays Itself and Sex Garage are in the Museum of Modern Art. One problem: in the 1970s, England was farther away than it is now, and Drummer was lucky to get five photographs from Sebastiane.
