IX This page intentionally left blank PARTI Introduction This page intentionally left blank I Editor's Introduction Leo Groarke Restructuring and its effects surround us. The driver of the Airways Transit van on a recent trip from the airport told me that he had, one- and-a-half years earlier, been the CEO of a publishing company that employed sixty people. "For fourteen years I gave one hundred and fifty percent. I put on overalls and helped in the stockroom when they could not keep up with orders. I knew the families of all my workers." One day he was told the company was restructuring. He was replaced by a new CEO who had no experience in publishing and was given three months' salary as a severance package. During the six months that fol- lowed he tried to adjust to life without his six-figure salary. In the process, he lost his house, his wife divorced him, and he searched unsuccessfully for a new position. His participation in a government retraining plan was cancelled because of technicalities surrounding his eligibility. After a great deal of effort on his part the eligibility issue was resolved, but by then the program had ceased to operate. A year and a half after losing his position, he drives airport vans for minimum wage and lives in a condo which he shares with his twenty-two-year-old son—a young man trained in archi- tectural design who works as a manual labourer in two part-time jobs. This is a very personal snapshot of the negative side of a new econ- omy that is characterized by the restructuring of private and public enter- prise, by the consequences of this restructuring, and by the new eco- nomic order it creates. Within this new economy, decisions to downsize, lay-offs, government cutbacks, and the closing or merger of businesses, hospitals, boards of education, schools, and health care services are the order of the day. The fundamental changes this implies have been fuelled by many forces: most obviously, by technological "advances" which continually reduce the need for human workers, by government attempts to eliminate their budget deficits and reduce their debt load, 3 4 The Ethics of the New Economy and by the competitive pressures of a globalized economy. The new economy which results is characterized by change rather than stability, by continual restructuring, by ever-increasing competition in the mar- ketplace, and by a social safety net that is increasingly threadbare. Despite its human costs, opinions about restructuring and the econ- omy it produces are divided. Many argue that economic sacrifices are necessary—if bitter—medicine for an ailing economy that is behind the times and too frequently characterized by inefficiencies and outmoded modes of operation. This economy needs, such commentators argue, to be overhauled in order to create more responsible government, more competitive private enterprise, and a brighter future with more and bet- ter jobs. Their opponents answer by decrying restructuring and its effects, and by arguing that restructuring serves primarily as a way to widen the gap between the rich and poor. The radically divergent views of restructuring this debate implies have sparked many heated exchanges in the popular press but, peculiarly, rel- atively little discussion among those who study ethics and the ethical issues that arise in business, health,

Thank you. iv OCCURRENT CONTRACTARIANISM: A Preference-Based Ethical Theory ABSTRACT There is a problem within contractarian ethics that I wish to resolve. It concerns individual preferences. Contractarianism holds that morality, properly conceived, can satisfy individual preferences and interests better than amorality or immorality. What is unclear, however, is whether these preferences are those individuals actually hold or those that they should hold. The goal of my thesis is to investigate this question. I introduce a version of contractarian ethics that relies on individual preferences in a manner more stringent than has been in the literature to date. "Occurrent contractarianism," as I have called it, is rooted in our social- psychological state. Given the characteristics we have, and given the social situation in which we are embedded, the best resolve we have of furthering our individually defined preferences is to adopt and adhere to a moral system.

    A newsletter from St. F. X.’s Department of Philosophy Spring 2004 Welcome to the first issue of the Philosophy Department’s Newsletter. In it, we hope to give readers an idea about the Philosophy programme at St FX, some information on the teaching and research interests of the professors in the Department, and a list of the courses we are offering next year. Philosophy at StFX is one of the more popular departments in the Faculty of Arts. Our professors are noted for their teaching in the annual review of universities in Macleans, and many are known, internationally, for their research. In fact, in the last external review of the Department (2002), we were described as “almost certainly the best small Department [of Philosophy] in the country.” The Philosophy Department is committed to teaching and to providing students with a broad range of courses that do not compromise on standards. It’s easy to see why philosophy graduates do so well on LSAT, GMAT and GRE tests (see page 4 for more). Our second and third year courses cover Ethics - theoretical and applied - philosophy of science, of literature, of religion, and of human nature, as well as all of the major periods in the history of philosophy. But the Philosophy Department is actively involved in research as well. A third of the department has received grants from the SSHRC – Canada’s leading research council on the humanities - and it publishes, on average, one book, two edited books, and 17 scholarly papers each year.     Philosophical Genres and Literary Forms: A Mildly Polemical Introduction Jonathan Lavery Philosophy and Contemporary Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University (Brantford) The essays collected in this special issue of Poetics Today examine philo- sophical genres with illustrations from important and representative texts. Since the inception of Western philosophy, myriad expository styles and literary forms have been used there with extraordinary subtlety in address- ing the conceptual problems within the tradition. Aphorisms, dialogues, epistles, autobiographies, essays, systematic treatises, and commentaries— to name only some of the most obvious examples—should be familiar to both casual and serious readers. Philosophers have exercised a great deal of ingenuity in their experiments with these and other genres. Still, it is fair to say that the amount of scholarly research on philosophical genres is not commensurate with either the diversity of genres that have been used in the tradition or with the vast amount of research on other dimensions of these texts, including, for example, philological work on the provenance and integrity of source manuscripts, historical work on intellectual influences upon the authors, or analytical work on the logical cogency of individual arguments. In short, there has been little elucidation of the distinctive virtues and limitations implicit in the different genres.
