Trekking in Everest Base Camp

Everest Base Camp Trek Length: 12 days (plus 3 days in Kathmandu) Cost: £2850 per person (subject to change depending on currency change)

The Everest Base Camp Trek is the trek to the top of the world. Ranging from 2610m (Phakding) to 5550m (Kala Patthar), this trek is best way to see some of the most famous Himalayan peaks: Ama Damblam, , , and of course, .

The trek lasts for 11-12 days depending on the weather and how busy the route is. The route itself is not difficult and this trek is suitable for people of all ages, abilities, and all levels of previous trekking experience.

Below is a sample itinerary for a trek to Everest Base Camp. Naturally, all itineraries are subject to change depending on weather conditions and the individuals involved.

EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK (11-12 days)

Day From/To Length Details 1 Flight from Kathmandu to 30 mins The first day’s trek will take you down 130m and is a gentle (2840m). introductory day to your trek.

Trek to Phakding (2610m). 3-4 hours On arrival at Lukla you will have breakfast in a local lodge, after which you will push on towards Phakding. You will eat lunch at your lodge after arriving in Phakding.

Lukla Airport (2840m) 2 Phakding (2610m) to 6 hours Day two will take you to ‘The Gateway to Everest’ – Namche (3440m). Bazaar. It is the most modern village on the route, complete with internet cafes, banks, and shops.

The first half of the walk is a relatively gentle one to Jorsale, just inside the Sagarmatha National Park boundary. Here you will have lunch.

After lunch the walk will take you across the Larja Bridge and up to Namche Bazaar. If it is a clear day, you may well get your first view of Everest on the way up to Namche.

3 Acclimatization day 3-4 hours Day three will be your first acclimatization day. On this day you will walk to Syangboche and Khumjung. Walk to Syangboche Syangboche is the home of what used to be the highest (3720m) and Khumjung airport in the world. Small planes still fly in and out of (3780m). Syangboche regularly. Khumjung is a village famous for its monastery – the Khumjung Gompa. This monastery houses what some believe to be a Yeti skull, which you can see for a small donation. Khumjung is also home to a school build by Sir Edmund Hilary.

On a clear day, this walk will give you good views of Thamserku (6618m).

4 Namche Bazaar (3440m) to 6 hours Day four will take you north to , home of the Tengboche oldest monastery in the Everest region. The route will give (3860m)/Deboche (3820m). excellent mountain views on a clear day, including Ama Dabam, Lhotse Shar, Thamserku, and Lhotse.

You will stop for lunch by the river in Phungi Thanga before heading uphill to Tengboche.

5 Tengboche (3860m) to 5 hours The walk to Dingboche will take you straight up the valley Dingboche (4410m). past Ama Damblam (6814m). You will stop for lunch at Shomare. By this point you will have left the area in which there is enough oxygen for fully-sized trees to grow. Now the vegetation will be predominantly shrubs and bushes. This walk will also give you your first views of several glaciers, including the Churo Glacier.

6 Acclimatization day 3-4 hours For your second acclimatization day you will walk up to a glacial lake above Dingboche called Kyubo Kharka. The lake Walk to Kyubo Kharka is at the base of Amphu Gyabjen (5630m) and from here you (4700m). will also have excellent views of Ama Dablam and possibly a few more peaks further north.

7 Dingboche (4410m) to 5 hours The walk to Lobuche will take you northwest to a rest point Lobuche (4910m). at Thokla (4620m). After this there is a steep uphill section to take you through the Thokla Pass (4830m). This part of the trek will give good views of the peaks to the east including Tabuche, Cholaste, and Arakam Tse.

At the top of the Thokla Pass you will come across the impromptu memorial site for those who have died on Everest. There are many small stupas and memorials for people, or groups of people, who have lost their lives while attempting to reach the highest point on Earth.

After the Pass you will skirt the Glacier and pass Awi (5245m) all the way to Lobuche. As you will arrive in Lobuche at lunchtime, after eating you will walk up to the lip of the Khumbu Glacier just next to Lobuche. This will give you excellent views of the Glacier, which runs all the way from Thokla to Everest Base Camp. The Khumbu Glacier is also the highest glacier on Earth, with elevations ranging from 4900m to 7600m.

Thokla Pass (4830m) 8 Lobuche (4910m) to Gorak 4 hours On day eight you will continue along the edge of the Shep (5140m) Khumbu Glacier up to the highest village in the world, Gorak Shep. By this point there is no vegetation, and the landscape is entirely glacial. This can make the walk tricky in places.

Walk to Everest Base Camp 4 hours After eating lunch in Gorak Shep, you will continue on to (5364m) Everest Base Camp. At Base Camp you can see large boulders that have been signed by visitors and have had various flags hung on them. Depending on the season, you may also get to see some expedition tents.

9 Climb peak at Kala Patthar 4-5 hours On day nine you will get up at 4am and climb the peak to the (5550m). east called Kala Patthar. This will most likely be the high point of your trek, both literally and metaphorically. If the weather is clear, you will be able to see the sun rise over the and you will be given excellent views of Mount Everest and the other mountains around it, including Lhotse, Lhotse Shar Nuptse, and Ama Damblam.

Descend to Pheriche 7 hours Once you have returned to Gorak Shep and had breakfast, (4240m). you will begin your descent and walk down to Pheriche, stopping for lunch in Lobuche. Descending is considered by most people to be more difficult than ascending, so be prepared to take your time.

10 Pheriche (4240m) to 6-7 hours The next day you will continue your descent back down to Namche Bazaar (3440m). Namche Bazaar. On this day you will stop for lunch at Deboche/Tengboche.

11 Namche Bazaar (3440m) to 7-8 hours On day eleven the descent will take you all the way back Lukla (2840m). down to Lukla, where you first landed. On this day you will stop for lunch at Phakding.

12 Lukla to Kathmandu 30 mins On this day you will return by plane to Kathmandu.

AS DISCUSSED IN THE TRIP MEETING OR ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS THE EBC TREK IS NOT DIFFICULT, BUT YOU MUST START BUILDING YOUR FITNESS LEVELS 2/3 TIMES PER WEEK FROM JANUARY 2021 IF NECESSARY TO BE ABLE TO COMFORABLY WALK 6-8 HRS PER DAY CARRYING A RUCKSACK WEIGHING APPROX 8-10KG. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING WALKING POLES AND INCREASING YOUR INTAKE OF WATER AND REDUCING YOUR INTAKE OF ALCOHOL PRIOR AND DURING THE TRIP.

In consideration of Adventure Aid (hereinafter known as the organiser) arranging a volunteer trip on my behalf from 15th January 2022 to 2nd February 2022 for the Everest Base Camp trek

I hereby agree to the following:

Participation and Potential Dangers

By participation in this trip, made under the arrangements of Adventure Aid (“the Organiser”) I acknowledge the danger of any adventure travel activity, including but not limited to; dangers in general road driving, driving on private roads, food poisoning or related illness, animal-borne tropical diseases, travelling along mountainous roads, high altitude leading to High Altitude Sickness, forces of nature, civil unrest, terrorism, travel across water by hovercraft, ferry or similar vessel, accident or illness without means for rapid evacuation or medical facilities, earthquakes, tsunamis and random acts of violence, or areas inadequate or lacking law enforcement.

I understand that my personal safety cannot be guaranteed, and I accept the risks involved in living and traveling in conditions made dangerous by disease and any and all other hazards. I represent to the Organiser that I have no physical, mental or emotional conditions that would put either myself or others at risk in the above circumstances, and I agree see my doctor prior to the trip and authorise the release of any medical, psychological or other information to the Organiser if it so requests.

Medical Attention / Conditions

In a situation where I require urgent medical attention due to illness or injury but am unable to make such decisions for myself, I willingly give the Organiser the authority to make such decisions on my behalf (unless I give specific alternative instructions prior to departure).

Rules / Regulations and Indemnity

I understand that all the applicable rules, trek preparation guidelines, instructions and policies of The Organiser must be followed and that the responsibility for my personal safety remains with me. I further undertake and agree to remove myself from participation in the trip if I sense or observe any unusual hazard or unsafe condition, or if, at any time, I feel unable or unfit to safely continue for any reason.

I agree to indemnify the organiser, its trustees, agents, employees, licensees and assignees, and the event sponsor from all claims, demands, or expenses as a result of my breaching this Waiver or guidelines for the trip, my negligence or otherwise arising out of my participation in the trip.

Personal Injury / Risk / Death

I understand that in the event of my suffering any personal injury or death (other than personal injury or death caused by the Organiser's negligence) or any damage being caused to any property of mine, that I will not bring any action or other proceedings against the Organiser, its trustees, agents, employees, licensees or assignees, event sponsors, or any company or persons associated with the trip.

I acknowledge that there exists inherent risk in participating in any trip as arranged by the Organiser. The organiser will use its reasonable endeavours to ensure that the other participants abide by these rules but cannot guarantee that this will be done.

Except for death or personal injury caused by the Organiser's negligence, which is not excluded or limited by anything in this waiver, Adventure Aid, its trustees and employees exclude all liability in relation to my participation in the trip.

I accept the charity’s decision in any dispute or discussion over application of the rules prevails.

I understand that once flights are booked for the trip that the minimum donation required of £2850 is due in full eight weeks before departure and is not refundable. It will be up to the individual to try and sell their place and they remain full liable for the total cost of the EBC trek.
