After the homily the or will go back to his seat and there will be a short period of silence. Then the priest stands and say “I believe…” and the congregation responds with the remainder of the Creed (The Latin word Credo means I believe). The Creed is structured around our profession of faith in the Holy Trinity; first about the Father, then Jesus, and finally the Holy Spirit, and at the very end a short piece about the Church, Baptism, and the promise of salva- tion. The stress is put on each of the Persons, but that they are one, united God. The Creed is said by everyone together to express each individual’s personal affirmation of everything said (which some casual Christmas and Easter Catholics who say these truths by rote need to reexamine and take as seriously as they should be taken), but also of the faith of the whole common Church. It is a prayer that is easy to say when in a large crowd, but many sincere every-Sunday Catholics likely struggle to say it outside of the context of Mass. Let it be a challenge for each of us to memorize it completely if we haven’t already.

The Creed in its current form is known as the Nicene Creed, created in the year 325 and edited in 381 at the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople respectively. There has been controversy between the Church of the West and the Churches of the East over the later addition of the Filioque, but besides that this is the same Creed we have had for 1700 years. But it actually goes back even further than that. The Nicene Creed is a fleshed out version of an earlier creed, the Apostles’ Creed. As its name suggests, it has been around since the beginning of Christianity. It consists of twelve different state- ments about the Father, the Lord, the Holy Spirit, or the Church, and it is thought that each of the Twelve Apostles con- tributed one statement each.

The Nicene Creed is recited at all Sunday Mass and on Solemnities (GIRM no. 68). It may be omitted when another pro- fession of Faith is used at Mass, such as the renewal of Baptismal promises or during the Scrutinies for the catechumens. The Apostles Creed may optionally be used in place of the Nicene Creed at Masses with children (DMC no. 49) and dur- ing the Advent and Easter seasons (cf. 2002 ed. Missale Romanum).

To support her family, Mary worked as a clerk and then later as governess at the estate of her aunt and uncle. Two years later she took up a teaching job and moved to the city of Porland in Victoria. There she founded the Bay View House Seminary for Young Ladies. At the invitation of a priest named Fr. Woods, Mary opened a Catholic school in Penola. She was joined by other women and the group soon began to wear black and took vows becoming the Sisters of St. of the Sacred Heart. This new order be- lieved in divine providence and its members were forbidden to own any possessions. Monday, August 9: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross— St. Theresa was born as on Oct. 12, 1891 in Breslaw, . Around 14 years of age, she abandoned her Jewish faith and stopped believing in God. After reading a book about St. Teresa of Avila, she became interested in Catholicism, and was baptized in 1922. Twelve years later, in 1934, she entered the Carmelite order and took the name “Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.” Teresa taught in a Dominican school in Germany before being forced to secretly de- part for Echt in the in 1938 because of Nazi attacks against people of Jewish descent. Then the Nazis in- vaded the Netherlands in 1940. After Dutch bishops spoke out against the Nazis, they set out on murdering any Jew who become a Christian. Teresa and her sister Rosa were sent to Auschwitz, where they both died in the gas chambers.

Tuesday, August 10: St. Lawrence—Martyr St. Lawrence was born Dec. 31, 225. When St. Sixtus II ascended to the papacy, he ordained Lawrence as one of the first seven deacons of . Lawrence was placed in charge of the finances of the Church, as well as distribution of money to the poor. He was present at the martyrdom of St. Sixtus II, who asked him to sell of the Church’s wealth and give it away to the poor, which he did. Lawrence was then ordered by the Prefect of Rome to hand over the Church’s treasures. He gathered up the poor people, brought them to the Prefect, and replied “Here are the treasures of the Church.” Lawrence was condemned to a public execution of being slowly burned over a gridiron. Many who witnessed the execution were converted, including several Roman senators who gave Lawrence’s remains a proper burial.

Wednesday, August 11: St. Clare—Virgin St. Clare was born in 1194 in Assisi, Italy. As a young child, she desired to dedicate her life to Christ. When she was 18, she heard St. Francis preach, and sought his assistance. On Mar. 18, 1212, Clare was given the penitential habit and had her hair cut off. St. Francis sent her to live in a convent of the Benedictine nuns at San Paulo. When her family tried to bring her home, St. Francis sent her to a monastery. Clare was eventually joined by her sister, Catarina, who took the name Agatha. Other women began to join them, and the Poor Claires was formed from this group. The nuns lived a life of mortifications, strong fasting, manual labor, wore no shoes, and maintained silence most of the day. One day, when the army of Frederick II tried to invade, Clare placed the monstrance in a window, and the army fled.

Thursday, August 12: Bl. Karl Leisner—Priest and Martyr Bl. Karl Leisner was born in Planegg, Germany on February 28, 1915. In 1934 he entered the seminary to be- come a priest. As a seminarian, Karl was placed in charge of the Catholic Boys Movement, an alternative to the state-sponsored Hitler Youth. In this role he came under the suspicion of the and was forced by the re- gime to serve six months of agricultural labor. He was later put in prison and sent to the Sachsenhausen and Da- chau concentration camps. Karl had developed tuberculosis and his condition was worsening. He was secretly ordained a priest in December 1944 by Bishop Piguet, who was also imprisoned by the Nazis. Karl passed away a year later shortly after being freed from Dachau due to his deteriorated condition from his imprisonment. Friday, August 13: Bl. Otto Neururer—Priest and Martyr Bl. Otto Neururer was born to a peasant family in Piller, Austria-Hungary on March 25, 1882. He attended minor seminary in 1895 and then continued his studies at the seminary of Bressanone where he was ordained a priest in 1907. The Nazis invaded Austria-Hungary in 1938. During the course of his pastoral ministry, he encouraged a woman in his parish not to marry a divorced man engaginf in a life of sin. The man became enraged, and turned Otto in to the Nazi authorities for “slander to the detriment of German marriage.” On December 15, 1938 he was arrested and imprisoned before being sent to Dachau and later to Buchenwald. While at the Buchenwald concentration camp he secretly performed . This was discovered by the guards and he was subjected to 34 hours of torture before passing away on May 30, 1940.

Saturday, August 14: St. —Martyr St. Maximilian Kolbe was born as Raymund Kolbe on January 8, 1894, in . He had a vision of the Blessed Mother when he was twelve years of age, in which Our Lady presented him with two crowns, one white and one red, indicating that he would re- main pure and be martyred. A year after this vision, Maximilian joined the Conventual Franciscans. After witnessing opposition to the pope, he formed the Militia Immaculata to pray for the conversion of sinners and those attacking the Church. In 1918, he be- came a priest, and traveled through Poland to spread devotion to Our Lady. He also went on mission trips to and . After Germany invaded Poland, Maximilian regularly housed Jews in his monastery. He was arrested February 17, 1941, and ended up at Auschwitz. When some men were sentenced to death by starvation, Maximilian offered to die in their place. He passed away two weeks later from starvation and dehydration. LIVESTREAMS LECTOR SCHEDULE
