KATHY GARVER Most fondly remembered for her starring role as “Cissy” in the long-running CBS international television hit, Family Affair, Kathy Garver has also garnered critical acclaim in movies, stage, radio, voice-over animation, and audio book narration. Kathy was born on December 13 in Long Beach, California to Hayes and Rosemary Garver joining her sister, Beverly, and brothers, Hayes, Jr. and Lance. Her acting career in television began when she was just seven years old. When she was nine, Hollywood legendary director Cecil B. DeMille was one of the first to recognize Kathy’s distinct talents. Originally hired for a small part in the epic motion picture, The Ten Commandments, Kathy was noticed by the great director who then had special scenes written into the movie to highlight the talented little girl. The award-winning movie followed her first film, The Night of the Hunter, directed by Academy Award winner, Charles Laughton. During her teenage years, she added radio and stage to her burgeoning film and television career. Kathy was a freshman majoring in speech at UCLA when she was tested for a television series entitled Family Affair (1966-1971). Kathy, deemed perfect to star as “Cissy” with Brian Keith as “Uncle Bill” and Sebastian Cabot as “Mr. French,” starred for five years in one of the warmest and most enduring series of the 1960’s and 1970’s. With Anissa Jones as “Buffy” and Johnny Whitaker as “Jody”, the show continues to be popular today pleasing old and new audiences world-wide as a true classic. Filming Family Affair demanded much from Kathy: “Brian Keith only worked for about half the production schedule so the rest of us would have to film scenes from as many as six different episodes in one day,” she recalls.

  • Phd Thesis Noel Brown
1 Hollywood, the family audience and the family film, 1930-2010 Noel Brown Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University. June 2010 2 Abstract This thesis is the first in-depth, historical study of Hollywood’s relationship with the ‘family audience’ and ‘family film’. Since the 1970s, Hollywood family films have been the most lucrative screen entertainments in the world, and despite their relatively- unexplored status in academic film criticism and history, I will argue that the format is centrally important in understanding mainstream Hollywood cinema. How have ‘family films’ become so globally dominant? One answer is that Hollywood’s international power facilitates the global proliferation of its products, but this explanation, in isolation, is insufficient. I will argue that Hollywood family films are designed to transcend normative barriers of age, gender, race, culture and even taste; they target the widest possible audiences to maximise commercial returns, trying to please as many people, and offend as few, as possible. This they achieve through a combination of ideological populism, emotional stimulation, impressive spectacle, and the calculated minimisation of potentially objectionable elements, such as sex, violence, and excessive socio-cultural specificity. Initially, the audience for family films was predominantly domestic, but with the increasing spending power of international audiences, family films are now formulated on the belief that no market is inaccessible. For this reason, they are inextricably linked with Hollywood – the only film industry in the world with the resources and distribution capacity to address a truly global mass audience.

  • Red Feather Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, Spring 2018 a Touch of Color
A Touch of Color: Family-Friendly Integration in Late 1960s TV by Caryn Murphy After Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in April of 1968, a California woman named Harriet Glickman wrote to Charles Schulz and asked him to consider adding “Negro children” to his popular Peanuts comic strip.1 Schulz initially declined, indicating that he had nothing to gain from such an addition; he would almost certainly be criticized for offering a token representation of black identity. Glickman followed up with another letter, claiming that the fact of the representation itself would be its significance. The Peanuts universe needn’t be transformed into a didactic space; the presence of black characters would be enough. Schulz acquiesced and introduced “Franklin” in the summer of 1968. Although the new character was black, he did not discuss race and racial difference. He became a member of the Peanuts gang who was often present, but rarely foregrounded in the gang’s adventures. As the fiftieth anniversary of Franklin’s introduction approached, the New York Times noted that the representation served to depict “friendship between black and white children as utterly normal.”2 This article focuses on a similar strategy of integration that was utilized in family- friendly television programming at this same time. As broadcast networks sought to integrate prime-time programming, a trend emerged as black children joined white children in the narrative universes of Gentle Ben, Mayberry R.F.D., and Family Affair. I argue that these programs were integrated with “token” black characters, and I analyze how the complicated business of integrated television was simplified through “colorblind” representations.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF FILM-VIDEO AND MEDIA STUDIES HAS CLASSIC TV GONE OUT OF STYLE? MEGAN KATHLEEN O‘HARA Spring 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Finance with honors in Media Studies Reviewed and approved* by the following: Jeanne Lynn Hall Associate Professor of Communications Thesis Supervisor and Honors Adviser Matthew P. McAllister Professor of Communications Faculty Reader * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT From The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, The Donna Reed Show, and Leave It to Beaver to Roseanne, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Married…with Children, the television and its sitcom families have been a part of our lives from TV's inception. Although sixty years have passed since TV's modest beginnings, through the power of technology, reruns, and networks such as TV Land, we, the modern viewing public, have a glimpse into the world of classic TV. A world filmed entirely in black and white, it gives us insight into the TV world of yesteryear. It also gives us the chance to compare that world with today's world filmed in spectacular Technicolor. It's easy to see that black and white versus color isn't the only difference between classic TV and modern programming. Turn on the TV during primetime tonight. Notice anything? Look in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Most shows today come with a rating, warning parents of violence, language, sex, and drugs that may deem the program unsuitable for younger viewers.
