Tejocote (Crataegus mexicana), a small pome crab-apple-like fruit, is becoming economically important in California with increasing production, so consideration of diseases that hinder the yield is important. Diseased trees of tejocote were observed in four orchards of Riverside and San Diego Counties of California.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated. 2 Territorial Practices: an Anthropology of Geographic Orders and Imaginations in the Sierra Mixe 3 Territorial Practices: an Anthropology of Geographic Orders and Imaginations in the Sierra Mixe Acknowledgments This thesis would not have been possible without the help and generosity of a large number of people in Oaxaca, Mexico City and London. In London I benefited from the kind and attentive help of Dr. Nanneke Redclift, my thesis supervisor. She not only advice me before and after returning from the field, but provided me with a wonderful space of intellectual liberty. I thank her thorough reading of countless versions of the thesis and for all the support received during my stay at UCL. I would also like to express my gratitude to my friends and fellow PhD students at the Department of Anthropology for their comments, intellectual encouragement and especially, for sharing the joys and miseries of writing a doctoral thesis. Pollack Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Anthropology University of Washington Abstract Documenting and Contextualizing Pjiekakjoo Knowledge through a Collaborative Research Project Elda Miriam Aldasoro Maya Chair of the Supervisory Committee Emeritus Professor Eugene Hunn University of Washington The Pjiekakjoo (Tlahuica) people and their culture have managed to adapt to the globalized world. They have developed a deep knowledge-practice-belief system (Traditional Environmental Knowledge (TEK) or Contemporary Indigenous Knowledges (CIK)) that is part of the biocultural diversity of the region in which they live. This dissertation describes the economic, social and political context of the Pjiekakjoo, to contextualize the Pjiekakjoo CIK, including information on their land tenure struggles, their fight against illegal logging and the policies governing the Zempoala Lagoons National Park that is part of their territory. The collaborative research on which this dissertation draws, based on a dialogue of knowledges and heavily influenced by the ideas of Paolo Freire, fully recognized Indigenous people as subjects. Through participant observation, interviews and workshops we documented the names, uses, myth, beliefs and stories that the Pjiekakjoo people give to an extensive variety of organisms: mushrooms, invertebrates, vertebrates and the most important useful plants. Basic knowledge about the milpa and corn was also documented. Through the analysis of the information gathered it is clear that the relation of the Pjiekakjoo with other living beings is far from solely utilitarian in nature.

  • Assessments of Rhagoletis Pomonella (Diptera: Tephritidae) Infestation Of
    J. ENTOMOL. SOC. BRIT. COLUMBIA 116, DECEMBER 2019 !40 Assessments of Rhagoletis pomonella (Diptera: Tephritidae) infestation of temperate, tropical, and subtropical fruit in the field and laboratory in Washington State, U.S. W. L. Y E E1 AND R. B. G O U G H N O U R2 ABSTRACT To understand the likelihood of any risk of apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae), to domestic and foreign fruit export markets, knowledge of its host plant use is needed. Here, assessments of R. pomonella infestation of temperate, tropical, and subtropical fruit were made in the field and laboratory in Washington State, U.S. In field surveys in 2010– 2017 in central Washington, 6.7% of Crataegus douglasii and 6.1% of feral Malus domestica trees (both temperate plants) in fly-managed (insecticide- treated) sites were infested by larvae. In unmanaged sites, 54.1% of C. douglasii and 16.3% of feral M. domestica tree samples were infested. In field surveys of 36 types of temperate fruit in 2015–2018 in southwestern Washington, new host records for R. pomonella were one species and three hybrids of Crataegus, as well as Prunus domestica subsp. syriaca – all of which produced adult flies. In addition, Prunus avium was a new host record for Washington State, producing one adult fly. Prunus armeniaca x Prunus salicina and Vitis vinifera exposed to flies in the laboratory produced adult flies. Of 37 types of tropical and subtropical fruit hung in fly-infested M. domestica trees in southwestern Washington, only Mangifera indica produced puparia. Out of nine tropical and subtropical fruit types in laboratory tests, Musa acuminata x balbisiana produced puparia but no adult flies.

PÉREZ-ORTEGA, Antonio H. MÉNDEZ-SANTIAGO, Raúl NIETO-ANGEL, Leszek S. JANKIEWICZ1* Departamento de Fitotecnia, Universidad Autónoma Chapingo, 56230 Chapingo, Estado de México, México. 1Present address: Research Institute of Horticulture, Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland Received: May 20, 2013; Accepted: July 1, 2013 ABSTRACT The architecture of the tejocote (pronounciation: tehocote) – a Mexican fruit trees is described. There is a great morphological diversity among the tejocote clones growing in Germplasm Bank of the Autonomic University of Chapingo, Mexico. The common character of all hawthorns in this bank is that the inflorescence axis dies after shedding the reproductive parts (flowers or fruits) but remains on the tree, and the growth continues from the bud situated below the dead part. The growth and ramification habit were described as long shoots showing marked apical dominance and as the complex of shoots showing week apical dominance. The non-pruned trees of tejocote clones used as fruit trees form strong natural crown. The architecture of it is similar to the “Troll’s model” of Hallé and Oldeman (1970). Metamor- phosis and reiteration are relatively frequent. The inflorescence structure was described, as well as the types of thorns in clones, which have thorns. Tejocote hawthorn may probably be an interesting fruit tree for countries with warm climate and a long dry period. It is also well adapted to shallow calcareous soils. Key words: edible hawthorns.
