Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

  • THE COLLECTED POEMS of HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam
1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.

NOBODY AND SOMEBODY: AN INTRODUCTION AND CRITICAL EDITION David L. Hay A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR Of PHILOSOPHY December 1970 Approved by Doctoral Committee Advisor Department of English BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY LlBRARi ABSTRACT Nobody and Somebody, an anonymous English history play, has received little critical attention since it was first printed in l606. Most critics who have examined the work have commented on its weaknesses in characteri zation or poetic development, or have simply noted that it is a fusion of the forms of the history play and the morality play. This study, however, examined the play in light of Irving Ribner’s standard definition of the genre, and found Nobody and Somebody to be unconventional in that the clear position of order and control that character izes the conclusions of most English history plays is here lacking. The playwright has consciously and artistically altered his sources, established characters, developed imagery, and juxtaposed scenes to emphasize the disorder that exists throughout the play. In the final scene he has brought the two plots of the play together and has created the potential for order and reconciliation. But that order is never actualized, as the problems of disorder are conveniently ignored by those characters responsible for them or responsible for their correction. The author has thus written an unconventional play that stresses the continuing disorder of the world rather than the clear reestablishment of order that is normally stressed in the genre.

Eric Harris’s Journal Transcribed and annotated by Peter Langman, Ph.D. This transcription has corrected Eric’s writing to some extent in terms of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. The correction offers two benefits. First, it makes the text easier to read. Second, the corrected spelling is an asset for anyone who wishes to search for a particular word. Though Eric’s writing is usually legible, occasional words are noted as illegible or are tran- scribed with a question mark following to indicate a lack of certainty. The parenthetical phrases are Eric’s; words in brackets are mine. Note that Eric dated his entries at the end, whereas Dylan dated them at the beginning. The numbers in the left column refer to the pages in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s OfficeJCSO ( ) Columbine documents. This article documents the diffusion of plea bargaining and other mech- All rights reserved anisms to reach criminal convictions without a trial and argues that their spread implies what this article terms an administratization of criminal con- victions in many corners of the world. Criminal convictions have been ad- ministratized in two ways: (a) Trial-avoiding mechanisms have given a larger role to nonjudicature, administrative officials in the determination of who gets convicted and for which crimes, and (b) these decisions are made in proceedings that do not include a trial with its attached defendants’ rights. The article also proposes a way this phenomenon could be quantitatively measured by articulating the rate of administratization of criminal convic- tions, a metric to allow for comparison among different jurisdictions. The article then presents cross-national data from 26 jurisdictions on their rate of administratization of criminal convictions and different hypotheses that may help explain variation across jurisdictions on this rate. 1.1 CR04CH01_Langer ARjats.cls May 12, 2020 8:1 INTRODUCTION Plea bargaining and related mechanisms have been spreading around the world in the past few decades (Fair Trials 2017, Langer 2004, Thaman 2010b, Turner 2009).

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Bottom 4.1.210-229 [Waking up.] When my cue comes, call me, and I will answer. My next is “Most fair Pyramus.” Hey-ho! Peter Quince! Flute the bellows-mender! Snout the tinker! Starveling! God’s my life! Stolen hence and left me asleep! I have had a most rare vision. I have had a dream past the wit of man to say what dream it was. Man is but an ass if he go about to expound this dream. Methought I was—there is no man can tell what. Methought I was and methought I had—but man is but a patched fool if he will offer to say what methought I had. The eye of man hath not heard, the ear of man hath not seen, man’s hand is not able to taste, his tongue to conceive, nor his heart to report what my dream was. I will get Peter Quince to write a ballad of this dream. It shall be called “Bottom’s Dream” because it hath no bottom; and I will sing it in the latter end of a play, before the Duke. Peradventure, to make it the more gracious, I shall sing it at her death. 1 A Midsummer Night’s Dream Bottom [As Pyramus] 5.1.291-302, 306-316 But stay! O spite! But mark, poor knight, What dreadful dole is here! Eyes, do you see! How can it be! O dainty duck! O dear! Thy mantle good— What, stained with blood? Approach, ye Furies fell! O Fates, come, come, Cut thread and thrum, Quail, crush, conclude, and quell! The barbarism of slavery THE Barbarism of Slavery [NEW EDITION—WITH A DEDICATION.] BY HON. CHARLES SUMNER. THE BARBARISM OF SLAVERY: SPEECH OF HON. CHARLES SUMNER, ON THE Bill for the Admission of Kansas as a Free State, In the United States Senate, June 4, 1860. NEW EDITION—WITH A DEDICATION. MR. MADISON THOUGHT IT WRONG TO ADMIT IN THE CONSTITUTION THE IDEA OF PROPERTY IN MAN.—Debates in the Federal Convention, 25th August, 1787. PUBLISHED BY THE YOUNG MEN'S REPUBLICAN UNION. (For Sale by John Bradburn, 49 Walker Street.) NEW-YORK, 1863. DEDICATION. To the Young Men of the United States, I dedicate this new edition of a Speech on the Barbarism of Slavery, in token of heartfelt gratitude to them for brave and patriotic service rendered in the present War for Civilization: It is now more than three years since I deemed it my duty to expose, in the Senate, the Barbarism of Slavery. This phrase, though common now, was new then. The speech was a strict and logical reply to the assumptions of Senators, asserting the “divine origin” of Slavery, its “ennobling” character, and that it was the “black marble keystone” of our national arch. Listening to these assumptions, which were of daily recurrence, I felt that they ought to be answered. And, considering their effrontery, it seemed to me that they should be answered frankly and openly by exhibiting Slavery as it really is, without reserve; careful that I should “nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice.” This I did. In that debate the issue was joined which is still pending in the Trial by Battle.
