Slow loris finds itself stranded far away from home... at Yishun carpark PHOTO: YouTube screengrabs ASIAONE Apr 30, 2016 SINGAPORE - It has a permanent look of surprise on its face, but this slow loris was probably really afraid when it found itself surrounded by a concrete jungle instead of the lush greenery she is used to. Earlier this month, officers from the Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (Acres) were notified of a slow loris stranded in a multi-storey carpark at Yishun Central. The resident who found the nocturnal animal recognised it immediately and knew that it was not in a place it belonged. One of Singapore's critically endangered creatures, slow lorises are usually found deep in the nature reserves of Singapore where they enjoy a diet of fruit, sap, nectar, bird eggs and insects. In a video uploaded on Acres' YouTube account, the slow loris can be seen perched on the ledge three storeys above ground. With thick gloves to protect himself from the the animal's strong and toxic bite, an Acres officer grabs hold of it and brings it carefully to safety. Manager of Acres' wildlife department, Kalai, told AsiaOne in a phone interview that the Sunda slow loris, which is native to Singapore, is usually not found near residential areas. So how exactly did this "young adult" female slow loris get to a carpark in Yishun Central? Kalai says there are just two possible scenarios. One possibility was that it had been sold as part of the illegal pet trade and escaped from captivity, while the other possibility was that it could have accidentally 'hitched' a ride out of the nature reserve on the car of an unsuspecting visitor.

For immediate release PRESS RELEASE PeerJ – the Journal of Life & Environmental Sciences Primates in peril: Our closest living relatives are facing an extinction crisis Researchers find that 60% of the primate species in four primate-rich countries are threatened with extinction. Non-human primates (lemurs, lorises, galagos, tarsiers, monkeys, and apes) are our closest biological relatives and offer unique insights into human evolution, biology, ecology, behavior, and the threat of emerging diseases. They are an essential component of tropical biodiversity, contributing to forest regeneration and ecosystem health, and play important roles in the livelihoods, cultures and religions of many societies. Some 60% of these primates are threatened with extinction, and therefore, we need to take immediate action. An article, coauthored by 28 internationally recognized experts on primate conservation from the U.S., Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa, and recently published in PeerJ – the Journal for Life and Environmental Sciences, calls for urgent action to protect the world’s rapidly vanishing primate populations. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN 2017) reports that while wild primates occur in 90 countries, just four—Brazil (102 primate species), Madagascar (100 species), Indonesia (48 species), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (36 species) — harbor 65% (n = 286 species) of all primate species. Slow Lorises
Slow Lorises There are five species found in South and Southeast Asia, Northeast India , Philippines Yunnan province in China, and the island of Java. The five types of Lorises are; the Sunda slow Loris, Bengal slow Loris, pygmy slow Loris, Javan slow Loris, and Bornean slow Loris. Their closest relatives are the slender lorises, pottos, false pottos, and angwantibos. They are also closely related to the galago, as well as the lemurs of Madagascar. Slow lorises have a round head, narrow snout and large eyes. Their arms and legs are almost equal in length. The hands and feet of slow lorises give them a pincer-like grip and help them grab branches for a long time. Slow lorises have a toxic (poisonous bite), a rare thing among mammals. The toxin is produced by licking a gland on their arm, and the poison mixes with its spit to activate it. Their toxic bite helps keep predators away. They also apply the spit to their fur to help protect their babies. They move slowly (that’s why they all have slow in their name) making little or no noise, and when scared, they freeze. Their only predators—apart from humans—include snakes, hawk-eagles, and orangutans, although cats, civets and sun bears may be munching on them too. We don’t know a lot about their social structure, but they are known to communicate by rubbing their scent on things making a scent marking. Males are highly territorial, which means they defend their little area of the forest and the lorises don’t have babies often.

BY NEO CHAI CHIN - FEBRUARY 13 SINGAPORE — The Agri-food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) will look into the call by a wildlife advocacy group to appeal against the sentence handed out last week to a man who illegally kept 32 wild animals, some of which are endangered. Urging the AVA to appeal against the S$41,000 fine imposed on Ong Ming Shiang, 33, the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) today (Feb 13) said the sentence was low given the circumstances, and inadequate as a general deterrent. Global trends and public policy also demand the imposition of stricter penalties, said ACRES, noting that the fine was less than 10 per cent of the maximum Ong was facing. He was also facing up to two years’ jail but was not given a custodial sentence, ACRES added. “We hope that AVA will file an appeal,” said ACRES chief executive Louis Ng. Singapore is often labelled an illegal wildlife trading hub, and “we must send out a strong message that Singapore is committed and serious in combating this illegal trade and ensure individuals involved in this trade are not only caught but given effective deterrent sentences,” he added. ACRES sent a letter dated today to the AVA containing detailed information that it said could be used to file an appeal against Ong’s sentence.

In most cases, the country of origin remains unknown and even the species can be difficult to identify from the animal’s physical appearance alone.
