I have such wonderful memories of all these ladies. Mrs June Strang would often babysit for us when there was a football cabaret or a Playcentre fundraising ball, believing that young mums should be able to have a night out now and then. In those years we never referred to our elders by their Christian names as this was very disrespectful, and one only used their name when invited to do so. Mrs Leila Leaf (always known as Nana) was my first visitor after we moved to the farm. She came with her daughter-in-law Christine and brought some (you guessed it) baking! Those times have passed and so too some of these lovely ladies. What an honour to have known them. They made www.battensbybrothers.com such a difference to new district arrivals. Hey, kids . . . Just for you! Suduko - not just for kids Sudoku is a logic puzzle that requires you to find the right place for the numbers 1-9. It gets your brain working and is a lot of fun. If you enjoy doing these puzzles there are lots more for you to find online. In typical Sudoku there is a 9 x 9 grid and the goal is to find the right placement for the numbers 1-9 in each row, column and box. All nine numbers must be used, and none can be repeated. (You could try the easiest 4 x 4 puzzle first - it just uses the numbers 1-4) Easy to start with 1. Choose a row that has some numbers filled in. 2. Each grid will already have some numbers in place, which will help you solve the rest of the puzzle. 3. Focus on one row that already has one or two numbers solved, and figure out what numbers could possibly fit in the empty Easy boxes. Medium g.a.s. At the market ... 'Another Turn Wood Products' Ian and Janiece McPherson of Ruawai have recently begun selling their high quality, handcrafted wooden bread/cheese boards and serving platters at Paparoa Farmers' Market. Once a builder, an injury meant a change of career for Ian and for the last eight months he has been turning out end- grain boards, turned bowls, pens and other inlaid items. He uses a variety of timbers – jarrah, purple heart, walnut, maple, kauri, ash and mahogany – to make the elegant, distinctive and beautifully finished products. All boards and platters are finished with food-safe oil, each one is a work of art which is a very practical gift or addition to anyone's kitchen. PP
