Pets in the Valley Well another year has raced along and is nearly over. The Vet Centre had its annual Christmas party at Ruawai this year. As vetting is a 24 hour job we had to nip out between courses and attend to a patient in the clinic. Normally it's cats or dogs that are kept in the clinic for intensive care; occasionally in Ruawai we have a calf, but for this event we had a foal! She was a week old filly, one of twins. Both were born alive, which is pretty special for horses, but the mother had rejected this one and she was being hand reared. As she had taken a turn for the worse she was in the clinic on intravenous fluids, antibiotics and a few other other remedies. Thankfully the party was very near to the clinic and so a good night was had by all - even by the on-call vets. The foal responded well to treatment and was much happier the next day. I hope you all get to spend some quality time with some of the special people (and animals) in your lives over the holiday period. Take care, Janine Paparoa Press www.paparoa.org.nz PP 15

However, few students of nature can have discovered so many new species as the man-in-the-shed. Only days after our arrival in Paparoa he discovered a new bird. The cat and I (the dog had not yet joined our menagerie) were startled by excited cries from the back deck. “Look, Look! There's a big blue and white duck in the plum tree.” (He didn't, of course, know it was a plum tree, I'm just adding that so readers may create a vividly realistic image in their mind). I rushed out, the cat strolled, and beheld this new species, subsequently classified as the Wood Duck. (Again, note to reader, it was and is a wood pigeon.) Not long after this new classification the man-in-the-shed was found, uncharacteristically, out of the shed and in the orchard, gazing avidly at a small pink and white flower. “Isn’t this pretty,” he said. “But not much use in an orchard.” Clearly not of the usual genus “I need a flower before I fruit” apple tree. This tree is now called the magic tree. And just recently, another new discovery. The labbit. Early one morning, well, early for the-man-in-the-shed, he wandered 4T-DIGGER – BOBCAT – TIP TRUCK over to his small flock and was startled to see that the ewe had obviously given birth to a creature that was seemingly Property Maintenance – Driveways – Building Sites a rabbit. On closer inspection he was relieved to note that, Stump & Tree Removal – Hole Boring – Chain Trencher although the ears were long, brown and floppy and the fur Calf Shed and Stockyard Cleaning multi coloured, it was in fact her natural offspring. The name has stuck however and labbit it remains. KAIPARA – WHANGAREI – RODNEY The man-in-the- shed is clearly homo not so very sapien. KMU SURVEYS LTD Lost 'pigeon post' MAUNGATUROTO This homing pigeon landed exhausted at Ariel Farm in the week before last. After some reseach (his leg band revealed all), it was found that on release from Hastings he was supposed to have flown to his home in Christchurch. Ken Urquhart Maybe the Kaikoura earthquake had something to do with why Licensed he fled North instead of homewards to the South? Cadastral After contact with the owner it's been decided to let him stay in Surveyor residence in Paparoa. It was going to be quite a mission to get this guy back home even though he's one of the owner's best birds. He's a dark checkered male and is used for pigeon racing. 09 431 8705 Meantime his finders will keep him and thought they should 021 161 2344 look for a companion to keep him company!
