  • Information Systems Development Methodologies and All That Jazz Lukasz Michalec and David a Banks University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia
Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology Information Systems Development Methodologies and all that Jazz Lukasz Michalec and David A Banks University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract This paper explores the relationships between jazz and the development of information systems. Similarities are drawn between music in general and information systems development method- ologies and jazz is taken as a specific focus. The idea of music as an information system in its own right is outlined. As systems development methodologies move from formal approaches to- wards more ad hoc forms, the lessons that can be learned from jazz, such as improvisation and shared meaning, may become increasingly useful. Keywords: Jazz, information system development methodologies, improvisation, socio-technical systems Introduction This paper started life as an individual student assignment for an information systems develop- ment methodologies (ISDM) Masters course. In this course a number of approaches are adopted to help students explore different aspects of systems development ‘methodology’, this term being interpreted as the underlying philosophy that influences the development process. The role of worldviews is taken as a central theme for exploring the underlying philosophies that drive the application of methods or lead to their development. The course is presented from an interpretive perspective and the learning vehicles utilised include debate sessions based around role-played expert witnesses, mapping of methodologies, repertory grids, group discussion sessions and indi- vidual conference-style papers (Banks, 2001, 2002). The individual conference-style paper is used to encourage students to develop novel perspectives on the subject matter.

  • Groove: Shared Time and Its Meanings
Feeling the groove: shared time and its meanings for three jazz trios Abstract The notion of groove is fundamental to jazz culture and the term yields a rich set of understandings for jazz musicians. Within the literature, no single perspective on groove exists and many questions remain about the relationship between timing processes, phenomenal experience and musical structures in making sense of groove. In this account, the experience and meaning of groove is theorised as emerging from two forms of sharedness. Firstly, a primary intersubjectivity that arises through the timing behaviours of the players; this could be likened to the ‘mutual tuning-in’ described in social phenomenology. It is proposed that this tuning-in is accomplished through the mechanism of entrainment. The second form of sharedness is understood as the shared temporal models, the cultural knowledge, that musicians make use of in their playing together. Methodologically, this study makes use of detailed investigation of timing data from live performances by three jazz trios, framed by in-depth, semi-structured interview material and steers a new course between existing ethnographic work on jazz and more psychologically informed studies of timing. The findings of the study point towards significant social and structural effects on the groove between players. The impact of musical role on groove and timing is demonstrated and significant temporal models, whose syntactic relations suggest musical proximity or distance, are shown to have a corresponding effect on timing within the trios. The musician’s experience of groove is discussed as it relates to the objective timing data and reveals a complex set of understandings involving temporality, consciousness and communication.

  • BIO Anne Chris (NL) Vlak Na Haar Afstuderen Aan Het Conservatorium
In 2010 verscheen het tweede album van Anne Chris, ‘Play for now’. I’m sitting with Elvin Jones and his lovely, hospitable wife Keiko Jones. This interview is with Elvin Jones the incomparable jazz drummer, composer, bandleader, and humanitarian extraordinaire. And the proceedings are being recorded by Ken Kimery, my name is Anthony Brown. Present in the room are Keiko Jones and Elvin Jones. Elvin, if we can begin by you stating your full name and when you were born. Elvin Jones: My name is Elvin Ray Jones. I was born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1927; as one half of a twin, I was a twin! (chuckles). And my twin brother, we both had whooping cough, and he didn’t survive longer than 6 months. You know, I can remember the funeral and everything. Cause I used to tell my mother, I’d say “That little casket was right there!” and I’d point it out to her and she’d say, “That’s right.” (chuckles). Anthony Brown: Wow, so you say in about 6 months—he passed at about 6 months old? Elvin Jones: Right Anthony Brown: And what was the date of that birth?
