Fernald and Helena Andreyko Editors A Joint Program of The Hudson River Foundation and The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation December 2015 ABSTRACT Eight studies were conducted within the Hudson River Estuary under the auspices of the Tibor T. Polgar Fellowship Program during 2013. Connors, PhD Dominican College Science Department [email protected] Abstract In New York State, 792 waterbodies are on the “Impaired/TMDL” list, which identifies bodies of water that might require remediation. The Sparkill Creek, placed on the list first in 2010, empties into the Hudson River. It faces issues with stormwater runoff, causing elevated levels of pathogens in the creek and decreased oxygen availability. According to published data, the levels of the indicator bacteria are 24 times higher than EPA standards. The Pocantico River, located in Westchester County, faces many of these same issues. Both were tested for microbial and coliphage loads and diversity as related to weather events. Coliform and E. coli levels were measured, with a significant increase found with a rainfall event for both sampling locations. The coliphage numbers and diversity were also significantly different with a rain event. Microbial community analyses were also completed. Of note was increased prevalence of Enterobacter and Escherichia three miles from the mouth of the creek. Future studies include a more thorough analysis of the microbial community data in both time and space, along with further testing of the fungal, bacterial, and algal populations. Hillsdale, A History by Herbert S. Parmet Hillsdale Town Historian At the time of the American Revolution, the Taconic hill country was still basically an “unbroken wilderness,” in the words of a standard history of New York State. Most of what is now the Town of Hillsdale belonged to the Van Rensselaer family, major beneficiaries of the Dutch patroon system, and much of the modern town was within the manor of Rensselaerwyck. Colonial maps show that “Renslaerwick” also included Nobletown and Spencertown. The present location of Route 23 follows the line separating Rensselaer lands from Livingston Manor. Baronial farmlands were leased to proprietors and rented to tenant farmers. Much of upstate New York, including the vast Upper Manor of the Livingstons on the west side of the Hudson, resembled the old European feudal system. With the Revolutionary War, that system was ready for change. The Hudson Valley was one of the chief cradles of American independence, especially with the major battles fought around Saratoga and Ticonderoga. Much closer to the present Hillsdale, it furnished a route for one of the more heroic achievements of the battle for independence. Colonel Henry Knox, then only 25 and a former bookseller from Boston, joined with his brother in volunteering to retrieve munitions and cannon that had been captured by Ethan Allen and, improbable as it now seems, transported them over the snowy countryside to provide vital assistance for General Washington’s troops near Boston. Supervisors Message Message Supervisor’s During the past couple of years the Town of Newburgh Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation has been upgrading the park and trail areas at Chadwick Lake. The playground area has been expanded, an all-purpose playing fi eld has been created and new-lighted basketball courts have been installed. Along with these physi- cal improvements the department has added programs and trips to accommodate all age and interest groups. If you haven’t been to Chadwick Lake Park lately, stop by and see what you’ve been missing. Enjoy a walk on the trail or a lazy day of fi shing from shore or from one of our many rental boats. You may want to rent one of our three pavilions for your next outdoor party or just bring the children to the playground and enjoy the view of the lake. ASSESSMENT OF WATERBODIES AND WATERSHED RESOURCES □□□□□ 2: 1 Introduction 2: 1.1 BACKGROUND This assessment compiles a wealth of existing information and characterizes the values and impairments of the watershed while also enhancing the reader’s awareness of the Quassaick Creek, its tributaries, and water resource issues in general. This Chapter is organized with the following sub- sections to describe the physical, ecological, and human characteristics within the Watershed. Figures and maps have been included to illustrate these features, and are interspersed throughout the report. o Section 1: Introduction o Section 2: Geological Resources o Section 3: Water Resources o Section 4: Living Resources o Section 5: Land Use and Land Cover o Section 6: Pollutant and Nutrient Loading o Section 7: Community Profile o Section 8: Summary 2: 1.2 WATERSHED OVERVIEW Quassaick Creek is one of 65 major streams and rivers that flow into the Hudson River Estuary. Hudson River Estuary tributaries vary in size from small intermittent streams that may dry-up during summer months, to larger rivers with watersheds that cover hundreds of square miles. Quassaick Creek is an average sized tributary compared to all other tributaries, draining approximately 56 square miles of land in Orange and Ulster Counties. Tributaries such as the Quassaick are interwoven components of the Hudson Estuary ecosystem and are influenced by diurnal tides (i.e., twice daily). Due to impoundments and barriers in the lower Quassaick Creek, however, tidal influence is limited to only the mouth of the Creek, east of the American Felt and Filter dam.
