This holds true for the microfinance institution that offers agri-value chain loans. “It was Cantilan Marginal Fishpond/Fish Cage Operators Association through the recommendation of Winrock International – PCCP (CANMARFOA), a group operating in the small coastal town of that we were able to avail the services of Cantilan Bank,” said Cantilan, Surigao del Sur. When CANMARFOA started in 2013, Mr. Azarcon when asked how it all started. With help from PCCP, the small group of fisherfolk had just 15 members. • Indigenous Religion, Institutions and Rituals of the Mamanwas of Caraga Region, Philippines
Asian Journal of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Vol. 1, No.1, 2013 INDIGENOUS RELIGION, INSTITUTIONS AND RITUALS OF THE MAMANWAS OF CARAGA REGION, PHILIPPINES Ramel D. Tomaquin College of Arts and Sciences Surigao del Sur State University Tandag City, Philippines Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The Mamanwas, one of the IP communities of Caraga region. Said to be one of the original settlers of Caraga and considered the Negrito group of Mindanao. Only very few literatures and studies written about them. Despite of massive acculturation of other IP groups of the region such the Agusan-Surigao Manobos, the Mansaka/Mandaya, Banwaon, Higaanon and Talaandig. The Mamanwas still on the process of integration to Philippine body-politic. It is in this scenario they were able to retain indigenous religion, institutions and rituals. Thus the study was conducted. It covers on the following sites: Mt. Manganlo in Claver, Lake Mainit in Alegria both Surigao Del Norte, Hitaob in Tandag City, Lubcon and Burgus in Cortes and Sibahay in Lanuza of Surigao Del Sur respectively. The study used ethnographic method with strict adherence of the right of pre- informed consent in accordance with RA 8371 or Indigenous Peoples Right Act of 1997. It can be deduced from the paper that despite of socio- cultural changes of the IP’s of Caraga the Mamanwas were able to retain these practices but for how long? Moreover, socio-cultural change is slowly taking place in the Mamanwa social milieu. Preservation of these worldviews is wanting as a part of national heritage and for posterity.

  • Over Land and Over Sea: Domestic Trade Frictions in the Philippines – Online Appendix
ONLINE APPENDIX Over Land and Over Sea: Domestic Trade Frictions in the Philippines Eugenia Go 28 February 2020 A.1. DATA 1. Maritime Trade by Origin and Destination The analysis is limited to a set of agricultural commodities corresponding to 101,159 monthly flows. About 5% of these exhibit highly improbable derived unit values suggesting encoding errors. More formally, provincial retail and farm gate prices are used as upper and lower bounds of unit values to check for outliers. In such cases, more weight is given to the volume record as advised by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), and values were adjusted according to the average unit price of the exports from the port of the nearest available month before and after the outlier observation. 2. Interprovince Land Trade Interprovince land trade flows were derived using Marketing Cost Structure Studies prepared by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics for a number of products in selected years. These studies identify the main supply and destination provinces for certain commodities. The difference between production and consumption of a supply province is assumed to be the amount available for export to demand provinces. The derivation of imports of a demand province is straightforward when an importing province only has one source province. In cases where a demand province sources from multiple suppliers, such as the case of the National Capital Region (NCR), the supplying provinces are weighted according to the sample proportions in the survey. For example, NCR sources onions from Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, and Nueva Ecija. Following the sample proportion of traders in each supply province, it is assumed that 26% of NCR imports came from Ilocos Norte, 34% from Pangasinan, and 39% from Nueva Ecija.

Size-structure analyses and gonad characteristics of the elongate sunset clam Gari elongata from the coastal waters of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, Philippines, was determined in this study. An opportunistic sampling approach was applied during the collection of G. elongata from the coastal waters of Brgy. Loyola and Brgy. Aquino. A total of 1437 G. elongata individuals were subjected to length-weight measurements, and gonads from five (5) individuals per sex among size classes were processed for histological characterization. The maximum total length of G. elongata recorded is 5.42 cm, way smaller than its congeners elsewhere, which is at 7.0-9.2 cm. The size- structure analysis shows that G. elongata from Brgy. Loyola exhibited negative allometric growth while those gleaned from Brgy. Aquino exhibited positive allometry indicating variation in growth dynamics. Known as a gleaning source, Barangay Loyola is abundant in G.
