For this act, she gained full support from the members of her village. In the year 1992, Bhanwari took up another issue based on the government’s campaign against child marriage. Historically, the violation of caste codes including those related to women have been subjected to punishment through the instrument of social ostracism. Dalit men and women have been encountering culturally sanctioned violence, from higher caste people in the name of ‘violating social norms’ such as temple entry, untouchability, inter- caste marriages, and so on. As a result, Dalits, especially women become easy targets for the ‘guardians of social authority’. Sadly, larger majority of Hindus remain immune to the occurrence of violence against Dalits. This article aims to address sexual violence, specifically rapes of Dalit women due to their intersectional position in the society. It explores the responses of state machinery on two case studies: Bhagana (2014) and Alwar (2019), wherein Dalit women’s rapes expose the power wielded by dominant caste communities. The paper shows the use of rape as an apparatus to humiliate a community and family in cases of land disputes involving Dalit farmers. A rear view would reveal that Indian cinema’s first decade both before and after Independence did respond quite strongly to the socialist nerves as issue of caste became a part of the popular film narratives like in Achhut Kanya (1936) and Sujata (1959). The 1960s however, saw cinema narrowing down its concerns to the socio-economic confines of the upper-middle class people. Then from the 1970s began the Amitabh era which shifted the Indian cinema into a very imaginative space with the ‘angry young man’ trope at its centre. It never occurred to any filmmaker to portray a Dalit protagonist fighting against social evils. However, the parallel or the new wave cinema did make efforts to bring the lower caste subjectivity on the big screen. The social questions like of caste-based gender violence and feudal exploitation gathered remarkable momentum through films like Shyam Benegal’s Ankur (1974). The latter part of the paper deals mainly with films belonging to the later decades of the twentieth century and portrays the change that a Dalit woman’s persona has gone through over the decades. Modern Indian women’s social movements were revitalized in the 1970s with the Mathura rape case in Maharastra. The historical context of this impactful activism is framed through analysis of four pivotal rape cases—Mathura, Bhanwari Devi, Imrana and “Nirbhaya,” otherwise known as the Delhi gang rape case. The assertive and innovative resistance of women includes such tactics as sit-down protests, marches, rallies, candle light vigils, street theatre, presentations, ad campaigns, freeze mobs, and social media. The persistent actions of Indian women continue to generate public awareness, spawn alterations of national laws, and advance the examination of patriarchal and hegemonic male centric social systems.
