Schulz Volume One: 1950-1952 Study guide written by Art Baxter Introduction America was in the throes of post-war transition in 1950. Soldiers had returned home, started families and abandoned the cities for the sprawling green lawns of newly constructed suburbia. They had sacrificed during the Great Depression and subsequent war effort and this was their reward. Television was beginning to replace the picture-less radio not to mention live theater, supper clubs and dance halls, as Americans stayed home and raised families. Despite all this “progress” an empty feeling still resided in the pit of the American soul. Psychology, that new science that had recently gone mainstream, tried to explain why. Then, Charles M. Schulz’s little filler comic strip, Peanuts, appeared in the funny pages. Schulz was born in 1922, the solitary child of a barber and his wife, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sparky, his lifelong nickname, was given to him when he was an infant, by an uncle, after the comic strip character Barney Google’s racehorse Spark Plug. Schulz had an early love and talent for drawing. He enjoyed famous comic strips like Roy Crane’s Wash Tubbs/Captain Easy (1924- 1943), the prototype of the adventure strip; E. C. Segar’s Thimble Theater (1919-1938), and its diverse cast of colorful characters going in and out rollicking adventures; and Percy Crosby’s Skippy (1925-1945) with its wise-for-his-age perceptive child protagonist. Schulz was a bright student and skipped several grades, making him the youngest and smallest in his class. -

Hacettepe Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Dergisi 2005 / Cilt: 22 Sayõ: 1 / ss. 249-258 Norman Mailer’s March: Autobiographical Concerns in Norman Mailer`s The Armies of The Night Kader YILMAZ* Abstract: As a work of literary nonfiction, Norman Mailer’s The Armies of The Night has often been studied in the context of its fictional reconstruction of the anti-war demonstration of 1967. Although some literary critics have also acknowledged the author’s highly subjective depiction of the march, this aspect of The Armies of The Night has received comparatively little critical consideration. Yet, the autobiographical narrative of this book deserves particular attention because it performs an important function in that it enables its author to personalize the march and to analyze the event from the perspective of a witness. This paper argues that Mailer aims to interpret and speculate on the significance of the march by offering his personal experiences and reactions to the events as emblematic of the experiences of the larger society protesting the Vietnam War. Mailer's Postmodern Armies: The Political 'Postmodernization' of American Nonfiction Songok Han Thornton It would be extremely difficult to say whether Norman Mailer's first allegiance, through out his career, has been to romance or to reality. Mailer seemed to sense from the time of his first novel, The Naked and the Dead, that the reality he wanted to express could not be communicated except through romance, and that romance would lose much of its meaning without its realistic content. It was this same conviction, uniting art and reality, that drove Mailer as a young writer into politics. More than a decade before Eisenhower would coin the term 'military-industrial complex,' Malier's The Naked and the Dead (hereafter N & D) warned of a permanently militarized America. In a 1948 interview, Malier said of N & D that. I never even thought of its being an anti-war book, at the beginning. But every time I turned on the radio and looked into the newspapers, there was this growing hysteria, this talk of going to war again, and it made me start looking for the trend of what was happening (Levitas 4). An important character in N & D, General Cummings, predicted that the massive orga nization of America would soon reach beyond institutions to the very personality structure of postwar Americans. Sociologists such as Riesman (The Lonely Growd), White (The Organization Man), and C. Wright Mills (White Collar) would later testify to the arrival of exactly the personality structure that Mailer, through the person of General Cummings, had predicted. The generals, in this case, were corporate executives and upwardly mobile professionals. -

Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate. -
