Nat. Croat., Vol. 30, No. 1, 37–52, 2021, Zagreb. From 2016 to 2020 numerous surveys were undertaken to improve the knowledge of the pyraloid moth fauna of Biokovo Nature Park. On August 27th, 2020 one specimen of Psorosa mediterranella (Amsel, 1954) from the family Pyralidae was collected on a small meadow (985 m a.s.l.) on Mt Biok- ovo. In this paper, the first data about the occurrence of this species in Croatia are presented. The previ- ous mention in the literature for Croatia was considered to be a misidentification of the past and has thus not been included in the checklist of Croatian pyraloid moth species. P. mediterranella was recorded for the first time in Croatia in recent investigations and, after other additions to the checklist have been counted, is the 396th species in the Croatian pyraloid moth fauna. An overview of the overall pyraloid moth fauna of Croatia is given in the updated species list. A total of 173 species is reported here, comprising 97 Crambidae and 76 Pyralidae. Based upon published data, 29 species appear to be new to the fauna of Serbia, 5 species are new to the fauna of Macedonia and 37 are new to the fauna of Albania. The data are discussed. A monthly newsletter covering Gwent and Monmouthshire Vice County 35 Editor: Martin Anthoney Small Ranunculus (Hecatera dysodea ) Update Up to 1900 this small, pretty moth used to be common in Britain, mainly in eastern and southern counties. It then suffered a catastrophic decline, and by 1912 it had disappeared from most of its range. The last record was 1941 and it was assumed to be extinct in Britain. The Small Ranunculus reappeared in Britain on 26th June 1997 in Kent. In 1998 it was recorded in areas around the Thames Estuary which was formerly one of its strongholds, and on 14th July 1999 Roger James caught one in his light trap at Newport, well away from its former range. The next six years produced eleven further adult specimens to light in Roger’s garden, and in 2003 Kevin Dupé and Roger confirmed breeding when eggs and larvae were found on prickly lettuce at the Blaina Wharf site alongside the River Usk. Since then, records have been made from many sites along the Usk corridor in Newport and out as far as St Mellons in the west and Goldcliff in the east. In August 2012, Kevin Dupé found larvae in the Crindau area of Newport and also close to the footbridge over the River Usk near Rodney Parade. On 28th August, Roger James and I were recording butterflies when we found 20 Small Ranunculus larvae adjacent to Caldicot Railway Station and the following day a further one at Chepstow (Newhouse Farm Industrial Estate), next to the first Severn bridge. -

These community-wide general flowering events are thought to facilitate seed survival through satiation of generalist seed preda- tors. During a general flowering event, closely related Shorea species (Dipterocarpaceae) stagger their flowering times by several weeks, which may minimize cross pollination and interspecific competition for pollinators. Generalist, pre-dispersal seed predators might also track flowering hosts and influence predator satiation. We addressed the question of whether pre-dispersal seed predation differed between early and late flowering Shorea species by monitoring flowering, fruiting and seed predation intensity over two general flowering events at the Pasoh Research Forest, Malaysia. Pre-dispersal insect seed predators killed up to 63 percent of developing seeds, with Nanophyes shoreae, a weevil that feeds on immature seeds being the most important predator for all Shorea species. -

Observations were made on 20 tree species in the moist deciduous forest (MDF) and 18 tree species in the evergreen forest (EGF). The study plots were situated at Peechi and Vazhani for MDF and Sholayar for EGF. No major damage was observed although most trees had some insect associates causing occasional damage. Leaf feeding was the most common damage and it was noticed on all tree species, to varying degrees. However, loss due to insect feeding never exceeded 10% of the total foliage present at any particular time except in 4 species each in the two forest types. These exceptions were Grewia tiliaefolia, Haldina cordifolia, Lannea coromandelica and Tectona grandis in the MDF and Anacolosa densiflora, Actinodaphne madraspatana, Cinnamomum verum and Litsea floribunda in the EGF; but even for these species the highest leaf loss was only 21%. Other types of damage, viz., sap-sucking, gall formation and stem boring were insignificant, except in Mesua nagassarium in the EGF, in which some trees were killed, apparently by a stem boring buprestid beetle. -

This study presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the Lepidoptera fauna of Bucharest and the surrounding areas within a distance up to 50 kilometers around the Romanian capital. Data about the fauna composition are presented: the results of the research work beginning with the end of the 19th century, as well the results of the research work carried out in the last 15 years. The research initiated and done by the author himself, led to the identification of 180 species which were unknown in the past. Even if the natural habitats from this region have undergone through radical changes in the 20th century, the area still preserves a quite rich and interesting Lepidoptera fauna. The forests provide shelter to rich populations of the hawk moth Dolbina elegans A. Bang-Haas, 1912, one of the rarest Sphingidae in Europe, and some other species with high faunistical and zoogeographical value as: Noctua haywardi (Tams, 1926) (it is new record for the Romanian fauna from this area), Catocala dilecta (Hübner, 1808), Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]), Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper, [1789]), Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hecatera cappa (Hübner, [1809]). We also present and discuss the current status of the protected Lepidoptera species from the surroundings of the Romanian capital for the first time. Résumé.
