Oct. 2021 LANICIDTIT IILIIRITYll 1 1 II 3 8001 00333 6165 THE NEW WOMAN AND THE NEW SCIENCE: FEMINIST WRITING 1880-1900 LYSSA RANDOLPH A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the University's requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy OCTOBER 2001 Coventry University in collaboration with University College Worcester i Abstract In this thesis I contend that evolutionary scientific discourses were integral to the work of "New Woman" writers of late Victorian literary culture in Britain. In the cultural debates that raged over the new gender politics and their relationship to social and moral values at the fin de siècle, the questions raised about femininity, modernity and the "woman question" were also central to the "new sciences" of sexology, eugenics, psychology and anthropology. This thesis investigates the issue of whether the new sciences offered an enabling set of discourses to New Women through which to produce new artistic, professional and personal feminine identities and to campaign for feminist goals. An understanding of the field of cultural production informs this discussion; I argue that science functions as cultural and symbolic capital in literary production of the period, and consider the dynamics between constructs of value, status, and the feminine in the literary market-place and their relationship to scientific narratives. This analysis is developed through the illumination of the relationship between New Woman novelists and poets, female aesthetes, and other forces in the field, in discussion of the thematic concerns and literary strategies of those participating in these debates: amongst others, Mona Caird, "Iota" (Katherine Mannington Caffyn), Victoria Cross(e) (Annie Sophie Cory), Sarah Grand (Frances Elizabeth McFall), Vernon Lee (Violet Paget), Alice Meynell, May Kendall, Constance Naden, and the anti-New Woman male writer, Grant Allen. An examination of a variety of literary forms and genres, in addition to the novel — the principal focus for much scholarship on the New Woman — such as the feminist periodicals, poetry, journalism and the ii short story, is central to the thesis and enables identification of shared literary strategies and techniques as well as consideration of readers and critical contexts. The roles and representation of "woman" in this period were produced within biological determinist concepts of sex and Nature. The study concentrates on ways in which essentialist dichotomies of cultural and biological reproduction redefined notions of literary and artistic "genius", motherhood and female citizenship, as they intersect with "race" and sexuality in imperial contexts. Women's critique and construct of these subjectivities differed; study of the women's journals reveals a consumer culture saturated in discourses of health and hygiene, negotiated by a divided community of readers. Focus on theories and representation of the child in late Victorian culture finds that Alice Meynell's writing challenged evolutionary psychology, and relates Sarah Grand's child genius to emergent Galtonian eugenics. I argue that late nineteenth-century feminism was intimately involved in imperialism and eugenics, and suggest that current feminist scholarship must confront and analyse these investments. In this thesis I find that boundaries between the groups' identities are fluid; points of intercourse and affiliation are revealed, such as the ways in which scientific constructs of "race", as in Mona Caird's use of the Celtic, are deployed in order to comment on literary value. I have highlighted the ambivalences at work in these appropriations, and suggest that the New Woman text was not always polemical, nor did it reject "high art" values, and that the female aesthetes also express feminist convictions.     University Museums and Special Collections Service Charles Elkin Mathews Collection MS 392 The bulk of the collection consists of around 500 letters. Most were written to Mathews and concern some aspect of his work. Some were collected by Mathews and relate to literary and antiquarian matters 1811-c.1870. There are 48 letters from John Lane. Other major correspondents include Ernest Radford, Jack Butler Yeats and Richard Le Gallienne. There are also letters from William Butler Yeats, John Trivett Nettleship, Robert Bridges, Charles Henry Daniel, Roden Noel, William Watson and John Davidson, along with three letters from Ezra Pound and one from James Joyce. There is a variety of personal material, including draft reminiscences of Mathews' life and career. The rest of the collection relates to works published and consists of proofs, cuttings, publicity material, photographs of authors, prints of illustrative material including several by Jack Butler Yeats, and associated printed material. The collection of Elkin Mathews' papers is supported by around 400 books which were published under the Elkin Mathews imprint. The Collection covers the year’s c.1800 - 1938. The physical extent of the collection is 3 boxes containing c.650 items. Introduction Charles Elkin Mathews was born in Gravesend in 1851. As a young man, he served his apprenticeship in the book trade working for Charles John Stewart in London, managing Peach's library in Bath, and then returning to London to work for the firm of Messrs Sotheran in Piccadilly. In 1884 he opened an antiquarian and general bookshop at 16 Cathedral Close, Exeter, where he also began his publishing career, joining with other local booksellers in his first venture.

    NINETEENTH-CENTURY GENDER STUDIES ISSUE 3.2 (SUMMER 2007) The New Woman’s Work: Past, Present, and Future <1> A full generation after New Woman fiction was re-introduced to academic readers (by Elaine Showalter’s A Literature of Their Own, Lloyd Fernando’s “New Women” in the Late Victorian Novel in 1977 and Gail Cunningham’s The New Woman and The Victorian Novel in 1978) and a decade beyond outpourings of gender-inflected essays, dissertations and books aroused as the most recent fin de siècle approached, the impact of this scholarship — and of the women, the writers and the texts it studies — is far from exhausted. Although undergraduates may continue to insist that Victorian women were silent, subservient and confined to their homes, the papers from the New Woman Roundtable at the 2007 British Women Writers Conference not only reflect the conference theme, “Speaking With Authority” but also focus on the importance of work. Together, our three papers illuminate the literal work in the public sphere done by middle-class women in the 1880s and 1890s; the cultural work performed by the stereotyped “New Woman” and by the backlash against her; the twentieth-century scholarship on her that reshaped the study of modernity and examined evolving questions about gender, nationality, race, class and empire. In the early twenty-first century this work again feels urgent. Its implications fuel the search for new frames of analysis and raise complex and suggestive debates about new ways that we, collectively, might think about our own work as woman scholars and about the place of humanities in an increasingly vocational and technological system of higher education.

    GEORGE EGERTON [Mary Chavelita Dunne Bright] (1859-1945) Mary Chavelita Dunne Bright, who took on the pen name George Egerton, was born in Australia in 1859. During her childhood she lived in New Zealand, Chile, Wales, Ireland, and Germany. After the death of her mother in 1875, she helped raise her younger siblings, living in Dublin, London, and New York. She moved to Norway with one of her father's friends, Henry Higginson, but returned to England and married Egerton Tertius Clairmonte, whose first name she adopted as part of her E.A. Walton. Bodley Heads No. 3: pseudonym. She took on "George" as a George Egerton. Drawing, 1895 The Yellow Book 5 (April 1895): 9. tribute to her mother, whose maiden name was "Isabel George" (Stetz, "Keynotes" 91). After divorcing Clairmonte, she married Reginald Golding Bright, a drama critic and theatre agent, in 1901. Egerton burst onto the London literary scene in 1893 with her first book, Keynotes, published by Elkin Mathews and John Lane at the Bodley Head in a 1 distinctive design by Aubrey Beardsley. In fact, because the short story collection's themes of sexual freedom, creativity, and independence were so emblematic of the 1890s New Woman, "Keynotes" also became the title of a book series Lane created later, once he was running the Bodley Head on his own. The series included 19 volumes of short stories and 14 novels – among them Grant Allen's The Woman Who Did (1895), Ella D'Arcy's Monochromes (1895), and Victoria Crosse's The Woman Who Didn't (1895).

Beatrice Harraden’s 1893 bestseller Ships That Pass in the Night also offers a complex, bitter critique of the way in which sentimentality obscures the abuse and neglect of disabled people by nondisabled carers; it undermines the Romanticisation of consumptives, and shows consumptives driven to suicide by social marginalisation that leaves them feeling useless and hopeless. Yet its depiction of a romantic friendship between an emancipated woman and a disabled man also engages with the exciting possibilities of 1890s’ gender politics, and imagines new comradeship between disabled and nondisabled people based on mutual care and respect. Ships That Pass in the Night is a love story set in an Alpine ‘Kurhaus’ for invalids. Once enormously popular, adapted for the stage in remote corners of America and translated into several languages, including Braille, Ships was ‘said to be the only book found in the room of Cecil Rhodes when he died.’1 The novel is rarely read now, and so requires a brief synopsis.

    SECTION XIII LIFE: JULY-DECEMBER 1895 For the first three weeks of July, Sharp stayed busy in London, writing and negotiating with Herbert Stone about American editions of The Gypsy Christ and Other Tales (by W.S.) and Pharais and The Sin-Eater (F.M.) which appeared in the fall. The second Fiona Macleod book, The Mountain Lovers, was published in London on July 9th by John Lane. On the 5th, the Sharps spent a night with the Grant Allens in Surrey, and on the 13th he went down to Burford Bridge for a dinner meeting of the Omar Khayyam Club, an organization of literary figures dedicated to the pleasures of good wine and food. Many important writers attended (Memoir, 246), chief among them George Meredith who was the guest of honor. He was lured to the dinner by his friend Edward Clodd, the club’s president, and arrived only for the dessert course. Clodd welcomed him “in a charming and eloquent speech not devoid of pathos,” and Meredith, overcoming his famed reticence about speaking in public, responded graciously and wittily. In the fall of 1895, Clodd recommended Sharp for membership in the Omar Khayyam Club, and he was pleased to accept. The Sharps planned to spend August in Edinburgh to participate in Patrick Geddes’ Summer School and then go on to the Kyles of Bute in the West for September. On the 13th of July, Sharp told Murray Gilchrist he would like to pay him a visit on his way to Scotland in about ten days. When Geddes learned Sharp was coming north in advance of his wife, he proposed a day or two hiking trip.

    Tina O’Toole Unregenerate Spirits: The Counter-Cultural Experiments of George Egerton and Elizabeth Bowen Monique Wittig, addressing ideological activism and social change at the end of the twentieth century, proposes the Trojan Horse as a model for counter-cultural movements and avant-garde writers: ‘at the time it is produced, any work with a new form operates as a war machine, because its design and its goal is to pulverise the old forms and formal conventions. It is always produced in hostile territory’ (‘The Trojan Horse’, 1992b: 75). The experimental work of Irish writers George Egerton (1860–1945) and Elizabeth Bowen (1899–1973) presents a similar ideological challenge to the gender and sexual binaries of the late nineteenth and twentieth cen- turies. Bowen’s life and work is relatively well-known within the canon of both British and Irish literary scholarship but Egerton, on the other hand, is much less well-known and has only recently begun to emerge within the canon of contemporary literary criticism (e.g. Ardis 1990; Showalter 1992; Pykett 1995; Ledger 1997). Focusing on her early fiction, I will consider the ways in which Egerton deployed protagonists who are clearly marked out as exiles, outsiders to the hegemonic order, partly as a means to destabilise that order. I will then move on to the work of Elizabeth Bowen and will contend that in her work, particularly in her 1968 novel, Eva Trout, Bowen extends the blueprint forged by writers such as Egerton. I will argue that Bowen further develops the interrogation of gender and sexual identities developed by the ‘New Woman’ writers and that in her last novel in particu- lar, there is evidence of a gendered social world in a constant state of f lux, rather than some kind of static account of immutable patriarchal oppres- sion.

August 2015 1 THESIS ABSTRACT The majority of Sarah Grand’s short stories have been out of print since their first publication in book form. As Grand is today considered to be a significant feminist writer of the 1890s and early 1900s, it therefore seems timely to make readily available a large body of her work which has previously proved difficult to access. The thesis is, therefore, submitted in two parts. Part 1 contains critical and contextual work on Grand and her stories, and Part 2 comprises a collected, annotated edition of the twenty-six stories published as Our Manifold Nature (1894), Emotional Moments (1908) and Variety (1922). In working towards presenting a critical edition of the short fiction of Sarah Grand, I have set out to show how reading these stories can contribute to an increased understanding of both the author, her most widely read novels, and her role in contributing to the debates about women and marriage in the 1890s and beyond. In Part 1, the Introduction sets out the aims of the thesis, the research undertaken, provides biographical information about Grand and her times, and offers an overview of the stories and their publication history. Chapter One demonstrates the significant shifts in critical evaluation of Grand’s writing from 1894 to the present day.

    ALLEN LANE AND THE HIS FOUNDATION In 1989 the trustees of the Allen Lane Foundation decided to set up an annual lecture in memory of my father. Our original idea was to celebrate his life and the work of his foundation. This year is the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Foundation. In fact the trust deed was signed on March 14th 1966 – just two weeks from today! When I was asked to give this annual lecture in memory of my father I felt both pleased and honoured to be asked. But when I looked at the list of eminent past speakers I felt daunted. As I began to read the biographies and the early minutes of the Foundation, I found it more and more difficult to find a way to join the man, who was also my father, and the Foundation he founded, in a seamless way. He was not a natural philanthropist in the accepted sense of the word, he just turned out that way. So I decided to tell it like a story, which I hope you will enjoy. Allen Lane Williams Lane was born on September 21st 1902, in Bristol, the eldest son of a Welsh town planner. His mother was a Devonian woman of farming stock who was the lynch pin of the family – much loved by Allen who wrote to her frequently even in later life. It was a happy, close-knit family. He spent many holidays with his farming cousins in Devon and developed a great love of the countryside. His school days impressed him less and he left school at 14 with no academic qualifications whatsoever.

    Elkin Mathews,1 Poets' Publisher PATRICIA HUTCHINS HE NAME Elkin Mathews represents a link between two families living in Gravesend, in the county of Kent. It is Tprobable that the Mathews came originally from Wales, and there was a connection with Edwin Arnold of The Light of A.sia. Elkins are mentioned in London records of the sixteenth century, and they became shipbuilders, with a trade in the Far East; then as time changed they also dealt in coal. There had been a Lord Mayor and Town Clerk of Gravesend among them.2 Thomas George Mathews (b. 1812), who married Francis Elkin, was to become a family problem. A silhouette shows him as a young gentleman in frock coat holding gloves and a top hat, but of course does not reveal his full face, probably that of a man who was never able to cope with life. According to family tradition, he declared he 'could not bear the smell of tar' and left Gravesend with its shipyards and quays, to live at The Poplars, Codford St Mary, in Wiltshire. His son, Charles Elkin Mathews, maintained that his father was 'essentially a bookman' and he was reputed to have been solitary, rather irascible. Mrs Mathews, who was not very practical, read much Shakespeare, and later became interested in mysticism. Her family in Gravesend helped to educate the nine children. A letter from one of the boys, who died young of tuberculosis, suggests that there was a good deal of affection between them, and even gaiety at times.3 Thus if they were never at poverty level, none of them had a very well-to-do childhood and youth.
